Hi everyone. I was wondering if there were any senior citizens, 55 and over , who are LC'ing and would like to have and give support. I know it is more difficult for us to lose than some of our younger friends and family,,and it helps to have some input from someone who has "Been there, done that", if ya know what I mean! ;)
I am 55 years old, 56 next month actually, and have been LCing since June 2002, so far I have lost only 40 pounds, with lots of ups and downs,,and some stalls.
If there is anyone else who has had success or even problems they could share,,it would be great !
C'mon, lets get it going!!

Hi Betsy,
40lbs is great! Don't knock it. Ive been low carbing since about September 2001 and I've only lost 40lbs too - but I feel much better.
I'm 52 by the way. Senior citizens - come on, we are just reaching our prime!

I'm 50, soon to be 51, and I know what you mean about it being slow going!
Between having a slower metabolism now, and dealing with the usual stalls (and cheats, lets be honest), it can be frustrating.
Nice to know we aren't alone in our endeavors, isn't it!
Have a great day!

Good Morning,
I am also a senior, 64 years young and on Atkins for 1 year now. I feel so good, I joined Curves for Women and gaining more muscle every day. I feel great. Hubby is also on Atkins and he is 65 with COPD and feels great.
Weight is going very very slowly, but I have lost about 8 inches since starting Curves so that means alot. Went from a size 20 to a size 16. Have 30 pounds off in the last year, wish it were more, but with hormones and thyroid medication, it is going very slowly.
We seniors are not alone out here, maybe just afraid to post more.

Hi all. I'm 54, been low carbing since August 02, have lost 33 pounds and feel terrific. I have no joint pain, almost no gastric problems. Had all my blood work done last month and everything was excellent. My doc was thrilled - almost recruited me to lecture her other patients.
This is a terrific way for seniors to eat.
Go for it!

Hi Betsy,
Although I don't think of myself as a senior citizen, I am 58 years old.
I have been doing Atkins for a long time, but I get so frustrated with no losses that I do go on periodic binges. Last year I think I lost a total of 5.75 lbs. Now that is pathetic!
But my doctor is not worried. He totally approves of LC and my bloodwork is all great. I feel much better when I avoid carbs.
Exercising is not as easy for me because I have had a knee replacement (actually 3 new knees in the same leg with a broken leg during that time to boot) so, I will always have some discomfort in that leg and I cannot do some of the exercises I would like to do. I do go to the gym and do some weight lifting, but not to the extent of these younger girls on the board.
I think as we age, we are more apt to accept ourselves the way we are and when I struggle to lose and don't see any results, I have a way of thinking it may not always be worth it. I am happy that I am healthy and don't have most of the problems of a fat senior.

Well, I'm not really a senior citizen (I'm 46) but I CAN tell you that since I hit 40 the weight is harder and harder to handle!
I used to be able to drop 10# like nothing but now it seems like I just can't do that any more. I remain very active getting plenty of exercise but I think my metabolism has slowed down -- especially since my hysterectomy 5 years ago :( I recently joined a food co-op and have been able to purchase organic and whole foods. Up here in the Northwoods that's a real treat because the grocery stores just don't handle these products. I've always been a carb-freak but it amazes me how much I really don't miss the breads, pastas, flours, etc. I used to do ALOT of baking (bran muffins, grainy breads) and have stopped. However, I find the recipes on the low-carb sites to be really fun and VERY good! I would highly suggest you use the recipes with Daikon radish. They're SO yummy and SO good for you.
I hope we can all hang in there and learn to live with eating this way forever. :D

WOW!! Great response everyone!!! :D
I enjoyed every post, and am so encouraged!!! I guess I am average, and should be thankful for the 40 pounds off, eh??
I dont really think of myself as a Senior Citizen either, but I didint know how to address the issue in the thread title....Late Bloomers maybe?? :D
I joined Ladies Only, but have been able to go only once, thanks to the inclement weather we have had here in Indiana. It is supposed tp be Ice and snow tromorrow,,,,no go there either!!
Doing crunches at home though,,,
It is fun hearing my grandkids tell me what a great job I am doing, how skinny I am getting, and encouraging me not to give up. They are so proud of me! And not to mention my husband..he has a new wife. I feel so much better...the joint pain is a lot better, almost gone, and the energy is a plus too. Having fun with the clothes buying too....
LEts keep this thread going...its fun!!! :D

My GOSH!!! When did being in your 50's and 60's become SENIOR CITIZENS????
Okay...I am not there (35) but my parents are 61 & 62 and no where NEAR being senior citizens!!!
I guess since I was raised around so many sweet people in there 70', 80's and 90's!!! That 60 just is not EVEN old to me.
We lived in the country when I was a teenager (just a couple years ago ;) ) and my best friends in the world were Bill & Mildred Lynch who were both in there 80's.
It really is true...you are only as old as you feel!
Good luck to you all!!!

Hi Everyone,
Another senior (62) citizen here. This is my first time ever with low carbing, started just last week and have been thrilled with a 5 lb. loss. I'm doing SB though. I'm very excited about this WOE, struggled for years with no/low fat and was closed minded (sigh) about carbs. I bought into the hype that the only way to lose was low fat. On SB a lot of things are reduced fat but even those products are a treat for me after eating no fat (bleh) for years.
I don't expect to lose very much or very fast as I don't exercise and right now don't plan to either. Maybe when the cold weather goes away I'll think about walking. I have one of my cats trained to walk with a leash so maybe I'll take him out with me. Only thing with cats, they walk when and where they want and at their own pace. But I guess any walking is better than none. It's kind of nice because I meet people that way--I've even had people stop their cars to see if they really were seeing a cat on a leash.
I'm glad to see other seniors here too.

53 here, but mentally still 30! I'm starting from scratch today. I started Atkins just before Thanksgiving and only lost 5 lbs. That's been VERY frustrating.
All the encouragement didn't help either. 5 lbs for the first 2 weeks sounds great!, still 5 after 5 weeks, and everyone said that's 1 lb a week and that's great! Well no it's not. I never lost any more than that, and then I was encouraged to go to the next level, OWL, and guess what? I've gained it back plus 1.
Sorry, to complain! Well here I am, starting over from scratch. I'm glad I found this thread. IT IS HARD TO LOSE AT THIS AGE!
I don't believe I every lost more than water weight and that's why it came back so easily. I've got to micro-manage this WOE and perhaps hanging around with a more "mature" crowd with similar obstacles will help.

 I guess I am too a senior. Im sitting here trying to figure out if Im 51 or 52, soon to be 52 or 53. Whats that tell you. Ok. I figured it out. In April I'll be 52. Becuase the weight comes off more slowly, I get on the scale less frequently, content to be on a WOL that makes me feel better. The fibro and candida are clearing up and I have so much more energy. My big downfall is not exercizing. I will have to work on that. Glad to have found this forum.  Vonnie

Hi!!!
I’m 56 and have lost 32 ponds since May 2002 !! Gained 6 pounds over the holidays.. but have lost 3 of that 6 and working on the other 3.. Not sure all that Christmas eating was worth it!!!LOL
Im sitting here trying to figure out if Im 51 or 52,
LOL!! Been there done that!!!
Looks like we may have our own strand! Call me weird but I really don't mind being considered a senior citizen at 54. Many of us have been at our life's work for 30+ years by now and many of us also have grandchildren. We have quite a bit of experience and many active years ahead to gain more (experience -- not weight!). I think the real problem is that the word "senior" has come to be regarded as negative. Well, we can fix that!
Carry on!

