Shameful

I must confess that I still prefer the handicap stall in a public bathroom. After 30 years of enjoying the wide open spaces I just can't adjust to using the normal bathroom stall. I feel confined - like I'm in a small horse trailer. I will continue to use the big stall. So sue me.

P.S. This is meant to be funny - but I'm half serious, too. It seems like I've always used the big stall. But these days I feel a little guilty for doing so. Will the bathroom police slap me with a $250 fine one day? There is no law against it yet (I hope).

Me too - especially in one store where it's a handicap ROOM! Total privacy. :D

But it is nice to be able to use the regular stalls now & not have to wait for the handicap stall.

Not to be a goody two shoes here but it's good to remember that the people who the handicapped stalls were designed for don't have the same kind of choice (feel free to throw tomatoes at me if you wish).

Yes, I think that's why this is the confession booth....

Very small town here - rarely are there lines for the bathrooms. If a handicapped person is heading for the restroom at the same time I am, of course I don't use the handicap stall. At WalMart I am very happy to use the regular stalls. The handicap stall has the paper in a weird spot so it's hard to reach. I don't know how some handicapped people reach it at all.

I do what Bonnie does. Do a quick scan of the room, and if there's only the handicap stall, and no one who is noticeably handicapped in some fashion, I take it.

It's my stall of preference at airports, though, because the regular ones make it nigh on to impossible to close the door once you've wheeled in your carry on.

A larger stall is ideal when you have a couple little kids with you. Wish they were all larger for that reason. Sometimes the diaper changing area is in the larger handicapped stall too.

If there is a restroom with two stalls, one handicapped and one not, and there is a line, do I let the handicapped person ten people out in the line go next if it is my turn and I really need to pee? No. You still take turns. It's not a handicapped only stall, it's a handicapped able stall. I don't understand guilt about using these stalls unless you are denying someone that needs it access.

Ccat, one of the issues that many people who are wheelchair bound deal with is poor bladder control. You and I can wait till the last minute, and be OK. Many people, especially with spinal cord injuries or spina bifida, cannot.

I'd rather wave the person in a wheelchair to the front of the line, and practice my pubo-coccygeal muscle exercises for another 30 seconds.

Really great discussion about the handicapped stalls...

When I was wheelchair bound last year (stupid accident), it made me more aware of how truly un-wheelchair friendly some places are EVEN when they are at "code". I was alone and had to be able to wheel myself around once I got out of my truck... anyhoo... back on topic! :D

As for do I or do I not use the handicapped accessible stall ~ you betcha I do if that's the only one available & if no one in a wheelchair is in line!

I never feel guilty for using the handicapped stall, but also would always let a handicapped person use it before me. I would never think they would have to wait behind me to use it.
