Trying to choose
 
I want to lose weight but am so muddled by all the diets. Been floating around this forum for a few days reading and thinking (OW :D ).
I can do low carb-ish but one thing is stopping me going totally low - and that's my porridge. I'm Scots and we like porridge :D If I could hang onto my breakfast oatmeal, made the proper way, with water, salt, and cream on top - then I could stay low the rest of the day.
Would that be workable do you think? How many carbs are in a small plate of oatmeal with cream?

If you are serious about this (?), it's probably doable so long as you keep other carbs really to a minimum (just green veg, basically). I can't actually answer your question - I'm sure someone will - but if oats don't leave you with cravings and if you don't put sugar in it, it should be OK. There's (arguably) no gluten in oats so from that point of view it's OKish too.

There is gluten in oats unless they are certified gluten free. Oats are heavily contaminated with wheat gluten.

Even if they're certified gluten free, they have their own protein, avenin, which is very bad for many or all people.

Truly, if I have to have a food, how is that different from having to have a drink, a line of coke, a cigarette, an injection of heroine, or the other things people get addicted to?

Okay, okay... I confess I'm addicted to coffee, but I'm working on it! :lol:

As long as it's not a huge ginormous dump of carbs that will blow my diet out of the water, I don't care what's in porridge lol!

In the grand scheme of things, you don't have that much to lose. Insulin resistance is a progressive disease, you may have it, you may not. While many are affected negatively by gluten, not everyone is.

I started eating LC with South Beach, rather than Atkins, and after induction, I ate a high fiber cereal for breakfast every day for 5 years till finally I began to crater (low blood sugar) in the late morning. At that point, I switched to bacon and eggs for breakfast, which seems like a better fit for me, now.

My advice is to try it. How much can you eat before it becomes a "ginormous dump of carbs"? How does it make you feel? Do you have the typical LC suppression of appetite? If you are still feeling hungry or anxious while eating this way, you may want to try a couple of weeks without your oats (in the name of science) and see how you feel. Once you get over the initial withdrawal from grains, you may find yourself feeling better without.

The bottom line is: this is YOUR health, YOUR way of eating, not anyone else's. It is up to you to find a way to make it a way of life, not just a temporary fix. There are many many versions of low carb - try some different kinds and figure out what is best for YOU. Good luck!

I confess to being a bit of an oats junkie - I love oatcakes. It must be the genes (Scottish grandmother on my mother's side). I have given them up though, for the moment. The sad thing is, the more something beckons to me, the more it's probably bad news. I have stronger addictions than oats, one being black chocolate. I haven't given that up but I do manage to stick to one or two squares at a time. Something tells me I ought to junk it though, because it's getting harder to limit myself. :-)

Well the only other thing I can stomach first thing apart from porridge is oatcakes :) so either way it's oats.