Okay Okay!!!! We are NOT seniors yet,,,,,,just More Mature losers!! M&M's..LOL!!
I really have to agree about the feeling better side of this WOE..... I used to hurt just turning over in bed!! I would literally pull my hip out scooting over!! :( But now I can sleep all night and no pain!
I have discovered pretty lingerie...I never bought any, cause of the weight, but have decided since I have lost,,to indulge! And it makes me feel so much better, kinda sexy!! ;)
I gave away all my fat clothes, so am having fun buying new stuff,,,albeit sometimes at the thrift store,,dont wanna spend too much on a temporary wardrobe!
I have discovered that I have been eating too many carbs in my salad dressing....a friend on here told me to try Paul Newmans,,it only has 1 carb per 2 Tbls.......gotta get some. Trying to cut back and see if my loss starts up again. We have had so much snow here that we cant go to the gym.....thats frustrating. Oh well,,,spring is just around the corner.
What are some of the other weight loss diets you all have tried??
I did Weight Watchers,,,several times,,but the cravings dont go away and that makes it hard. I did the low fat thing,,blech!
Then I invested a lot of money in Physicians Weight Loss..lost a LOT of weight, but only had 700 calories a day...my metabolism took a beating,,and when I started craving peanut Butter, I gained it all back and then some, and went into a deep severe depression. Never again!!! I am so glad I found this WOE, and it makes me feel good to know I am doing it without a financial investment other than the groceries I buy!!
We are gonna do this!!! :spin:

I think I have broken my stall,,,,, :D ...I have been more or less stalled since Christmas...well,,,I started drinking more water and caffeine free drinks,,and I had a two pound loss this morning!!! WHoohoo!! Plus, I am eating more protein and less salad too.I think I got into a rut there for awhile, eating the same stuff every day. And I dropped the salad dressing and have been using mayo instead.
Gor a birthday coming up on the 11th of march,,the big 56, but its not really botheriing me cause I am feeling younger everyday!
Lots of snow here!! 8 inches saturda ngiht, four mor coming tomorrow night. We are ready for spring thats for sure!!

Hi Musicmama
What a great idea to start a "Senior" thread. I have to admit I looked at the members to see if anyone was my age and there are very few. Most of my friends have accepted their bodies the way they are even tho a lot of them are overweight like myself. I went along with their theory all last summer and gained at least 10-15 pounds more than I usually carried...you cannot just eat what you like. I started this WOE on January 7 and have lost 15 pounds.
I will be 65 on 03/03/03. After two months of LC'ng I have more energy than I thought I would ever had. My DH can't understand that I can now stay up til 11:00PM just about every evening when I used to go to bed at 8:00 PM and I still get up at 7:00 AM. I used to blame it on old age. I have never napped and I don't ever want to start. I like feeling young and good. I used to have bouts with low blood sugar and now I haven't had an episode in two months. I go to the Doctor on March 5th for my blood work (BTW I am on 20 grams of Lipitor and my stats are excellent due to the medication) but the doctor said my tryglycerides could be lower so I hope they will be when I get my blood work back. I am also on a blood pressure pill and hormone replacement and hopefully will be able to get off all of these pills in the near future. My blood pressure has already gone down to 115/70 which is pretty good for my age.
Well, I've gone on enough about myself but I am so excited about this plan I can't contain myself. BTW, Musicmama I wanted to mention that I live in Monticello, IN on SHAFER LAKE. We're just about neighbors and fellow Pisceans.
So, whether or not I ever lose another pound I feel so much better than I did and so much more in control of my food. I am in this WOE for the rest of my life and I am finding it very easy to stick to.
Thanks again for starting a good thread...will visit it often.

Hey there neighbor!! Glad to have ya here!! ;)
You know, I have some dear friends who live by the same philosophy about accepting their bodies as they are,,fat and all, They reach fifty and give up on life. One told me to "wear sensible shoes, and forget about it!" Well EXCUSE ME!! But I am not of that mindset!! What a waste of potential,,not to mention LIFE!! There is so much to do,,and so many places to go....I aint givin up this soon!! SO much for "aging gracefully"" I am fighting it to the hilt!! I lost 40 pounds and bought sexy underwear and red patent high heels!!! SO there!!! ;)
I have a great incentive for wanting to stay young though,,,my husband is 16 years younger than I am,,,and I have to keep up with him!! We have been married 15 years and let me tell ya,,he is having so much fun buying me things now!! I have never had so much perfume , and new clothes!! He is really supportive, as are my grown kids and my grandkids,,,they are all getting the biggest kick out of me!!
I am not on any medications at all,,,I guess I should be thankful for that, eh? I an going to get my blood pressure checked though, cause when I went to the gym to work out,,they took it and it was high, I have always had low blood pressure, so what sup with that?? Anyway, I feel great. I know what ya mean about staying up late and getting up early!! :D I do too. I love the way this WOL makes ya feel,,,that alone should be enough to make us want to stay on it for life!
Well, guess I will go check out a few other threads and then get to bed,,work tomorrow.
Thanks for posting,,,,,looking forward to more!!

Hello Ladies:
I am trying to lose 61 lbs and being 50 isn't easy. The metabolism just doesn't work the same when you are younger, but "age is just a number" and I think I look pretty darn good for 50. Currently, I have stop drinking tea/coffee to see how much more I can drop during the Induction Phase.
I would love to join in from time to time and exchange ideas and things like that. Currently on the 4th day of Induction. Been doing Atkins since 12/29/02, but wasn't dropping weight the way I thought I should. Have been stalled for about 1 month, so I figure I'd give myself a boost. 9 out of 10 I was taking in hidden carbs. So I am really watching what I put in my mouth from this day forward.
Glad to know that there is still life after 50 :p Have a great lowcarb day ladies and I will be back.

Yesterday we went to a restaurant with my grand daughter,,,and alas!! It was all mexican and there was no vegetables on the menu at all,,,just rice and beans and then all the other mexican fare. Well,,,I chose a chimichanga without rice,,,and today I swelled up like a toad!!! Good Morning! Happy to see a group of people close to my age. I am 67 as of Jan.15 this year. I have been on this woe since Mar,17-02 when I started I was 260 lbs so there has been a good but slow loss with many stalls one that lasted 8 weeks no lbs no inches lost I nearly gave up at that time . Before I found Atkins I tried WW and Nutrisystem + eating lowfat have 20 cookbooks all about low fat cooking. They are all going to a Thriftstore. Now my BP has gotten much better, I sleep better and stopped taking my arthritys medication. My skin looks and feels so much better must be all the water I drink :) My friends and children tell me I look so much younger than my age. Makes me feel good. Hugs to all of you  Lynn

Hi everyone,,,great to see all of you here!!! Its a real encouragement to know that there are others dealing with the same frustrations about the slow metabolism.
Well,,I turned 56 today,, ,,,and no cake or ice cream,,,actually, nothing special. My hubby celebrated by getting me a new printer/scanner for the computer,,,,I was excited about that.
I have been retaining water badly ,,,my legs and ankles are swollen and painful so I have started eating mostly protein for a day or two to see if it gets it moving. Cant figure it out........ :( .
I dont weigh anymore,,,its too discouraging. I havent been to the spa either,,,the weather here has been blizzardy,,only now beginning to warm up. Everything has finally melted, so maybe I can get there now, hate to pay for something I dont use!
We are looking for a house,,our septic here is bad and the well water is undrinkable,,,and I have a thing about drinking water from a plastic jug,,hafta mke myself, so I dont drink much at all. Thats probably why my ankles swelled. That and the cheat at the mexican restaurant. Cheats are just not worth it!!!!
Well, today I have had a total of 11 carbs,,,,,maybe I should go eat something before i go to bed. :D
Have a great day,,,,cya lighter!

