I started checking my blood sugar yesterday, and I'm a little confused about how to interpert my readings...

I don't have diabetes... yet... but according to my doctor I'm well on my way and need to start being careful now. There has also been some suspect of hypoglycemia, especially as I have ALL the symptoms.

My blood sugar yesterday ranged from 88 (fasting) to 106 (just after dinner)... this morning it was 88 when I got up but spiked to 144 after breakfast...

I just am not sure where "average" and "healthy" levels cut off.

Any help would be great. *g* I'm going to keep track of all of these and discuss a plan of action with my doctor after a week, but for now I'm just wondering what it all is saying about me.

Hi Bree!

Well...for starters, you need to post how long after eating you are testing along with what the readings are. A blood glucose of 144 an hour after eating a normal meal isn't wildly high, but it would be if it were 2 our 3 hours after eating. It helps to keep a food diary and note what foods make your blood sugars go higher and which ones don't seem to have much affect. Note what you ate and then what your blood sugar readings were 2 hours later.
Specific times to test would be fasting, 1 hour after meals (only if you're actually diabetic), 2 hours after meals and at bedtime.
Normal ranges for fasting are between 70 and 110. You want your readings 2 hours after meals to be below 120.
HTH!

Well, looks like normal person blood sugar readings to me (if it was right after breakfast).

First, did your doctor recommend you start checking your BG? The reason why is usually if you are a diabetic or impaired glucose tolerance, the fasting sugar would be > 100. That the usual SOP to determine if you are a diabetic. A BG of 88 after fasting does not meet that criteria.

Just so you understand the numbers.

Morning fasting > 100
After meals > 160 one hour
After meals > 120 three hours (I believe)

Good luck,
