I had the strangest thing happen yesterday. I've been doing focused, loyal, strict induction for 5 weeks. I know I've lost, I really feel it.

THEN I pulled on my "fat" jeans yesterday. TIGHT!!! I mean...these are the jeans I wore over a month ago, and they felt TIGHTER!!!!

To make a long story short, ruling out the TOM, I concluded that hot dogs hold an ENORMOUS amount of water for me. It just blows my mind how different those jeans felt!

Anyway, it really threw me off for most of the day. I have to stay away from scales because the up and down really affects my focus.....but THAT!!!! I became very discouraged before I finally used the logic to figure it out.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Yup...certain foods cause a lot of bloating for me as well such as those with lots of sodium (processed meats, pork rinds, cheese) and certain veggies as well as anything with sugar alcohols in it. TOM will add an inch or two to my tummy and so will being constipated.
All I can suggest is try to cut back on the salty foods and drink plenty of water to help flush out any water retention that is going on.

Eating foods you are allergic to can also cause bloating. Just thought you should know :)

Wordlady,
It is interesting that you brought that up. I never considered it would be certain foods that might cause bloating. I find it surreal when i look at the scale, see that i have lost about 12 lbs, but my jeans fit as tightly as ever.... Where is that weight going? lol - maybe i am losing it off my ankles...

I know that if you dont drink enough water, you will RETAIN water.

Also sodium.

Also drinking. :spin:

Also "that time of the month" ;)

Any food that has salt in it will cause bloating - sausage, hot dogs, cold cuts, bacon. This is why you should stick to meats that are "natural" - steak, chicken, veal, pork, lamb, etc...

I only eat the "salty" meats once in a while because I have a tendancy to "bloat" up especially now that I am taking my allergy medications.

Yeah - I had that experience with my sweat pants last friday. I had not worn them in a few weeks and when I pulled them on they were tight I was amazed. I have been wearing other pants that did not fit last Fall (prior to LC'ing) and these were my ugly - wear in the house only - fat pants.

It is approaching TOM for me, so I have to believe that's it. But my first thought was that they really shrunk in the dryer. :spin:

Lessara is right! Foods you are allergic to can cause bloating. I am allergic to corn, and if I have popcorn...I bloat up like a pumpkin. And you don't have to break out in hives or have trouble breathing to be allergic to a food. Also, some allergic reactions to foods can be delayed as much as 48 hours! So it can be really hard to detect the food culprit.

Did you wash your jeans in hot water or put them in a hot dryer by chance?

can someone still be losing weight and inches even though they have bloating going on? sometimes the measuring tape is as discouraging as the scale. i had lost a couple inches only to see i had gained them back! but then my jeans feel loser everywhere else. so can someone still be losing inspite of that? if so, life can go on......

Thanks for the reminder.
This weekend, I've eaten probably most of my "bloating" types of foods, so this morning the scales were mean to me (Monday is my weigh-in day).

I had sausages (2)
Bacon ( a few slices)
A little Splenda
A couple pork rinds

Now, although this was not all in the same meal, and was spread over the whole weekend, it obviously made an impact.

Not only do I feel bloated, I also feel constipated. Not a great way to get on the scale and expect anything less than a bad time.

I will have to be more conscientious about my meals from now on. Unfortunately, there are sausages in the freezer that need to be consumed in the next month, because we are moving (either that, or find someone that would like to have them). I don't think there is anything else there that will harm.

Of all the times for my son to ask for bacon - it was the day after I cleaned up that out of the freezer - I just can't win!

Anyone know if asparagus can cause bloating? I've gone a bit nuts with it because it's been in season here so it's cheap, fresh and I love it...but I've noticed a lot of gas and a bloated feeling. I cut back on salt a few days ago and as of today am cutting back on the asparagus, but I was just curious if anyone else had ever had that happen.

Boy, I'm not weighing or using a tape measure after today, I had pork rinds, burgers, sausage, splenda, I know I was dedicated to my low carb woe, but I know I have some serious waterweight gain.

The only time I get bloated is when I eat grains or raw vegetables, which I've discovered lately I seem to be sensitive to, I do much better with cooked vegetables, blanching is enough. Today I indulged in some popcorn at the movies and did I pay for it. I guess I needed that reminder.

I generally get all my fiber from these low carb / good fiber vegetables that DO NOT cause gas or bloating (at least not for me). Try some!

Spinach and kale, radish, greens (collard, mustard, dandelion, beet & turnip), romaine/boston lettuce, red-leaf chicory (Arugula), watercress, bamboo shoots,
endive, escarole.
Zuchinni, avocado