I am 50 and losing at a snails pace too, it's nice to find this thread for us in our "Golden Years". :D
I have been a yo-yo dieter all my life and that probably has not helped my metabolism any. I was a size 20 in 1996. I dieted (starved) from 220+ to 145lbs. in about 9 months doing very low fat/low cal. I was hungry all the time, had bowel problems, headache and just didn't feel good. I am large framed so that weight loss looked pretty gauntly and nasty. My pharmacy customers all asked me if I was ill. Yes it was nice wearing a size 6/8 but with bones and lose gray ashen colored skin everywhere it was not a healthy look.
I am now a size 12 or even a 10 depending on the pants, more muscular and toned then ever before and am striving to get rid of just a little more fat, particularly in my a$$. That has always been a problem area, it's genetics.
Since starting LC in Aug. '02 I have lost 5, gained 6 and now lost 7. I am walking on the treadmill atleast 5 days a week. I started out just walking 2 miles but I am up to 4 miles a day and find that this much effort works better for me in losing.
I did BFL for two challenges but never completed either challenge. Whenever I got to the 10th week the scale would be up atleast 6 lbs. and it would freak me out. Later I found out it is not fat gain just muscle and fluid but because I have let the damn scale brainwash me I couldn't put up with the gain and stopped lifting so heavy.
It's nice to know that I am not alone with the very slow weight loss. I shall visit this thread often. I love the support and friendship on this forum and look forward to my LC journey with the "Seniors" :D here.

Welcome Herb......sounds like you are really doing well with the exercising,,,that is my weak spot,,,and the water. However, today I decided to break those habits....
I have had 3 44 ounce glasses of water today, and only two diet pops,,,,,,,that is a record for me I think!! I am a diet pepsi addict,,,,for sure! :( But I found myself holding fluid badly and today with all the water,,and the carb cut back,,,,i have been in the potty all day!! A lot of the bloat has gone too...so I gotta make this a habit!
I am determined to tackle the exercise thing too,,,,I joined ladies only a month ago,,,have only been once,,,because I am afraid to go by myself!! But in the morning,,,I AM GOING!! I am gonna have the trainer take me around and give me my workout plan,,,,gonna get things moving!! I want to look good for Easter!
I have fooled around long enough,,,time to get on the ball,,,,if I am gonna be really committed to losing this weight,,I gotta do it all!! Tomorrow I will tell ya about my experience at the spa! ;)
And I gotta start taking my supplements again too,,,,,I just got depressed and lazy about it all,,,and its time to shake myself. SO,,,from here on in,,,its gung ho all the way!
Here I was being thankful that even though I am over 55 there were some perks to it,,and a friend told me today that some businesses are raisiing the discount age to 62!! Ohwell,,,,,
Have a great day all!!!

So I am getting started at least. I got a book online called Banish Belly Butt and Thighs and there is a website that goes with the workout,,,pretty interesting.
Put a roast in the crockpot for supper,,,so didnt have to cook when i got home from work.
May be moving to the same neighborhood that both my daughters live in,,,if so,,we can walk together in the evenings this summer!!And its close to the park where the track is,,,,,hmmmmmm...I may get into this exercise thing after all!!! :D

Not everybody likes to exercise. I love to walk and with having a treadmill at home it makes it that much easier to do. I call it "my quite time".
Banish Belly Butt and Thighs, that sounds interesting!
I bought some firm tapes a few weeks ago, I have only tried them a few times but really need to use them more frequently.
I have free weights and use them often, my underarm flap isn't nearly as bad as it use to be. I will be wearing tank tops and sleeveless blouses this summer with confidence.
Keeping our muscles toned is very important in our "mature" years. Good to prevent flabby skin and because it makes the bones thicker and stronger.
That will be great when you move into your daughters neighborhood, having a work out buddy is awesome!!
Take care,

Yup, I'm an "oldie but goodie" too, I hit 56 last December. The LC WOL started 1-30-03 for me, I've lost 24 #, I feel like I stalled cuz the darn scale isn't moving like I think it should, BUT, my clothes are fitting so much better! Well,,,here it is saturday and I didnt make it again!! We had to be at work at 7 this morning,,,and I didnt get to bed till after 1,,,so I am pretty tired...just got on here to check in .
About that "hangy down part" of the upper arm,,,that flap,,,what is a good exercise to do,,and how heavy a weight should I use?
The way it is now,,I could hurt somebody with the backlash!!!
Had two ladies at work tell me I am looking great,,,that made me feel good!! Then tonight my son inlaw wanted me to go out to eat with them,,,to a buffet,,,,I ate fish, shrimp, chicken, steak and broccoli with cheese,,,topped it off with strawberreis and whipped cream!! I am proud of myself! :D I still ahvent had any water though,,,2 glasses i think..i need to go get some.
Wow Auntie,,,24 pounds is great!!! Keep up the good work, and dont be impatient! I had an 8 week stall...and I dont even weigh anymore. I decided I dont care what the scale says,,,I am judging by my clothes, QWhen I get inot a smaller size,,,maybe then I willweigh. I keep getting smaller at the top,,,smaller in the shoulders,,and my face looks really thin,,,,,,I cant wait for the hips to catch up!!! :(
Yeah Herb,,,i hear ya about that not everybody likes to exercise stuff, I am one of em!!! I am okay once I get started,,,but its the getting started thats the hard part! :(

I was so glad I did...my little trainer,,her name was jennifer,,,,took me around and showed me how to work all the machines,,what weights to use for what,,and what exercises. I was pooped when I got done,,,but it felt so good!! Anyway..I am proud of myself for conquering that fear!! :D I cant wait to go again,,,,and to see what a difference this makes in the coming weeks.
I have been drinking a lot more water,,,,that is a plus. My skin is so dry,,,its gotta help! I gotta look up my supplements and see what is good for what....if I know why I am taking them,,I may be better about doing it!

So glad you enjoyed your workout. I too have gotten back into a routine with weight training. I was doing BFL for a while but was lifting too heavy and started having problems with rotator cuff and left knee.
I use less weight, more reps for tone, it is much easier on the 'ole body.

