Hi. I used to use a Lifecycle at my gym, and loved it.
Financial situation is such that I can't go to the gym
anymore, so I am looking for a exercise bike for use at home.
Lifecycles cost a fortune, so I was looking for suggestions as
to more affordable brands and styles.

Must-have features:
- Magnetic resistance (not just a big fan to spin around)
- Different pre-set training routines (e.g., hill-climb,
level, random, etc)
- RPM readout
- Upright, not recumbant
- Pulse monitor

Any suggestions?

Yes, check out used sporting goods stores. There's a chain
called "Play It Again Sports".

Also call the gyms in your area and inquire about what they do
with old machines when they upgrade to new ones. You might be
able to arrange something with them.

Finally, eBay.

Another alternative is a real bicycle and a gadget that
converts it to a stationary bicycle. If you already own a bike
this can be very inexpensive, especially if you did as I did
and find a used wind trainer for $10 at a garage sale. Even
brand new resistance trainers aren't all that expensive. See
http://www.performancebike.com or similar.

Just one data point, but the PIAS in Mt. View, CA ripped
me off big time. I bought a $90, brand new golf bag which
basically fell apart on the 3rd use, and they lied to me
repeatedly about how they were going to replace it and/or
get in touch with the manufacturer and/or somehow or
other make it right. Never the same person answering the
phone twice, never one person who knew what the other was
doing, the boss never once being available, no one ever
once returning a phone call despite multiple promises to
do so. My personal opinion is that one should avoid them
like poison.
