Keto for Cancer - Miriam Kalamian, EdM, MS, CNS

Miriam Kalamian's new 355 page! book is now published and her website has been much updated and beautifully redesigned. If you are interested in the potential for diet to impact cancer risk, considering diet as an adjuvant therapy she has added more general information, resources and expanded the food list to explain why a type of keto food may not be best in a certain situation. I have shared her food list and information from her website many times over the years, and now it is available in a beautiful format and a print book.

Gary Taubes tweeted "We need better research on carbs, Keto and cancer. Until then we have Dietary Therapies new book as a guide."

Dr. Georgia Edes posted the first review:
"If you or your loved ones are facing cancer, please read and share Miriam Kalamian's phenomenal new book. I have read it cover-to-cover and recommend it highly, without reservation. Keto for Cancer is an incredibly generous gift to the cancer community. Absolutely everything you need to know about how cancer cells operate and how you can fight their growth by improving your own nutrition and metabolism is in this wonderful book. Every question you can possibly think of about cancer nutrition is answered thoughtfully and in a way that everyone can understand. This work is dedicated to the memory of her beloved son Raffi, whose own life was extended by years using this scientifically sound approach. Raffi's mother is now a highly-respected cancer nutrition expert who has poured every ounce of her hard-earned wisdom, deep scientific knowledge, and compassion into Keto for Cancer to help you and your loved ones become healthier, feel better, and live longer. I cannot think of a more comprehensive and trustworthy resource to guide you in your journey."

I just ordered the book. Tomorrow is my son's birthday and I almost decided to send it to him as a birthday present but he may not appreciate it, see it as interference, so I figured I would get it for myself and then decide if I should introduce him to it. Always just wanting the best for my granddaughter. She has 6 more months of chemo to go or at least that's the plan.

EDIT: Received my pre-ordered copy from Amazon day before publication date. I've been able to skim the insert info boxes, outline, resources and start reading. The book is a very deep dive into the details of diet in the special case of using a Ketogenic diet with cancer treatment, subjects like using antioxidants while receiving chemo, certain vitamins and minerals, copper and iron, with her well-researched views on the usual diet advice by cancer nutritionists.

If not up for this detailed, long book, the Food List on her website now offers a bit more explanation than before and looks beautiful. It is a great start for healthy LC eating and general cancer prevention. But anyone considering diet with active treatment should consult a cancer specialist like Miriam. Skype and phone consultations are available with her and other specialists around the world on her Resource list.

There is so much information in this book, it would be hard to do it justice. However to save me listing some topics, Amazon offers the "Look Inside" feature for this book. That includes the Table of Contents and the Resource List from the Appendix. You can see by reading those the focus and extent of the book.

My book should arrive tomorrow. Wish I could get my son to have a consult about my granddaughter but I doubt that it will happen.

I received my book and just kept thinking that my son and family really needed to have a copy. Today on my morning walk I stopped at my son's house when I noticed that his wife (Alice's stepmother and very involved in her care) was home and I told her about the book and asked her if it would be alright if I sent her a copy. I just didn't want anyone to think I was interfering or disapproved of the treatment decisions they were making. She said of course so I just ordered a copy for them from Amazon. While I was there Lana (stepmother) was making a pumpkin pie because Alice, who has very little appetite, had requested pumpkin pie. It's hard to cook for someone for whom most foods are unappealing but maybe this book will provide them with some useful tools and inspiration. Lana says that the doctors say that diet has nothing to do with this kind of cancer, maybe so and maybe not. I said "but it won't hurt" and she agreed. At least I have jumped the first hurdle and they will have in their possession a copy of the book. It's not that I think this is the ultimate answer to Alice's cancer but I want to give her every possible opportunity to be cured.

That is good news indeed, Jean. A reader can come away with the basics of an anti-cancer keto diet (Most appreciated that she addressed why Keto has advantages over Gerson, Vegetarian and the other often heard cancer diet protocols) But this book is also very detailed...I hope not too much for a reader totally new to the concept. For many recommendations, she will write do this or that except if you have that type of cancer or are getting this type of chemo. They illustrate how complex it might become and why having personalized plans important but I hope the book is not too overwhelming.

Note on that "Look Inside" Resource list. All there except page 340 which has the list of all cancer nutritionists like Miriam and a Keto Diet Clinic that may help cancer survivors with a dysregulated metabolism (Dr Westman at HealClinics).

Jean, you will appreciate that she does get into the micronutrients that may provide benefit as well. There is a new conference on Keto diets for Cancer that features the researchers who work in this area, and the lunches will be made by "macrobiotic" chefs.

What a wonderful new resource! I am impressed by how quickly so many new sources are appearing. It gives everyone hope.

From the book:

Quote:
Macros matter.
Food quality matters.
Meal timing matters.
Fasting matters.
Micronutrients and minerals matter.
Hydration matters.

This applies to all of us both those with cancer and those without.

After the GMA segment on Keto mentioning cancer three times, http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?t=478370. today CNN adds to the swirling popular media stories on sugar, obesity, and cancer links. http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/27/healt...tudy/index.html.

Our library is ordering Kalamian’s new book so people looking for resources will find it there.

And as I'm reading "Why We Sleep" by Matthew Walker, I would add

Sleep matters

I'll do a review in another thread once I finish the book, but the importance of sleep has to be added as one of the pillars of a healthy WOL. Here's a review of the book from The Guardian:
https://www.theguardian.com/books/2...w-walker-review

From the first paragraph lead:
Quote:
Awake at 4.30am the other morning, having been roused from sleep by my four-year-old son climbing into bed with my wife and me (a more or less nightly occurrence), I found myself sitting up and reading about the effects of insufficient sleep. It has been making me stupider, fatter, unhappier, poorer, sicker, worse at sex, as well as more likely to get cancer, Alzheimer’s and to die in a car crash.

WereBear Fri, Oct-27-17 12:04

Getting my sleep on track, and getting enough of it, was pivotal in me getting better from my health challenges.

Terrific talk by Miriam at LowCarbUSA in August 2017.
Focus on managing high blood glucose, using the diet when in cancer treatment, circadian rhythms, stressors like lack of sleep, and an emotional call to be an advocate for the Keto Diet as an option in treatment.

You are right. Miriam is terrific. Very good presentation covering a lot of information. I hope to see more of her work on video.