Well,,its been three weeks,,,and no postings, Iguess all the seniors have gone elsewhere!!! :(
As for me,,, I am still on the bandwagon, although I was off line for awhile due to moving and having my computer rebuilt, ...
I have found that this has become second nature to me now,,,I automatically reach for the low carb treat as opposed to the other. I have been on this since June,,,almost a year. I dont know how much I have lost, cause I stopped weighing and just use my clothes as measurement. I have lost a lot of inches. GOing shopping for a new Easter outfit this week,,,can hardly wait to see what size! I know I am aan 18 at the top,,,,thats down from a 26 so I sure wont complain!!!
We have been eatoing out so much,,,that I have not lost a lot recently,,,but have determined to start cooking more now that things have settled down for us. Gonna get on here and look up some recipes,

Hello!
I did write once before and I am wondering where everyone is? I am in a stall again nothing lost. It finally got warm where I am and now it is shorts weather again. I said last year that this year I will not cover up my fat arms with jackets or other blouses I will wear a sleeveless blouse I am still fat but I will not suffer. :p Music mama I love your signature because that is how I feel. With prayer and Gods help I can make it through to the land of thin people.I took a walk today and now my feet and back hurt but I am trying. I have problems with both. I guess every little bit helps.
I love cooking and trying out different foods and it shows :daze: The best help has been cauliflower and turnips, they take a good place of potatoes. I also make Nana balls that helps my sweet tooth. Muffins are great also . ok here I go with food  again
Well wish I would have a buddy here. Do I?
Everyone have a Blessed Easter.

Hello  ,
I am an eternal 59 lady. ;)
This is the first time in my life that I have done LC. Spent much money and time at WW on lowfat/fatfree/sugarfree/highcarb to no avail. 2 years of losing and gaining. My dr. has approved of my doing Atkins. I have lost 12.5 lbs. in the first week of induction. Am in my second week and it is slowing down, but, hey, I never in my life lost that much. I am sure this is the way I will eat for the rest of my life.
Glad to hear from so many of you, keep posting. :rose:

Hello Cloe. This thread looks like it is dying. Too bad not more Seniors are posting I am sure there is more who have found this site. It would be interesting to read about the struggles we as older people have of losing. I have been on this for over a year and first I lost really good then started the stalls. Even gained some back last fall, that is when everyone has a birthday in my family and parties every week with good food and cakes and Thanksgiving and then Christmas right after. Fall is full of temptations for me. I should take a long trip at that time maybe somewhere south where I could be warm. Oh well I'll be back in a couple of days to see if there is anyone writing here. Hugs to all. Lynn

Hey!!!! What a surprise,,,,,I finally found some time to get on ,,,and there you all were!!! :D
I have been so busy moving,,working and directing the Easter Drama at church, that I havent had time to post! The last couple of times I checked tho,,no one else was posting either, glad to see some interest.
I have been LC'ing since June,,and had lost 40 poundswhen I stopped weighing a couple of minths ago. I decided that the number on the scale doesnt really matter, as long as I am seeing the inches come off.
Ihad a funny experience tonight,,,it was the second night of our drama presentation, and we had a large crowd. A man I have lnown for years and had not seen for awhile,,told me my neck looked little!!!! :( I have never had that kind of complement before!! Oh well,,I will take anything! There were several that commented on my weight loss,,so it is still working.
I have been so busy that I havent had time to really cook, or even eat a meal lately,,,,but come Monday I am going back on induction for two weeks,,,,just to kickstart things.
Dont get discouraged if your weight loss slows down,,,you will do that at our age,,,but keep going,,it will work!!! Trust me!! I have never done a weight loss plan as successful as this one,,,because you are not hungry,,you have energy..and you can EAT!!! I love it...and am determined to keep it up for good.
Like you,,I spent money at Weight Watchers,,,Physicians Weight Loss,,Herbalife..Dexatrim,,,Phen Phen.....Metabolife ( I still take that once in awhile to speed up my metabolism)..but nothing worked long term for me. Weight Watchers had too many choices,,and too many cravings cause I ate the sugar . So,,,I am satisfied with this WOE....it works!!
Well, bedtime here,,,,keep posting!!

 Hi Guys,
I'll be 56 in November.....Hard for me to relate to the term "Seniors" too... :p But, I'm definately a "Baby Boomer", a "60's Child".....Seems like just yesterday I was just out of high school and 115 lbs......Boy, time flies! I first encountered Dr. A in 1973....after I gained 50 lbs with my first son.....lost 60!...Everyone thought I was going to kill myself with this "Diet Fad".......Wish I would have stayed with the WOE from that time on! Didn't have too much problem with weight 'til I hit my 30's and had to go on BP medication......then all "hell" broke loose....gain, gain, gain!..........I too tried all the low-cal, low-fat diets.......they had me convinced too! God bless Dr. A! He knew all along. So, I have returned to what helped me before..... But now...It's so SLOW!.........So frustrating. Age, medication...etc.! Never thought I'd be where I am now (overweight)! But, here I am! This is my 2nd time around in the last year and a half....Stupidly gave up after 5 months of LCing... Lost 15 lbs (off for 4 months)...gained back 20! Back on WOE starting 2/24/2003...have Lost 10...and that's it...stall???? SLOW!...But, I'm trying...And I'll keep trying! Oh, for the days that I could drop 40 lbs in 2 to 3 months! :D Guess I murdered my "Golden Opportunity"...........Well Good luck everyone! KC

Hi Everyone,
Don't know how I missed this thread, I read the boards everyday, many times during the day ;)
My name is Sheryl and I'm 57, live just outside Chicago, and the proud grandma of 2.5 boys, of which I am helping raise one of them. I don't know if the 7yr old is keeping me young or making me old :daze:
Started LCing in July of 02, and it's the best thing I've ever done for myself, lost 42 so far with some slow downs along the way but I have stayed with the plan and find this is something I can live with.
Have a nice Easter everyone, going to DD's house woohoo!

Hi!! Great to see some newcomers to this thread!!! Hope you all had a great Easter.
Well,,,I went to Texas Roadhouse for dinner today,,a friend invited us,,so since it was a holiday I decided to make it my last big cheat for a long time. I havent really been cheating at all,,,but havent been as diligent about writing things down either. So, tomorrow it is back to induction for me for at least a week ,,,,,I wanna jump start this weight loss again. I have been between a 22 and a 20 at the bottom since Christmas,,,,time for a change.
I know what you mean about the weight loss being slow...when I think that it will soon be a year and I have only lost what I have,,it gets frustrating. Then I think about where I was a year ago,,and I realize that I am really making progress.
I havent been drinkiing water,,,I know that is important but I am so bad about that. I do for awhile, then go right back to diet pepsi!
Yes, I remember what it was like the first time I did this WOE too,,,I dropped weight so fast,,22 pounds inthe first month!! Now I struggle to lose 2!!! But I am committed to stick with it,,,,I am gonna reach goal,,someday!! I never will if I quit!
I have had people at work that tell me that my diet isnt healthy,,,I tell them no,,,,obesity isnt healthy!! I just figure they ahvent researched the diet, and are going on what they ahve heard.....consider the source and go on.
Well,,time for bed,,,gota check in on another thread or two,...keep posting!!!

DH & I just put in our veg garden yesterday, trying some eggplant for 1st time, tomatoes, cucs and peppers, we just have a small space in our postage stamp size yard. For his birthday I got him a Mr. Squeezo so we can make tomato sauce to freeze or can, never tried any canning.
Well got to plant my flowers, spring has sprung hooray :D

Good Morning Everybody,
I just turned 65 and have been on Atkins since January 02. Right now getting a little discouraged and wondering if I should try something else. I had lost about 30 lbs in the first 6 months and then just stopped losing.
I joined Curves last September and have lost about 10 inches total, but no pounds. I go to Curves at least 3 times a week and feel much stronger, just not losing. I lose inches in one spot and gain inches in another. very confusing.
Maybe we can get this thread moving again and get ideas from some succesfull seniors. I do have a thyroid problem, but it seems to be taken care of by synthroid.
The other meds I am on are zestral and sometime celebrex for joint pain.
With the nice weather finally coming to Wisconsin, I am walking more. I still work full time also.
I would appreciate any advise from others. I really stick to my diet and eat about 75% fat and 20-30 carbs a day. I even dropped down to induction again, but no help there at all.

