Metformin for PCOS

if you're taking metformin for PCOS do you continue when you're on Atkins? I am not diabetic.

thanks!

PS I know some of you will say ask your doctor but my doctor asked me  !

Metformin won't give you blood sugar lows, so you should probably stay on it for PCOS.

I'm diabetic and don't need to take it when on induction, as eliminating starchy and sweet carbs keeps my sugar just right.

I felt like my blood sugar was crashing a bit so I've almost stopped taking it.

Do you monitor your blood? I'd buy a monitor if you don't already have one. That's the only sure way to know.

I don't monitor it but guess I should. Any tips on a good, reasonable one to get?

I think I felt the best ever when I was doing low carb and taking the metformin. My dr took me off it when I got pregnant years ago and I have never gotten back on it.. I've been thinking about asking to go back on it. I was only on 500 mg in the beginning

I'm not diabetic, but I do suffer from Insulin Resistance which is a pre-cursor for diabetes. I also have PCOS and take 1000mg of Metformin per day. Metformin alone does nothing for me (so it seems), but when coupled with a low carb lifestyle my hormones regulate on a more "normal" basis and I am able to get AF on my own in a timely manner without medicinal intervention.

I feel great doing low carb and taking the Metformin. I'm hoping that this will increase my fertility.

I see this is an old topic. I'd love to hear from other members. I have PCOS, and was on metformin for years. I know that the one time I did low-carb in the past, it instantly solved the having-no-periods problem. That was amazing. But then I went on metformin and forgot low-carb. Now I'm on low-carb and am no longer taking metformin. I no longer have a uterus, so it's hard to tell what the effects on PCOS are at this stage. Is anyone else dropping metformin because being low-carb ?

Weirdly, no one has actually ever measured "insulin resistance" in me, the PCOS is probably genetic and certainly uncurable, but certainly low-carb is a must for me.

I have stayed on 1000 MG metformin for 5 years .It helped me get preggo when combined with low carb /exercise .I got preggo after a year on it .I stayed on it because I know it helps .Anyone with insulin resistance should try metformin. I also would sometimes get my period without using any progesterone but I've needed it since having my daughter .Anyone trying to get preggo should stay on this as well .

It's great to hear experience with it, hope4eva, thanks for posting.

Stay on Metformin. I went from 2000 to 1000 mg with a low carb lifestyle. They work best together for PCOS but do bloodwork every 3 months to make sure your triglycerides and a1c are not too high or low.

Ive previously done Atkins whilst taking metformin for PCOS with no issues, as I lost weight i also dropped the dose. This time around I'm no longer on the metformin and I can tell instantly its a much slower process. Every one is going to be different, but I'd caution you against hopping on and off metformin as it can lose its efficacy.

I definitely suggest staying on the metformin. My doctor started me on it well aware that I was going to be doing Atkins, and told me that apart from its other good effects it should help me to lose more consistently. I think he was definitely correct-- I've seen much better loss on it than not. besides which, I find that I really do feel better when taking it.
