Hi everyone! I am new here, but I have been on atkins for 5 days (today is my 5th) and I wear a huge brace, so I cannot tell if I have lost any from my clothes, so today I decided to weigh. My mom told me not to b/c she said it would be discouraging if I havn't lost as much as I had hoped. I have been eating perfect!! So, when I weighed, I had gained 4 pounds. But, here are the factors, first (sorry, I know no one want to heat this!!) but, I am having my monthly right now and I have heard that you do not loose as fast as you normally would if you were not on it. I cant to exercise, so I know I have not gained any muscle. But heres the thing, When I said how much I though I weight before starting the diet, I said 166, ( I weight that about 3 weeks b4 starting) so I think I must have gained more before starting. Am I right in thinking that, or did I just gain weight. I appreciate your input!! Thanks! Victoria

Hi Victoria, welcome!

Well you may have gained weight - but that doesn't mean you've gained fat. In fact if you've been following the programme perfectly, you almost certainly have not gained an ounce of fat.

You have quite possibly retained some water - very common with TOM (time of the month). Also, you may be right in saying your weight was a bit higher than 166 when you started.
so I know I have not gained any muscle.
Not necessarily!
I have seen many folk say they can't have gained muscle because they haven't exercise, but guess what? They have! It partly depends on how much protein you were eating before you began low carbing. If you've just come from eating insufficient protein, to a (WOE) way of eating where your body is finally getting the protein it needs, your body CAN grow more muscle.

Whatever the reason, Victoria, just keep on following the programme and before long you'll see some losses.

Cheers!