Hi Bev:
I too just turned 65 in March of this year. I too am on Prempro, take blood pressure medicine and celebrex. I also have lost about 28 pounds since January and lost a lot of inches. I also exercise on my treadmill 5X a week for 30 minutes per day. I am losing slowly but I am still losing. I try and keep my carbs to 20 or under. I took the liberty to look at your fitday when you posted back in February and you were taking in 40 or more carbs. I see you are not recording your food anymore at fitday. IMHO you need to count your carbs and use Fitday or you will not know how many carbs you are taking in and I do believe it does matter. Everyone has a CCL (critical carb level) and if you are not losing you must be surpassing your CCL. I do hope this info helps you.

I always have enough fiber to bring the carb count down. I'm usually lucky if I get 20-25 grams of carbs. Both my husband and I eat low carb, so very easy to stay in guidelines.
I just got discouraged punching in all my food into fitday and never losing.

Just found this thread and have enjoyed reading all your posts.
I will be 59 in July. Started Atkins in April. Haven't lost anything for 2 weeks, but try not to get concerned. I remind myself that it took 30 years to put the weight on and it won't come off quickly. The weight I have lost so far is what I put on in the last year. I'm at a weight now where I was for years so it will take a while for that to start coming off. I have not "dieted" in years because I got tired of the "yo-yo."
This is probably strange to say but I am on this WOE because of Dr. Atkins death. My daughter mentioned his death to me and said she had been watching the infomercials and was thinking of doing Atkins. It so happened I had one of his old books. She started reading parts to me and I was shocked that he described my health situation and my carb addiction. I knew that this is what I should do. So DD and I are both on it. I gave a copy of Atkins book to DS and DDL and they started Atkins this week. I did not push them, just gave them the book and let them decide.
Another one of the things that convinced me that this WOL is the right one was Atkins description of the history of eating. People survived (without obesity) for 1000's of years on meat, vegetables, fruit, and a few grains. It has only been in the last couple of year, since refined carbs, that obesity has become a problem. I firmly believe that this is the way God intended us to eat. It is healthy!!!
I know that I feel 10 years younger. I can do more physical work in day now than I could in a week before. I can't imagine going back to eating high carbs and feeling tired, weak, short of breath, and aches and pains.
I'm sure that later I will have times of discouragement. This board has already given me a lot of encouragement. It is so nice to know that you are not alone.
Let's all hang in there and keep keepin' on! Let's remember how much healthier we all are and not obsess on the speed of the weight loss.
Later, Barb

Just found this thread and have been sitting here for a long time to read through it!
To start with I wanted to add myself here as it is interesting reading, but I noticed not one entry says that people are taking Atkins #3. I started taking it after I stalled after a 30 lb. weight loss. I have dropped 10 more lbs. and truly feel taking 3 X day has been a big help. So, maybe some of you will find this helpful! I hope so.
Well I am 60 years old. Started low carbing in Nov. Feel better than ever, and am SO glad to not always be thinking about food!!
I gained all my extra weight as follows: Quit cigarette smoking in 1985, that put 20 lbs. on in no time. Each year my weight kept creeping up since. There seemed to be no end to it. Then one day I stepped on the scale, (which I hadn't done much), and my eyeballs almost fell out of my head......I couldn't believe what I saw!! And I mean I was SHOCKED!! It was a real reality check for me!
Well I had even spent a winter as a vegetarian and no weight loss, but I love fruits & veggies, so the eating was good tho..lol. So at this point I figured I better do something different, totally than I had ever done. So here I am today and it is the best thing I have ever done for myself!! I feel so much better, look better, and the BIG reward was I no longer am on BP meds. Ta Daa!!
Spent a lot of time sitting at puter here , have to get off now, but will check back soon.

Hello everyone!!
It has been a long time since I posted, and I will tell you why. I hit a long plateau,,and read in the book where Doc says to do a different plan for a few days. Well,,I just spent a month on Weight Watchers.......let me tell you my expereince!
The first week I lost about 6 pounds....but then the cravings set in!! I couldnt say no to anything,,,,,,ice cream (even tho it was low fat), cereal was a real downfall,,,bananas....bread.....potatoes. Then came the hunger,,,I was hungry all the time,,,and nothing satisfied!! I would watch my husband eat a big steak,,and there I was with 5 ounces and trying to count points,,(I got 28 a day,,and the steak is ten!!) Then an interesting development.,..I started holding water,,,,my feet and ankles swelled,,,and I remembered,,,if you are a TRUE carb addict,,,that happens with carb overload!! Then we went out to eat with a couple we have known for years,,I noticed they had lost weight and asked them what they were doing, They said "Atkins" and told me that I had been their inspiration with the almost 50 pounds I had lost in a year!!! Wow!! I felt like that was the moment of truth!! So, last night, when my DH came home,,,I said,,okay heres the plan,,,lets go eat chinese because in the morning its Atkins for life!!! He just grinned at me,,he knew I would eventually come back!! So,,this morning I had a couple small pieces of Muenster cheese,,,,, I am never hungry in the morrning,,,,,,and we will see what happens this week. Anyway,,,,the prodigal has returned!!!! :D Glad to see the thread still going!! I am excited and motivated all over again!! My daughter Jackie is doing it and has lost 16 pounds in three weeks,,,so I have another buddy besides my online ones.
I cant wait to see how I do this time...... ;)

I'm sure you will do great.....just as you have loosing the 50 lbs. before!! I agree that carbs certainly add to fluid retainment. I take RX of diuretics, and even they don't work if the carb count is high......yikes!!, huh!! Another nice thing is that that constant hunger from the other diet you tried will be gone. Never need to be hungry on Atkins, if you are you just eat.
Well good luck!

Thanks for the encouraging words, edie.......
Well,,one day past an down 2 pounds of the water weight...I know it will be more in the morning,,cause I have been drinking water and pottying all day!! But thats okay!! :D
I already feel better,,,,and not hungry> i think that was the worst part,,,,,craving!!! Its not worth it!!
I have decided that I am gonna take one day a week and eat,,,in moderation,,cabs,,,,my friends and daughter are doing that and they say it keeps you from going into a stall,,,,,,we shall see. I am drinking lemon in my water too,,,figure thats better than all the diet pop.
Welllll.... be back tomorrow with a good report!!

