I have lost 3 lbs since starting Atkins almost a month ago. I keep my fat way up, and my carbs around 20. I exercise frequently and am young so I really don't understand whats going on. I tried cutting calories but that leaves me absolutely famished. (Tried to cut to 1200 but ended up eating more like 1700-2000). I have all but abandoned the calorie count idea since I refuse to be miserable. It seems unlikely that I have a metabolism prob at such a young age and since I have never been significantly overweight but i don't know what else it could be. (No cheese allergy, probably not candidita, lots of H2O, etc). I was 115lbs just a few months ago so I know its not unattainable. Sooooo, I think I will buy some L-carnitine. Anybody have experience w/ this? Does it help?

I use L-carnitine & it seems to help me. If you decide to buy it, then take 500mg before breakfast, 500mg before lunch, & 500mg before supper. L-carntitne is a free form amino acid which helps repair muscle & aid the body in using fat as fuel. I don't think this will speed your weight loss, as you admit you don't think you have a meatbolic problem. I think your weight loss is slow because you have so little to lose. Adding L-carnitine won't hurt any, but don't be surprised if you continue down a slow path. Stick with it and be patient. The closer we are to our goal, the slower our loss- fact. Make sure you're drinking plenty of water, taking a good multi-vitamin, and a calcium/magnesium suplement (calcium helps weight loss too). Good luck.
God Bless,

I, too, have used L-carnitine in the past and I forgot how wonderful it was! This is my triumphant return to LC and I am bound and determined to stick with it!! Unfortunately, I am losing weight at a much slower rate this time around (didn't know how good I had it when I lost 40lbs the 1st mo. last time!). I'm going to get back into L-Carn. because last time I really noticed a difference when I was taking supplements, which I haven't been doing this time.

Silly me! It really sucks getting older--your memory just isn't the same! :daze:

Hi everybody. I was going through my low carb library yesterday and picked up Living Low-Carb by Fran McCullough. Great Book!!! Anyway, I reread the chapter called Secret Weapons, and it was there that I learned about nutritional supplements that are helpful to low carbers. Since I've been stuck at a 30 pound loss for a month after 10 weeks on the Atkins Program (and am getting frustrated), I went to the health food store and this morning I started my day with L-Carnitine, flaxseed oil, CoQ10 and Milk Thistle (for liver cleansing) plus plenty of water. I'm also drinking at least 75 oz of water per day. I just ordered the Firm cardio sculpt but have been doing power walking.

This is my first post. Sorry I went on and on. But I'm psyched about the supplements and I'm hoping that increasing the water and exercising will help me break this stall.

Any suggestions or any help is greatly appreciated. I want to lose 100 more pounds. Oh, by the way, I feel great and look much smaller and younger.

Hi everybody, I live in Canada and L-Carnitine is not legal (we get it anyway) The canadian gov't has some strange rules.

Anyhow, recently noticed that both my cat and dog food have, yes, L-carnitine.My dog is on a special diet for pancreatitis and her food not only has L-Carn but also L-glutamine, chromium, selenium, flax meal, and primrose oil. Sounds good eH? It's called Gastro formula. A little expensive but good for her. She's hitting 14 soon.

Strange that the dog can have L-Carn legally but I can't!!

Bye for now. HL

Oh, forgot to mention. The cat food with L-Carn is for overweight cats. (hummmm)

Only a few single amino acid supplements are available legally in Canada ... glutamine, taurine and I think that's it. Yes, many health food stores will have it "under the counter". However, carnitine and others like tyrosine are available in combination products. The problem is, the amounts are so ridiculously small, that it's worthless.

L-carnitine is criminally expensive. The studies that were done showing its beneficial effect for body fat burning used 4,000 to 6,000 mg per day. In DANDR, Atkins states some of his patients have needed up to 8,000 mg per day to see any benefit. CoQ10 *may* enhance its effect, but it too is very expensive. In lower doses, carnitine is helpful for heart health and possibly lowering cholesterol.

I take carnitine (1500 mg) every day along with phenylalanine (500 mg), and, even though I haven't lost any weight (another story...), my energy level has improved dramatically. My supplement regimen has been the most helpful part of my daily routine and new way of life.

Carnitine + Phenylalanine = Energy (for me)

Does anyone know of a good article that can document both the risks and benefits of l-carnitine? I have lost 90lbs and am stuck on the last 10. I was thinking of adding carnitine to my daily. I drink about 96 ounces of water per day and exercise minimally 30 minutes ( walking 1.5 miles in that time) as well as an additional 15-20 minutes of ab work. My carbs are really low and I do not show that I am in lyposis or ketosis ( I know they are the same, but it all depends on what you call it).
