I just posted this on the Introduce yourself forums and after taking a look around I found the place for diabetics!! I have been reading all of your posts and you have already answered many questions for me! Thank you.

I am a type 1 diagnosed at age 39 after an overdose of steroids. I was living overseas (Sri Lanka) at the time. I came home and tried to learn as much as I could about diabetes for 3 months then went back and took care of myself. My control was BAD! The next year I went on an insulin pump. I improved my control or at least I could get out of trouble quicker but I have never gotten a handle on it. I haven’t had much hope of ever getting my blood sugars low and keeping them there till I started to cut out the carbs! WOW – I have hope now!

I started on Atkins one month ago because my husband wanted company while he did it. I was quite leery because of my diabetes and was sure I would keep going low. I was shocked that my blood sugars started leveling out. I would wake up in the mornings and just giggle because they would be close to normal.

The Dr.'s have labeled me "Brittle" because I can bounce around like crazy with Blood Sugars from 25 to 600+ being the norm instead of the exception. My A1c is 8 (not good) I have had diabetes for ten years and I am starting to get complications. I picked up Dr. Bernstein's book Diabetes solution and I didn't realize that this book was about a low carb diet. I haven't finished the book but am finding it fascinating and learning things that my Endo's never told me. (I thought I knew it all!)

I quit smoking one year ago and have put on about 30 unwanted pounds. I never had really tried to lose weight since I became a diabetic but found out just how hard it was. I haven't had too hard a time adjusting to this new way of eating -- except for starting to get a bit sick of sugar free jello!

I am trying to navigate my way around this site and hope to find encouragement and be an encouragement to others if possible. Gamache

(I just love these little smiley faces)

Hi Gamache...Happy to meet you!

I am very new here too. I have been reading this site for a almost a week now. These guys really know their stuff! I know you will find great advice and support!

I bought Dr Bernstein's book Tuesday and read it cover to cover. I have a family history of Diabetes and recently have found some "wierd and unusual' glucose readings! Anyway, I will always be around. I have been on LC for about 10 months. Lost 40 lbs and feel really good. I know you will have great success with LC.

Hi Gamache...I have found that low-carbing evens out my blood sugars too. I used to have tons of highs and lows while following the "diabetic" diet and was worried when i started low-carbing about what it would do to my blood sugar. I was amazed to find out that it not only lowers it, but keeps it stable all day long, even with exercising!
