Carbs not the same although the product is the same

Sorry for the confusing title. What I meant was when I take a look at chia seeds, for example, on google it says it's 42g of carbs (100g), some pages say 6g per 100g. I bought some chia seeds online (they have good reviews so they are legit) and they are 2 carbs per 100g?

I mean how could there be such difference?

I have noticed the same with other products. I have Tahini that I purchased from a store and on google it says 21g carbs per 100g but mine says 1.9?

It's really frustrating when I'm trying to count carbs. I guess I should just check the packaging but then it feels weird that there is so much less than it is on average.

Hello and welcome.

Are you subtracting fiber counts or no?

My first thought is, are you sure the units are the same? I just looked the tahini up on Fitday. The 21 g per 100 g sounds about right, and the 1.9 looks like a 1 Tbsp serving.

For the chia seeds, the fiber information was missing. I googled around and did the math backwards from the calorie counts, and it looks like the correct info for 100 g chia seeds is 472 calories, 26 g fat, 48 g total carb, 34 g fiber, 17 g protein. I didn't double-check it, though, so maybe someone else can correct me if I'm wrong.

I get frustrated with Google. There so much much information that a lot of it is bound to be contradictory. I would always go with what the package says. You can always google a specifc brand or product rather than a generic search.

From the packages:

Bob's Red Mill Organic Chia Seeds
2tbls (26g)
130 cal, 7g fat, 10g carb, 10g dietary fiber, 6g protein (zero net carbs)

Sanar Naturals Organic Superfood Chia Seed
1tbls (14g)
66 cal, 4g fat, 5,5g carb, 4.8g dietary fiber, 4g protein ( .7 net carbs or 5 per 100g)

Nutiva Organic Chia Seed
1 tbls (12g)
60 cal, 3g fat, 5g carb, 5g dietary fiber, 3g protein (zero net carbs)

are you looking at US or European labels?

On U.S. labels, carb counts are total carbs and then must subtract fibre to get net carbs. On UK/Europe labels, fibre is already subtracted.

Hi :)
No, I just count the ones on the package.
Yes, the units are the same. I just checked again.
Huh, it's really strange.

Yes! I guess I'll just check the package then...

Yes, these UK labels count the fiber separately, so just count the "carbohydrates" on the label.

Thought that the problem. Two biggest differences with label laws is the UK removes the fiber from Carb Number, and the servings are in 100g (which makes perfect sense but the US picks odd portions like a slice, or the whole container of something) in the US, some manufacturers of imported foods re-label to conform with US law, others seems to skate by with original label. Be aware of label differences especially with on-line orders.
