Default NIH Study Links Glucose Metabolism with Alzheimer's Disease

A study supported by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health, has found a connection between abnormalities in how the brain breaks down glucose and the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers believe it's the first time that any link has been established between glucose levels and the severity of the signature amyloid plaques and tangles in the brain that are associated with Alzheimer's disease. The study appears in this week's issue of Alzheimer's & Dementia: the Journal of the Alzheimer's Association.