Hello Musicmama,
My goodness, I read and re-read your post over and over.
I am so happy to know that I wasn't the only one that didn't do well at WW. I was on their program for over a year. The first week I lost 11 lbs. Then the next few weeks were ok, but then hunger and cravings would set in.
Like you, I couldn't control cereal, low fat ice cream or low fat anything else. So I stuck around losing and gaining the same 50 lbs for almost a year.
Then I took that carb addiction test at the Atkins site. I was truly a carb/sugar addict. Tomorrow is 8 weeks on Induction. I am down 20 lbs. and the cravings are almost gone or at least controllable. I don't get hungry 20 mins. after a meal. And I don't have to take fluid pills anymore. My lipid profile after only 8 weeks was sooo good, that my dr. thought it unbelievable.
I am 59, am hypothyroid (take natural Armour), have fibro and arthritis. And I can lose weight!!! I can't wait to start swimming to see how much more excercise will help.
I was wondering where the oldies, but goodies, posted. Glad to have found you all. :rose: :rose: :rose:

Thanks, RB...I will do that!
As a matter of fact,,,,,and to be honest,,,I had posted about the stall I was going through,,,and got several replies...like cutting down on pop,,,drinking more water,,,,,,cutting back on dairy...but I thought,,oh,,,those things arent what is causing this stall,,,that doesnt apply to me,,,,,,,welllllll.....I really think I just didnt want to give up the stuff I enjoy,,and I hate water!! :(
However,,,,today I have had about 90 ounces,,,and plan on keeping to that much at least every day....I got up this morning,,,down 2 more pounds!!! Got to change my stats for the first time in a long time!!! :D
Also noticed more energy again,,,and my aches and pains are better...wasnt hungry,,,,,it feels so good to be back!!!
I am gonna look up some good recipes so I dont get in a rut eating the same stuff. My DH went grocery shopping tonight and bought me plenty of protein,,veggies,,cheese and water. He is so supportive of me.
I am going back to fitday too,,,,thanks for the reminder!!
Cya tomorrow with another good report!!!

I like your signature line. That's what keeps me going. Your experience going off LC helps remind me why I'm doing this WOE.
I feel so good on this WOE but the cravings have come back this week. I had a couple of days that I ate all legal foods, just ate way too much. Carbs and calories were way up but luckily had no gain. I feel like I have been in a stall, having lost 21 lbs on induction, and only 4 lbs since then. But I guess 4 lbs in 4 weeks is good.
I have a friend who started Atkins 2 weeks after me and she has not lost anything. I can find nothing wrong with what she's eating but no loss of either pounds or inches. It's a mystery. I don't think she is in ketosis either. Is it possible to eat LC under 20 carbs and not be in ketosis??? Anybody know?
So I guess I should count my blessings. I'm playing Canasta tonight with some friends who are in their 80s and needed another player. They always have a delicious carby lunch and always try to push it on me but I take my celery and cream cheese or nuts and just ignore their desserts. They think my WOE is unhealthy but they do admit that I'm looking good!!!
Onward and DOWNWARD!

Hi SD......oh can I relate to the friends who think your WOE is unhealthy!! I have three friends at work who feel the same about the three of us that are LC'ing. They check everyday to see what we are eating,,,and mention again how unhealthy it is,,,,all that fat!!! They eat their lo w fat and lo cal stuff...but ya know what,,,,they still look the same!! Meanwhile the rest of us are looking thinner all the time!! :D
I am losing inches again. I havent weighed in the last few days,,,but last night at church a couple friends told me how skinny I was looking. One even said I made her sick!! :( I told her she ought to try it.
I have really been drinking the water too,,,,I have visited the bathroom more in the last week than i have in a long time. Made it a point when we go out to drink water with lemon,,,,and last night the waiter filled my glass six times!! hehe
There is a gospel singer (I work in the music department of a large Christian Bookstore, thats how i know this) named Vickie Winans,,,who has always been a large woman. Well, her new cd came out and she is tiny!! I read the article on her in a magazine,,,she said she did Atkins and lost 75 pounds!! Said she did it once and lost 30,,then did it again and lost 30 more,,,then again and lost the rest!! I was tickled to learn that she LC'd!! Another singer,,Karen Clark was large also,,and she had the bypass surgery to lose weight...she almost died. But she has lost a lot now. Someone told me it takes more discipline after that surgery than it did before because you can only eat a few ounces at a time,or its dangerous, I thank God for the Atkins plan!!! I feel like it is a life saver!!
Well,,,,its off to bed,,,looking forward to another LC day tomorrow. Have a great Sunday!!!

Guess what? The scale was down another 2# this morning! That is after a bad day. Was craving food all day yesterday and give in. Ate all legal foods but too much. Net carbs were 30 but calories over 2300. My last 2# loss followed a bad day so maybe I am finding a pattern here. I've heard others talk about a 'refeeding' day. Maybe this stimulates my metabolism.
MusicMamma...
You work in a Christian book store. How terrific! That would be a dream job for me. I devour Christian books. I lead a Bible study that meets at a Christian book store and I never come home empty handed! I have enough reading material for the next year. Just need more time!!
Today I have vowed to be very strict with my eating and to EXERCISE. I really need the exercise. I spend so much time in my office just sitting. Think I'll drive out to the State Park this afternoon and walk the hills.
Just one day at a time,

Yes,,the bookstore is great, I have been there for ten years,,and they let us bring home books and read em,,,especially me as I am a fast reader,,a book in an evening usually. I have read all the Left Behind books,, have you read any Dee Henderson??? She is our tope seller .....great fiction!!! Now I am into sewing so I havent been taking the time to read. I am really into music,,,I was the music dept manager for 6 years,,then left, but missed it so much I went back as the asst. I get a lot of free music that way!!! :D I have met all the artists personally several times,,,that was fun.
I have been really drinking the water!!I have a 44 oz jug and I just keep filling it! Not even intersted in the pop, at least right now. Wanna get this weight moving!!! ;)
I am gonna go check out some recipes.....will check in later.

What are your favorite recipes? I've collected quite a few from this site and others but haven't made many of them yet. I don't take the time to prepare and I have to cook 'normal' meals for DH. I'm a last minute cook. Just make sure I take meat from freezer for the next day.
Not really into fiction. Too much good nonfiction to read and learn from. I always head for the Christian Living or Bible study sections. I've always loved Southern Gospel, but we have a young pastor who is giving me an appreciation for contemporary music. Do you have a favorite artist? The Gaither Homecoming is coming to SD in October and I'm excited! We don't get many Christian artists here.
Keep the faith,

I am just likeyouwhen it comes to cooking!!! Drag the meat out of the freezer in time for the next meal!! :D I am really gonna start with the recipes though,,,gonna look up some and try em.
I read a lot od non fiction too,,,,my favorite is anything by Max Lucado!! He is awesome. I also like stuff by Jim Cymbala, and I read a lot of biographies. T D Jakes is good too.
It is so hard to pick a favorie artist,,,,,,,,my ALL TIME favorite is Russ Taff of the Gaither Vocal Band,..I have loved him for years....and David Phelps too. I gotta tell ya how I met Bill Gaither,,,,I went to the Quartet Convention,,the record company sent us VIP passes and hotel accomodations because I work in the Industry. Well,, we parked our car and got out,,and my husband starts talking to this guy wearing sunglasses and carrying some clothes over his shoulder..He asked where we were from and I told him I was the music buyer for the largest Christian Bookstore in Indianapolis....I said,,,you look so familiar,,,what is your name,,,,He said Bill Gaither!!!  I was so embarrassed!! He let me get a picture taken with him,,,so I could prove that story to my boss when I got home.
As for the WOE...I am doing great,,,,,LOTS of water, and i think it is starting to pay off,,,my clothes are really looser!! I am trying to eat more pure protein too,,,,,bacon today,,some cheese,,salad,,,celery andpeanut butter....cream cheese.
I am going to weigh in the morning,,,can t wait to see if there is a loss,,,,,feels like it!!
Cya then!!

