Hey! Anyone with a young daughter who can give mine some encouragement? She ls just turned 11 and has started the lo-carb diet with me. She is 164 lbs. She started at 172...so she lost 8 lbs. in 2 weeks. She started with me I only lost 5!! The problem is I just can't get her excited about it. She is very sensitive to comments about her weight and can't see the good she has already acomplished. She just sees what she can't eat. It is hard too because she has 4 sisters and one brother home who make sure they point out in a not so kind way at times what she can and cannot have. She would like to have someone to encourage and talk to her and keep her focused. I know you have to be 13 to be on this forum but maybe someone can write to me for her to read. Can we do that here? Thanks. Mary Laczkoskie

Hi There! I would be glad to email your daughter (not through the board....or on the board...whatever she is comfortable with) and I am 16, 166, and I have struggled for a while, so I do know how she feels in a way. I believe my email is in my profile - so tell her to feel free to email me! I would be glad to try and help! Thanks, Victoria

I know how hard having your daughter on this wol is. I had my 10 y/o on this way of eating and it ( modified ) was horrible! (A constant battle )I finally couldn't take it anymore! She was excited to loose weight but found only 60 carbs was too restricting for her. She too focused on all the junk she was not allowed to eat. On 60 carbs in two weeks she lost 6 lbs. She went from 105 to 99 lbs. I kept her on an even less restrictive diet with cheats during the weekends and she lost 3 more lbs. over the next 5 or 6 weeks. Granted it was no fast loss but it worked. UNTIL I just gave up and stopped arguing with her. She would have cheats at school and lc but higher fat at home and I was afraid her carbs and my extra fat in her diet would cause a gain. So, I quit for a while. Now that she saw herself in her bathing suit already this year, I'm hoping we can talk about this food thing again. If you're still interested in having our daughters write drop a note in my journal or PM me and we can exchange e-mails from there.
Later,
Heather

Hey Heather, Thanks for writing back. my e-mail is marylaczkoskie~excite.com My daughter is trying so hard she lost 10 lbs lo carbing with some friends and you could see the difference in her face and clothes immediately. She is more faithful about it than her friends but it is hard for her when they cheat, then she can't help herself. I'll ask her about writing and you can check it out with your daughter. I see there is a word limit so I'll post off here. Mary Laczkoskie

hey Sterlina, Thanks for writing. I'll ask my daughter to write you her IM is lazyhomeschooler (I think) try it and see if you get her. She is away at a homeschool co-op and you can tell her you were talking to her mom on the forum. I'll try to find out if that is the right one. I've been away-Going to school for Geriatric nurse's Aide and It has been hard studying and lo-carbing. Hope to get back on track now that I have to bring my own lunch on my "on the job training.!! I dated an overweight woman in high school, I know the thing she used to complain about most was her parents always nagging her about it. A couple things to know, children/teens always want to do what their friends are doing, eat the foods there friends are etc! The way my ex lost her weight was she saw how much I enjoyed working out and it started to rub off. I took her to the gym with me and taught her how to lose the weight! After a while it wasnt the diet her parents put her on or the diet I made her do but the lifestyle she chose! and that is essential. I would reccomend talking to her siblings as well, let them know how serious this is and being mean/rude to her wont help, for the most part it will lead to emotional eating. Sometimes children adapt a new way of eating over time. Let her know how good veggies and fruits are! always keep them around the house and accesible. Don't buy so many sweets and sodas! and reward her if she does well on the diet! I used to do 6 days on a diet then the 7th eat whatever I wanted. This worked until my stomach shrunk so much I couldnt bare eat that much food! All it takes is time.
Good luck,
Battousai

I was pleased to see some others on here that is putting their children on this diet. I have a 14 yr. old that is almost 300 pounds. He does not eat a lot and is active but he just piles the weight on. I have had him tested for his thyroid and it is normal. He is a good and likeable kid but is already having some health problems due to his size. I asked the doctor about the diet and she poo-pooed the idea sayign it wasn't healthy. Well, neither is being overweight. I only am putting him on this diet as a desperate attempt to help him. I know he would be happier if he was slim becuase he likes girls and loves sports. He is not fighting me as of yet, he is just starting today. I think it would be wonderful if he had a support group closer to his own age. If their are other parents out there whose children might like to buddy up please let me know and we could set them up either with e-mails or msn messenger or whatever. Thanks!

Sometimes Geneticly some people have trouble losing weight. I hope this diet works for him. You might want to think about having surgery done to aide his weightloss. Most insurance companies will cover the cost of the surgery if his weight is a health risk.

When I was 12 years old, I weighed 165 pounds and was 4 foot 11. It was horrible. The one thing I've wanted my entire life was to be thin like "everyone else." It's hard to tell an 11 or 12 year old anything that they'll really be able to understand about something like this... unless they want to understand it.
I tried SO hard at 12. I went on the T-Factor diet, a low-fat diet, and lost 20 pounds right when I hit my growth spurt. I landed at 145 at 5 foot 5. I don't really remember being happy about it. I did work very hard. I think I always felt that one day it would all go away.
It's hard. But 7 years later at 215 pounds (started at 227), I'm ready to finish what I started a long, long time ago.

Hi, i just wanted to note, that if your daughter is not like seriously obese, it might not be a good idea to suggest a diet unless you want to pay for their therapy and rehab treatment for anorexia and bulimia later on in life. My mom put me on a diet when i was 10 lbs overweight at 12 years old. I'm not angry at her or trying to blame her for anything, but it lead to some problems with me later on in life. I have dieted ever since then, suffered with low self esteem, eating disorders and alcoholism, all weight related which started when i was made to diet at 12 years old.
I know most mothers are ignorant to the fact that when you tell a child they need to loose weight, it hurts a lot especially because they might not understand your good intentions, all they see is that their mother thinks that they are not good enough, a mother is supposed to be unconditonally supportive,
If you child is chubby and gets made fun of at school or by other kids the last thing they need from a parent is to be told to loose weight. You can help them many ways without putting them on a diet which is basically just saying - your too fat, something a mother should NEVER say or imply to her child unless she wants to hurt them emotionally.
