Forskolin

Hi there,

I did a search on this on the forums and any mentions of it are from a few years ago.

Dr. Oz (I know, I know it was a one off) mentioned this supplement that comes from the Coleus forskohlii that grows in tropical areas. Apparently, it has been associated with fat burning.

I did a little research on the web and actually found a few scientific papers that SEEM to support it. But goodness only knows who funded the studies.

Anyone here have any experience with this?

Oh, wait!! Is that the same Dr Oz that says you'll lose weight if you follow his guidelines?
If that is the case, why would you need this supplement?
A bit confused.......

Cerridwen Sat, Mar-26-11 16:43

:b....Now that was hardly helpful Jem LOL. I was looking for info on the supplement not insult hurling at Dr. Oz (though totally understandable :) )

I am not, nor have I ever been a proponent of Dr. Oz. I do not follow his teachings or believe in his low-fat, high fiber, hi carb regimes.

Okay, now then, forskollin anyone?

C.

Seriously people. Grow up! You are being less then helpful with my inquiry.
:) :)

cnmLisa Sat, Mar-26-11 18:42

I apologize, you're right we are LESS than helpful:)

I haven't heard of it but would like to see if anyone else has.

Another one that came up recently on Dr. Mercola's sight was irvingia gabonensis.

Who knows about any of these things.

It's 'supposed' to enhance thyroid, but...um...all they really 'studied' was TSH (and TSH, in any normal human being, goes up and down three whole POINTS in any given day...and is why it should not be used as a measurement of thyroid hormones).

Studies doing T4, T3 (or FT4, FT3) showed no remarkable changes whatsoever. So, claims (in ads for a product that includes it on bodybuilding websites, sigh) that it 'ups metabolism by enhancing thyroid'. Um. Ok. I take T4 and T3 (as well as T1 and T2) to enhance MY hormones which are replaced well.

It also 'claims' to lower IgE (I have a rare allergic disorder in which my IgE is 2200 times the normal) but didn't work for me in 15 months.

It IS showing some hope in the glaucoma studies though. So, that's a good thing.

I just have to remember when sites first started saying L Carnitine 'raises the metabolism' I was very startled (having seen a study done on hyPERthyroidism where L Carnitine was given to slow the thyroid and it worked well). Each to their own I suppose.

This is one of the links that I found to an actual published study...
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16129715
Most other scientific articles cite this study. The body building sites are just that.
I am not looking for a magic pill, just curious!

Wait - I AM looking for a magic pill!!! If you find it please share.

CallmeAnn Sun, Mar-27-11 20:22

I have tried it in a patch. I wasn't impressed

Neanderpam Mon, Mar-28-11 07:54

Oh, I hear ya on the 'magic supplement' thing. But I was being told to take L Carnitine by a couple of my physicians. And I did my 'research'. And, yes, I am thrifty. You won't catch me ever taking something because someone (who had the most minimal couple days of nutrition studies ...that would be doctors) tells me too.

You SHOULD research this. My own family is in a published study in NIH. I'm just saying that you go and get the facts first. If over 6,000 people have taken it for a particular reason, and it worked for 90% of them, then I'd try it.

But, wait a minute. How about a magic wand? Yeah, that's the ticket!

The weird thing about L-Carnitine was that it blocked the undesirable side-effects of hyperthyroid without actually reducing thyroid hormones. So folks were speculating you could make people hyper and give them L-Carnitine to help them lose weight.

I did notice some strange effects with L-Carnitine. I got kind of hot and hyper feeling.

I'm definitely in the list of folks who wouldn't mind a magic-pill. Low carb/diet alone isn't fixing the problem for me.
