L-Glutamine
:help: Hi Experts and everyone reading along, I bought some L-Glutamine 500mg today, how much should I be taking of this each day, or do I take it just when I have sugar cravings, it doesn't say on the bottle? Also what other benefits of this supplement provides besides controlling sugar cravings? And should I store it in the refrigerator once opened?

This is a supplement I recently began taken when I heard how it would help with my recovery after strenuous workouts. I had forgotten about it's effect (or rather lack of effect on insulin) until recently. I take this in large quantities in powder form based on the forumla .3g x LBM. I am not sure what the dose would be for your requirements, but I am sure someone will come along to help :)

Thanks Nat, I think I will buy the powder form next time once these pills are done. I'm only walking right now, which is not very strenuous, but I think all the other benefits will be good for me.
I searched the web last night and this is what I came up with. L-glutamine is a nonessential amino acid that supplies energy to the brain. (Which I need so bad!) :daze: It can be used for: Combating the effects of alcoholism Alleviating hypoglycemia Fatigue reduction Improving exercise endurance Growth hormone release Benefitting the liver and intestines Maintaining a healthy gastrointestinal tract Strengthening the immune system Serving as fuel for the heart muscle Combating hypoglycemia by raising serum glucose Dosage and use One gram or more may be used as needed. Two grams or more before exercise or sleep may promote growth hormone release. L-glutamine is most effectively utilized when taken on an empty stomach. It is easily soluble in juice or water and is not unpleasant tasting. For optimal and quickest absorption, it can be used sublingually (under the tongue). Caution: Insomnia may occur from overstimulation if L-glutamine is taken too close to bedtime. |
L-Glutamine pills don't have enough glutamine in them to be very useful, unless you really pound them down.
I take 2.5-5g of Glutamine powder per day after my morning work-out (the amount depends on the intensity of the workout). Taking glutamine can really cut down on muscle soreness and recovery time. One other side-effect to look out for: constipation. It doesn't happen to everyone, but for some people it slows down the bowel and hardens the stool. It it happens to you, take a fiber supplement with the glutamine (I take a spoonful of Kretchmer wheat bran). |
Thanks for the tip, tonsil. While I havent been constipated I have noticed things have changed a bit of late ;) Time to up the psyllium!

L-Glutamine for alcohol cravings....
L-Glutamine works well for alcohol cravings too and is used relatively frequently by those who want to curb their alcohol usage for whatever reason.