Hi traveller,,,,,,,didnt see your post till after I had posted!! Good to hear from ya!! ;)
I know what you mean about the fluctuation of pounds,,,that is all the time with me. I read in another LC book,,to weigh every day and take your average for the week. I just take the lowest and try to remember that every pint of water ya drink weighs a pound,,,plus all the food we eat,,,and if ya havent gone to the potty much the day before, thats probably what it is. Stillmans is a lot like Atkins,,with more restrictions .
Try varying your food,,,eat different stuff. Sometimes that will jolt ypur system into losing. Most of all,,,stay on the plan,,,,,,it will come off, trust me!!
Well,,,gotta go to bed,,,off tomorrow,,hurray!!! :D
Cya then!

Glad you came back. I was beginning to think musicmama and I were the only ones here. I can't help you with KISS or fatflush. I haven't been LCing that long, but if you want to know about Stillmans go to the journal of RCFletcher. He uses Stillmans all the time. Ask him and he will be happy to tell you. I think it is all meat and eggs but not sure. Sometimes our metabolism needs a jolt to wake it up.

Sounds like you're losing inches if not pounds. I think inches are more important anyway. I've worn size 22 for years and all my jeans were getting too baggy. Bought a pair of 18s, wore them twice and now they are baggy!! Have to put them in dryer and try to shrink them.
Loved your story about Bill Gaither. Blame it on the dark glasses!! I'm sure that would happen to me, too.
Keep up the good work! Isn't this a great WOL? I feel so good and have so much energy - more than I've had in years! It's amazing!!

I know what you mean about baggy!!! I was in a size 26 last year at this time,,,,and now I am in an 18 at the top and a loose 22 at the bottom,,,almost a 20. I just gave away all my old clothes,,some were really expensive ones,,,and had a few moments of panic,,,,what if I need em??? :( But that only lasted a moment,,,,I am on my way down for good!! Looking forward to a size 18 by my grandaughters wedding this fall,
Actually, Mark Lowery told me that the Lord had probably sent me to humble Bill Gaither.LOL Wonder if he was kidding??! :D
I am determined to be strict this time. Went to the thrift store today,,Tuesday is senior day..25 percent off...and got the Carbohydrate Addicts Cookbook!! All low carb recipes. Cant wait to try some. If I find something good,,I will pass it on. I got a really cute jacket too,,tried it on,,its an 18 and a perfect fit,,even in the arms, where I tend to have a problem. I was thrilled!!!
I am buying fabric too,,I love to sew, used to do it professionally. I am going to have foot surgery in July so I want plenty to do. Between that and putting all my ol LPs on Cd, and reading, I should enjoy my six weeks off work!! ;)
Well,,,gotta go,,hanging border in my bathroom,,,,,be back later!!!

I've thought the same thing about getting rid of my clothes, but I retired 4 years ago and so my things are getting a little old. Have only bought jeans and tops since then. I like to hit the outlet malls when we travel. My favorites are in Lawrence, KS, along I-80 in Iowa (don't remember the town), and Middlebury, VT. DS lives in Kansas City and DD in Vermont so get there occasionally. Thought I would hit Middlebury this summer but DD is coming here instead.
The only sewing I do anymore is quilting. When I was young and poor I had to sew my clothes. Never was near professional quality though.
I volunteer in the local thrift store so get a lot of things there. Working there gives me first dibs on the good stuff that comes in. Our nearest city is Sioux Falls and need to hit the 2nd hand stores there. Don't want to buy expensive clothes that I will shrink out of.
How could I forget??? I almost forgot to mention that the scale was down another pound this morning. That's 3# in the last week. Amazing considering I'm on thyroid meds.
All the LC cookbooks I've found are more gourmet style foods and I'm a plain cook. DH grew up on a farm and is a 'meat and potatoes' man. I do make a few fancier things like Eggs Benedict which I can have minus the muffin.
Well, I've rambled long enough!

Hello hello,,,,finally back again. I have had a busy week,,,,,,,,
I havent lost any more,,,so I have decided to give myself a challenge.....since I seem addicted to diet pepsi,,with aspartame...I am going to do without it this week, :( ,,,and see what happens. If I just HAVE to have pop..I will drink Diet rite,,,,it has no aspartame, no sodium, and no caffeine,,(what DOES it have in it???) Also,,,and heres the hard part...I am giving up sweetener too.. I have a hunch these are the things that are slowing me down. That and lack of exercise. I am going to start walking the dog whenever I come home from work,,,,,,(he is a 6 pound yorkie,,,he will probably be 3 pounds after the first week....!!) I have got to do something to get this weight moving again. I actually did floor exercises yesterday!! Anyway...I am trying some new approaches. My granddaughters wedding is December 19th,,wanna look good.
Hey SD.....guess who is gonna do a mini concert in our store in July.......Dottie Rambo!! Are you familiar with her?? She is very famous for her songwriting and was popular as a singer in the 70's along with her husband and daughter, we are looking forward to it. She also has a new CD coming out next month too.
Well,,,gotta go get ready for church,,,,cya later!!!

musicmama....
Glad you're back. Been looking for you all week. I know about being busy.
Sure, I know Dottie Rambo! Love her songs. They really touch the heart because she wrote them out of her own experience. Haven't heard of her in years. Didn't know if she was still singing. That will be a great concert! I'll have to look for her CD.
I don't remember if you mentioned before -- how many carbs do you eat a day? I'm pretty well sticking to 20 to 25, but have to admit I haven't been counting this last week. It's getting so I know by what I eat whether I am low enough. And how often do you eat a day? I lose better if I eat at least every 3 or 4 hours. And the days that I have been hungry and eaten up to 35 carbs I always lose the next morning. I don't think sweeteners bother me but then I don't eat many. I'm not a pop drinker. I do miss my fruit juice though. Well, some day.....
Took DH out yesterday for Father's Day. He chose his favorite buffet. Good thing it has a good salad bar because the meat and vegetable selection was pitiful!!! So didn't get much protein yesterday. Will make up for it today. Making Meatza for dinner. It think I got the recipe on this site - either in recipe forum or Karen's recipes. It's pizza using ground meat for the crust.

Here I am,,,so far so good!! I have had two bottles of deit rite today...No caffeine all day and got the headache to prove it,,,,,no sweeteners either. Had 34 ouces of water so far....still drinking though. I came home from work early, (just cause I wanted to) and fixed some bacon and an omelet. Steak for supper,,and some veggies. i try to stay between 20-25 carbs a day. I have been losing so slowly I cant wait to see if this change makes a difference. ;)
I need that recipe,,,,,,,,!!!! That sounds wonderful!! I am a pizza lover and that would make a great supper, Dh might even like it.
Dottie Rambo was out of the music scene due to a back injury. She was bedfast for several years because they did the surgery to put rods in her back,,and they messed up or something. During that time,,her husband Buck divorced her and left her broke, She was living with her daughter Reba and her husband fo a long time. Now she has to sit a lot,,and is very frail. You can see her on the Gaither videos,,,she signed a deal with his music company.
Well,,,better go get supper started,,DH be home soon. Catch ya later this eveing, bye!

The Meatza turned out pretty good. It needs a lot more seasoning though. I added oregano but should have added more stuff. DH ate it and didn't complain. Really it's easier to make than regular pizza - no crust to mess with! I put pepperoni, mushrooms, black olives and red peppers on mine. And mozzarella, of course. I cut it in 16 pieces (made it square as I don't have pizza pan). Haven't figured the nutritional info for my version yet. I will try to find the recipe and give you the link later. It's too long to type in.
I remember the story about Dottie. The last time I saw her on TV years ago she was sitting. I believe her song "We Shall Behold Him" was written when she was bedridden and in terrible pain. It is one of my favorite songs. I've seen a lot of the Gaither videos. They show them on the Christian channel here, but I have never seen Dottie. I'll keep looking.

