I have a friend who has a blood sugar tester and we decided to do a test. Im not sure if this will even tell me anything....but I hadnt eaten and we took my blood sugar and it was 117. I then had a Pure de-lite candy bar with 18 carbs and 15 sugar alcohols. 20mins later tested my blood sugar and it was 137. Im trying to figure out, since it did raise my blood sugar, if raising it 20 is good or not. Anyone know?
I am afraid to eat the sugar alcohols, but wanted to know if they effect me or not.
I am not a diabetic and this test may not tell me anything, but does anyone have any idea?

A 20 point jump in 20 minutes, I believe, is indicative of having consumed sugars (and that the body is reacting, appropriately perhaps, to them).

I would conclude, therefore, that the Pure de-Lite bars have a substantial effect on your blood sugar because of the sugar content.

It is exactly this sugar content that we want, to some extent, to avoid so that the Atkins diet will work.

I would suggest another test that, I suspect, will illustrate quite clearly what's going on: Take your sugar upon waking, eat some scrambled eggs or some low-carb cheese or some meat and take your sugar 20 minutes later.

If it's substantially less that 20 units higher (i.e., if it goes from 117 to 122, for example), than you know those Pure de-Lite bars are not nearly as appropriate for this diet as the food you just ate.

I'd be curious what you find out.

Is there any way to teat your blood sugar without actually having to prick yourself with a needle?
thanks

The tester that your freind has - is it just a finger prick needed to get the blood? and do you know if they are expensive - I'd like to test my blood sugar.

Yeah its one that you put the strip in the top of the reader....then you prick your finger and put your blood on the strip. Takes 20 secs to read it. He said that one cost him $100. I was like, whoa...didnt know they were that expensive.

That is expensive!! I just found out from Wanda that she got one on sale for $10.00 but the strips are 50.00 a box - maybe I'll just try to make friends with a diabetic and use theirs once in a while :)

OK, I did a search on the blood sugar and found out that caffeine raises blood sugar. When I ate the candy bar I had taken two of my diet pills which contain 80mg caffeine. Soooo.....I am gonna do this all over tomorrow morning. Im gonna take the test first thing when I get up. Then I will eat another sugar alcohol loaded candy bar and then re-test 30mins later.
