I know this has been asked a million times before and I have just read the article on sweeteners, but I still just don't get it..

Yesterday, I discovered a store locally that sells a variaty of LC items..(YEAH!!)..I bought some flax-o-meal cereal and granola, along with several other things. I got into a discussion with the owner about sugar alcohol. Of course the bulk of the products are sweetened with splenda or maltitol. I was trying to explain to her my understanding of these sweeteners. She was adament that they NOT be counted as carbs. I couldn't find the right words to explain that they "might" really count toward carb intake. Soooooo, today I came here to find out what I should REALLY have told her so that I wouldn't have looked like some shmuch, just talking out of my sleeve...

Anyone REALLY understand how the whole sugar alcohol thing works?

sheaman - I got into the exact same conversation with the owner of a lo-carb store in my area - I spoke to her about the digesting of sugar alcohols, the effects on your stomache, and them possibly inducing cravings. She was soooo adamant that they were great and okay for induction - she kept giving me samples every time I had a good point (to shut me up).

I left there with a horrible stomachache and spent the day in the bathroom - I guess I proved my point.

I will now email the owner of the store the article on sugar alcohol!

Not that it is in her best interest to pass the word onto her customers..lol..

You both helped so much,
