How me, my wife and my mom lost 200lbs in 4 months...

Hello Everyone, I thought some people might get inspiration from my story...

Back on Feb 4th of this year, my wife and I started a diet based on Dr. George Blackburn's Protein Sparring Modified Fast. In a nutshell it's low calorie diet that is low in carbs and fat while maintaining a reasonable amount of protein based on many small meals (I can post my daily meal plan if anyone cares to see it). About 4 months later, I lost 78lbs... my wife lost about the same (with another 30 to go... according to her!) and my mom who is 55 years old joined us and lost about 50lbs. Together we lost about 200lbs! Here are a couple photos of us... And yes, the photos are real! DUH :doah:

PS. We worked with a local DR. here in Montreal on a weekly basis... any drastic change in diet should be monitored by a DR. :exclm:

WOW! Great pics!

Yeah, post the diet regimen, I'm sure people would love to see it. I assume you're on a great workout plan too. WOoo! :)

Tell your wife she's beautiful! Her weight loss really brings out those gorgeous eyes. Keep it up, you guys are sure a hot couple. ;)

Thanks Skamito! Yes... I do spend some time in the gym :) My wife has been joining me since she started dieting and does 1HR on the bike from 5AM to 6AM... not an easy task on 650 calories!!!

This is what I did for months 1&2... my wife has been on the same type of diet for the past 5 months ~ about 650 calories instead of 750 calories like I did... breakdown of pro/carb/fat was the same.

This is what I did for month 3... my mom's plan is very much like this...

This is what I did in the last month to shed my final 20 some odd pounds...

WOW! WOW! WOW! WOW! WOW! WOW! I'm just going to keep saying it over & over . . . . .

You guys have done a GREAT job! I bet it feels wonderful! It's nice you all did this together, makes things a lot easier in the support department. Looking at your menu, to be it seems to be similar to the Body For Life eating plan (looks like you've been doing a lot of lifting too!). Is that what your plan was based off of or did your Doc put this together for you?

The diet I put together was based on Dr. George Blackburn's protein sparring modified fast... I did not like taking all the protein supplements these low calorie diets are made up from, so I figured out a way to get the nutrient breakdown from real food. My mom followed my program cause she hated the supplements, my wife on the other hand finds the supplements to be convinient so about half her diet is made up from Dr. perscribed supplements. I have recently read about the 'body for life' program and believe in some of it's components while there are other parts of it I don't really like. In the end I guess you could say I tried to take various components from the many types of diets that are out there and combine them into a diet that I felt worked for me... Here's some info about Dr. Blackburn's diet... this guy really know's his stuff... but he never really tried to market his research :(

George L. Blackburn, M.D., Ph.D., is an internationally renowned expert in the fields of obesity and clinical nutrition.
-medical degree from Kansas Medical School
-doctorate in nutritional biochemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
-currently holds the following appointments and positions at Harvard Medical School:
1)S. Daniel Abraham Chair of Nutrition Medicine
2)Associate Professor of Surgery
3)Associate Director of Nutrition, Division of Nutrition
4)Director of Nutrition Support Services
5)Chief of the Nutritional/Metabolism Laboratory
6)Director of the Center for the Study of Nutrition and Medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
-President of the North American Association for the Study of Obesity
-immediate Past President of the American Society for Clinical Nutrition.
-Fellow in the American College of Surgery
-Chairs the Massachusetts Medical Society Committee on Nutrition, and the Scientific Advisory Committee for Shape Up America! (Koop Foundation).

The protein-sparing modified fast (PSMF) diet was developed in the 1970s by George Blackburn. Blackburn, found that patients required 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of ideal body weight in order to maintain a positive protein balance, rather than the 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram that was recommended by the US Department of Agriculture . Although some high-level athletes can consume on the order of 500 grams of protein per day during high-intensity competition, it is difficult for some people to consume adequate lean protein without consuming excess calories, or to eat lean meats or fish at each meal. One solution is the development of a formula that provides a complete, nutritionally balanced diet. A formula-only plan can ensure that the patient obtains all necessary protein, vitamins, and minerals, while losing weight on a plan that can provide as little as 800 calories per day. Protocols may be supplemented with coordinated nutritional bars and/or some self-prepared foods. A physician or other knowledgeable health care professional should supervise use of nutritional formulas.

THE KETOGENTC OPTION: The Protein Fast through the induction of triglyceride catabolism, encourages the oxidation of free fatty acids at the hepatic level and provokes the famous physiological phenomenon of compensated acidoketosis that BLACKBURN called KETOGENESIS. The constant and controlled presence of ketone bodies in the body shows the perfect adaptation of the human system when subjected to a fast supplied with a precise amount of amino-acids.

As long as the human body has an excess of fat that should be eliminated through ketogenesis and mainly through the Protein Fast, the effects of ketogenesis persist during this diet and supply the body with most of the energy it needs.

All these metabolic reactions that take place during the Protein Fast and that Blackburn carefully described in his many books and articles, are absolutely safe.

As a matter of fact, this method is based on strict scientific data and its application should be made according to a precise protocol.

The Protein Fast has specific advantages that no other diet offers whether it is the low-calories or the dissociated diet.

I don't really at this board, much :)

Yes, eat that every day... you can have beef once a day (no more than 100g's) or substitute a white fish... my wife went to lose half her body weight... I went on to gain 30lbs of muscle :)

Make sure to check with your doctor 1st and take a multivitamin as well as calcium and potassium...

You're wife is one hot chick! ;)

sandooch Thu, Aug-11-05 11:11

I am speechless!!! Those are absolutely the most amazing transformations I have seen in a long time. You can see even in your before photos that you trained with weights, but the cuts you have now are awesome. And your wife is simply stunning; she could be a model! May I ask if she had any problems with her abdominal skin getting loose from losing so quickly? I'm sure she worked out as well. Would she mind posting her workout schedule for us?

How is your mom doing with the plan?

Thank you so much for showing us these pictures and the updated ones. They are so motivational! Congratulations to all of you.

vmax1500 Thu, Aug-11-05 11:14

My wife's skin is not great... she plans on getting surgery... my mom put some weight back on and is working on taking off again... Nat's work outs really vary alot... she has experimented with everything from pure cardio to a power lifting style routine... when it comes to actual weight loss, cardio is hard to beat! 2 X 1 hour sessions in the morning and at night!
