Running specific training?

hey guys, I wanted to post this in the "Specific exercises" forum. But it seems inactive. So thought I'd seek some advice from here. I'm a running enthusiast and have been for while now. I've been training for some months now with a focus to prepare as a triathlete. And I have to admit I haven't been able to totally adjust my training with my diet which I started 3 months ago. I have received some advice about trying a sport specific training program like these http://www.velocitysportsmed.com/se...cific-training/
http://beta.active.com/running/Arti...rength-Training

The info I received is convincing on the advantages of adopting such a training program. But I'm concerned about whether it would be effective along with the diet plan I'm pursuing. A ketogenic diet does not necessarily help much when strength training after all, which would be a necessary part of such training. Any suggestions on how to go about this?

Hi Nathan6,

It would help if you could give us a basic idea of where you are now and what you're thinking of trying. What do you typically do in a week (what, how fast/long, etc.), what are your goals for next year's season, and how much time do you have for training? Also, how much background do you have in swimming, biking, and running?

Generally, doing "other" activities can help you, just make you tired, or hurt you, depending on what they are and how compatible they are with your plan.

For example, if you are primarily a cyclist, and you want to make your harder days harder, don't do an hour on the stairmaster on your off days. You'll just get tired and make your harder days easier than you want them to be. Instead, doing an easy half hour spin on the bike will help you recover and get you rested and ready for the next day's hard ride.
