I took the day off yesterday and did one long walk (as I typically do on weekends). I walked a 10K - 6.2 miles - in freezing temperatures and a stiff breeze. No ice, so the surface was good for walking. In these conditions I find that I naturally pick up the pace. I was toasty warm after the first mile and I finished the walk with an average speed of 3.6 MPH.

... so even though the heart rate information puts my walk at a lesser degree of intensity than usual, heart rate clearly isn't the only measure of effort.

I think being sure-footed does make a difference. I was walking around on slick, slushy stuff a few days ago and just the added stress of it might impact HR. I find that I walk differently, too... head down, shorter steps.
