Dig, the general rule of thumb as explained to me by one of my doctors was this: If the symptoms are above your neck you should be OK, just don't overdo it. If symptoms are in your chest or below take it easy and rest up, avoid exercise, especially if you're having a hard time breathing. This came with the following caveat: Don't start to exercise if you're sick and you haven't been active before that.

If you feel confident, let your body tell you what it needs. And go out and get some zinc lozenges ASAP. They can cut the duration of a common cold from 7-10 days to 3.
