Any opinions about flouride and carregean(sp?) and other
ingredients under the suspicion of being harmful?
Mel
Recently I read an interesting article in either Science or
Discover about how small doses of otherwise harmful material
can have positive effects rather than negative. Much like the
concept of homeopathy, if you believe in that.
Personally, re flouride, I think it's about choosing your
evils. If you are blessed with perfect saliva and no
cavities, then go without flouride. If you're having problems
preventing cavities, then either brush after every meal with
a non-flouride toothpaste or just accept fluoride as the
lesser evil.

Just a thought.... How many people get cavities after their
20s anyway? I thought that was mostly a problem with children
and young adults.

How about carageenan in toothpaste?

Teeth lose essential nutrient minerals such as calcium and
phosphorus all the time from acid attacks to the teeth.
However, the saliva replenishes these minerals. When the
de-mineralization outpaces re-mineralization, it's a cavity.
It never made any sense to us to add fluoride. Why not add
calcium and phosphorous and other known tooth and bone
beneficial minerals to your diet if cavities are a problem.
Fluoride is not an essential nutrient.
Actually, Enamelon toothpaste tried to do that. Studies
showed it's calcium phosphorus formual worked better than
fluoride. But the belief in fluoride bolstered by constant
advertising and your dentist's approval and maybe impossible
marketing against the big toothpaste manufacturers and
Enamelon went bankrupt.

There's this - relating to colon cancer:

Carageenan is avoided by those concerned about MSG.
Here's what the carageenan advocates say:

The bottom link is about carrageen and not carrageenan.
The top link is very interesting. I suppose it isn't much
of a consequence in toothpaste, but I surely don't want it
in my food.
Thanks, Tim. You do nice work researching things. BTW, those
soy links you provided were very interesting.

Mel,
I think you worry about the wrong things. Do you wear a seat
belt? Probably that is 1,000 times more likely to save your
life than avoiding alleged questionableingrediants. How do you
come up with new things to worry about? SARS isn't here yet.

Yes, I always wear a seatbelt. Worry? Well, you didn't help by
posting those links concerning the danger of eating soy
products. :-(

If you are curious about why the ADA recommends adding
fluorides to toothpaste:
Hydroxyapatite is the primary mineral component of bone and
teeth. It has the chemical formula of 3Ca3(PO4)2·Ca(OH)2 and
in crystal form is a needle-shaped crystal which is arranged
with other needles in a rosette. It melts above 1100°C and
cannot be dissolved in water..... but like any basic salt will
dissolve in weak acids., ie at mouth pH. Add fluoride to form
a basic fluoride salt of calcium phosphate and the reactivity
drops significantly.

Very interesting. But isn't the only reason the ADA endorses
flouride is for cavity prevention? :-)
