USNews & World Report 2018 Best Diets

The US News and World Report is at least consistent...yet again they put whatever low carb diet is popular dead last. This year it is Keto and Whole 30. Previously it has been Paleo, Dukan, Atkins, etc.

From Vegan To 'Keto' And Mediterranean: Experts Rank 2018's Best Diets.

Keto: https://health.usnews.com/best-diet/keto-diet

For Mediterranean Diet (#1) they did use the Oldways definition.

David Katz is one of the "experts". No more need be said.

Sure, having some "experts" vote makes much more sense than reviewing the relevant literature.

In the diabetes diets category, reversal of diabetes doesn't seem to be considered a relevant factor.

Quote:
• Best Diets Overall combines panelists' ratings in all seven categories. All categories were not equally weighted. Short-term and long-term weight loss were combined, with long-term ratings getting twice the weight. Why? Quick results are important after the holidays or when summer looms, but a diet's true test is whether it can be sustained for years. That's especially the case for those who are overweight or obese; losing as little as 5 percent of body weight can dramatically reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease.

They were looking for diets that were barely effective over extended periods of time. Or maybe I'm just feeling snarky.

Calianna Wed, Jan-03-18 15:35

No, I don't think you're being snarky. A measly 5% loss for the overweight or obese is actually quite pathetic, even if the numbers are bigger for someone who is obese than it is for someone who only has a couple of vanity pounds to lose.

What are they looking at sustaining for years - the loss, or the diet? Both? I know of very few people who lost weight on calorie counting/LF who were able to sustain either for years, since special occasions (with the temptation of lots of food) happen several times a year. It's all too easy to go off plan, and gain it all back. Even if you go back on plan and lose it again, that's not sustaining either your loss or your diet. It's regaining the weight you already lost, and starting the diet all over again.

When LC is a way of life, it's easy to sustain both the loss (usually way more than a lousy 5% loss) and the diet.

The only catch is that it needs to be a way of life, not a diet that you go on to lose the weight, then off as soon as you're done losing. If you do that, you'll have the same weight regain results as someone who loses on strict calorie counting/LF, then starts eating normally again.

I remember when I would fall for this kind of propaganda...

64dodger Wed, Jan-10-18 08:08

Is this a joke. Come on the Dash diet eat 4-6 servings of grains each day.

Nancy LC Wed, Jan-10-18 09:29

I never read those articles because they're such BS.

GRB5111 Wed, Jan-10-18 09:29

Yep, it's a joke. More of the same from the self-appointed "nutrition establishment."

That satire is great.

But seriously, have you ever met anyone who says "I am on the DASH Diet" ?
Me, never. And we all know people with high BP.

Maybe it is the best Unknown diet because it doesn’t work and doctors know that?

Last paragraph in its description...
"As for weight loss, you're advised to ask your doctor about how to best tailor your plan. Because DASH emphasizes so many healthful foods, it can easily support weight loss. Just move more and eat slightly less, says the NHLBI."

Yup...that's works every time. why the US is so slim and healthy since they designed it.

First experience with Dr. Berry. Like him! I didn't watch the terrific satire video all the way to the end (I'm the choir and he was singing my song). However, I did click over to his discussion of Supplements in the list of videos to the right, and found that edifying.

Thanks for the introduction!

Just subscribed to Dr. Berry's Youtube channel. He keeps it real and simple. I like him as well.
