Jamie Oliver prepares huge TV study in healthy diet drive

JAMIE Oliver plans a documentary series tracking 10 families and their unborn children from the womb to their first day of secondary school. The TV chef, 43, will study nutrition, hoping for “a really legitimate cross-section of Britain today” and to “bring them back every year, kids and family”.

In an interview with Radio Times he says the aim is to copy the Up series, which traced 14 children since 1964 from when they were seven, revisiting every seven years.

Oliver said: “It’s like 7 Up and it requires real commitment from them and real care from us. Basically, I want to do a Blue Planet of people instead of ants.”

His bid to tackle childhood obesity began with his campaign to improve school dinners in 2005 and he hopes to halve the number of overweight children by 2030.

“Nothing is allowed to function in my business unless it contributes to that strategy,” he said. “It can come in different shapes and form, whether it’s storytelling, documentaries, campaigning or just cooking shows – getting people to cook – or it could be a product that’s healthier.”

Jamie's TED Talk on children and sugar indicated to me that he gets it. He is part of what I call the "second wave" or those whose message starts to reach a broader audience. Grass roots is the first wave, the second wave results in more awareness and adoption of beliefs, and the final wave is mass adoption when the media finally catches up and the remaining "experts" then concur that they've known this all along. All good and part of the necessary process of knowledge adoption.
