Question about sweet potato
Hi Everyone..
quick question (probably already answered but I'm at work and don't have time to search the forum).. Are sweet potatoes forbidden on atkins? I know they are pretty high in carbs but is it ok to eat a small piece (like a quarter of a sweet potato). I had a small piece yesterday and was in heaven but my weight did go up (probably water retention) and I can't help but wonder if it was the sweet potato. I brought a small bit with my lunch and I'm not sure if I should eat it. Help please ( i have lunch in 2 hrs) Thanks in advance Determine |
hey girl, if you are on induction, i've got bad news. potatoes of any kind are not on the list of acceptable foods for induction. see the whole list here: http://atkins.com/Archive/2001/12/15-464579.html
you can go without it tho! :) if you aren't on induction, i don't know the answer. :) |
Sweet potatoes are very high carb and probably should be saved for small amounts in premaintanance or maintanance.
If you love the taste of sweet potatoes there is a squash that tastes alot like them. You can also use pumpkin (it's even induciton allowed) and make dishes that resemble sweet potatoes. I get the canned pure pumpkin for ease, though you can roast your own. |
thanks to all who posted a reply.
I have to admit I ate the little piece of sweet potato I brought in to work for lunch (with my shrimp and chicken) but won't be eating anymore from here on. too bad though, because it was sooooooooo good. Thanks everyone Determine |
I eat a small amount of sweet potato every once in a while.Usually when we have roast beef with turnips and carrots. It has never b othered me and if it is only once in awhile I am sure it is ok after all we are on this plan for life.

For later reference if you are still on Induction and worried about the acceptable foods list you can always go online too
Acceptable foods http://atkins.com/Archive/2001/12/15-464579.html If you are on OWL and more responsible for your own food choices, then online carb counters such as fitdya could be alot of help. You can also look up the glycemic load of certain foods which not only gives you the carbs, but also the quality of carbs. |
Sweet Potato substitute?
LadyBelle - you mentioned a squash that tastes similar to sweet potato, what is the name of that squash?
TIA, Kristen |
Kristen, LadyBelle hasn't posted here for a couple of years or more.

:) Another squash that tastes like sweet potato is the delicata squash. It is absolutely amazing and tastes just like sweet potato. :yum: I have made a "sweet potato souffle" recipe I found on another forum that is very good! All of the winter squashes have less carbs than the butternut as well --delicata squash, 7 carbs 1 fiber per 3/4 cup. ~hth :)carmen

Thanks everyone.
I live in Boston, so my best chance at getting the delicata would be at Whole Foods I think. Butternut is readily available here though. But the 7 net carbs of the delicata is appealing. I am trying to modify this recipe and really wanted the texture of the potato: African Peanut Chicken stew http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/af...en_peanut_stew/ |

As you said, quite carby but fine for rung 8 of OWL. :agree: |