Sigh...................headache,,big time!!!! I feel like a drug addict going cold turkey. My daughter said I should have tapered off,,,,maybe I need a cup of coffee....but no,,,,dont wanna go there!!
I havent had my 20 carbs today by a long shot!!! Heres my menu...

supper-10 oz surloin
snack-2 oz cream cheese--3 g

66 ounces water so far,,and still drinking
I gotta go get some veggies tomorrow. I had a bag of sala,,but it went bad, and all I had was peas...didnt want that!

I posted the recipe link w/o noticing that you had posted.
Sorry you have a headache. I've given up regular coffee several times in the past and have never had any effects. I just don't like decaf but I'm getting used to it. Sounds like it is almost as bad as carb withdrawal.
You sure don't eat much. Maybe you need to eat more and more often. Maybe your metabolism is shut down. Sure seems like I post about this subject a lot lately, but a lot of people hit a plateau and cut down on carbs and calories. It's self-defeating. Everytime I let my carbs get to 30 or 35 and eat a lot, I lose weight. I just read a discussion about this and someone explained the metabolism very well. She said the metabolism gets used to a certain level of food and becomes resistant to losing. I'm beginning to think that is the reason for Atkins OWL program and upping the carbs every two weeks. I think I'll up mine, but first I have to keep track of exactly how much I'm getting now. I've been sloppy about that.
Get some rest. Tomorrow will be better.

Thanks for the link,,,I will definately make that!!! :D
Usually I eat a lot more,,,,but with this headache just havent felt like it. I am going on induction for a week or so,,,cause I want to clean out my system , you know,,,,the chinese food yesterday (Fathers Day celebration)and the junk I am withdrawing from. Then I am on plan strictly, adding the carbs as we go. I have some new clothes that I can almost wear that have been taunting me in the closet for weeks.
I gotta research splenda again.......do ya think it is okay?? The liquid seems like it would be better cause it doesnt have the fillers in it to make it powdery.
I have decided I am going to the store to get some decaf coffee,,,,maybe I can psych myself out with the smell and taste. I am really craving coffee right now!!! :(
SDgrandma
Tue, Jun-17-03, 16:49
Yes, the liquid Splenda does not have any carbs but we can't get it. Dr. Atkins says Splenda is OK in moderation. Just count the carbs. Splenda should not cause a stall if you don't overdue it. The aspertame in pop though does for some people.
Going back to induction is a good idea. We develop bad habits even low carbing. There was a Back to Basics challenge recently and I think everyone who did it had good results.
I haven't lost anything for a week. I think I'm overeating today. Been hungry and snacking all afternoon - Atkins bar, nuts, cream cheese. Will know when I enter my food tonight. If I have a loss tomorrow it will prove my theory that upping my carbs occasionally helps the metabolism.
Stalls are mysterious. They can be caused by so many things. And everyone is different. A while back I read the website of a woman who was a successful low carber. She said she did not begin to lose steadily until she began taking the right supplements and discovered what foods she was sensitive to. She's an RN so I emailed her and asked how she figured these out. She pointed me in the right direction on supplements, but I haven't been able to find the information on food sensitivity. I've been researching it on the web but so far have only learned that eggs and dairy are most often the problem. To find out you're supposed to go off the food for at least 4 days, then eat it to see what your reaction is. There is a list of symtoms you will have immediately if you are sensitive. Gets very complicated.
Well, need to check on hubby's dinner. CYL

Well,,,the headache has passed,,,it has been almost 48 hours now without caffeine, and the only sweetener was splenda. We had a ladies fellowhip at church that was all Hawaian foods...I only ate canteloupe and a few strawberries......drank water with lemon. So far, so good.
Last night a mysterious bit of energy hit me around midnight,,,i cleaned my kitchen and finally made myself go to bed at 2!!!
I hope this starts working,,,I am a little discouraged today.....maybe I am just tired.
DH bought me a digital camera tonight!! Now I can start taking pictures as I lose!! So far,,we have taken about a half dozen of the dog ,,,just playing with it!!
I need to check up on those supplements too.....not sure what to take.

i got on the scales,,,a 4 pound gain, :( ,,but I think i know why....I really need to potty!!! Not gonna let it get me down.,,,,,I cheated on Sunday,,,it takes a few days to catch up,,,so I will keep on keeping on! :D

Hello again ,
And I think I might be able to point out something to you musicmama.
You are in starvation mode.
Were are your salads and veggies? I looked at your menu and I do not see any???
I see cheese and cream but no veggies no wonder you are constipated.
Atkins is not a starvation diet you are supposed to eat a balanced meal of protein and veggies with lots of water.
Try to have a salad and a few pieces of broccoli or cauliflower.
You do want to lose? I hope you do not get offended by my straight speaking, Please.
I will be looking forward to seeing and Hearing Dottie Rambo again I try to get the Gaithers every time I can.
It has been a busy week for me we have sanded our deck and are now starting to paint it and as soon as we get that finished we'll take off for a holiday in Mi. to meet 3 of my penpals that are coming there to see me. Oh I did lose another lb but I did not change my stats yet if it does not stay :) Have a great weekend and week until we meet again, GBU

No No,,,I would never get offended!! Thanks for the input!! Tonight for supper I had 10 oz of roast beef and a salad,,,,,and ate a half a green pepper. I went to FITDAY and put in my stats and so far I have had 14 carbs, and 2880 calories!!! Most of that was from meat. I am still caffeine free,,and not much sweetener either, just in my coffee in the morning.
I am really trying ,,,it occured to me that my calories had been way too low,,,now I probably overdid that! I have been hungry too,,,cant figure that out,,,maybe it was part of the starvation mode thing. Sigh....................
Welll you would think I would have this all figured out after a year,,,its a year tomorrow!! Oh well,,,,,at least I am still trying!

Hello !
I had to come back today to see if you booted me out. ;) I am very glad you took it like it was meant. We are all here on earth to help, love and support each other. I never could give up my coffee I am mixing it now 1/2 can of reg. 1/2 can decaf all together and I am only drinking one big mug every morning. I have more of a problem with tomato's and strawberries. If I have some at home they somehow disappear into my tummy :D and next day I have a 2 lb gain. I love both of those fruits.
Got the reeling painted today it is a big job, it is lattice and around a 16'x10 foot deck tomorrow we'll do the floor, it got too hot to finish everything today. I wish you both a great weekend.

I think I am making some progress!! Today I had lots of energy,,my skirt was looser, and I was thirsty! Yesteray I had under 20 grams,,probably close to that today too. I had more fat than anything. The hardest part is cutting back on the cheese. I thought it would be the diet pop, but I am handling that fine. I went to a convenient store on the way to work to get a diet rite,,and was tempted to get a diet pepsi because they didnt have any,,,,but I didnt!! It's amazing what a difference eating more meat and vegies makes. I've been sloppy lately. Trying to eat only when really hungry, but then just grabbing what's convenient. I need to plan.
Traveller...I haven't been able to give up my coffee in the morning either. I also mix regular and decaf. When I go out I try to drink decaf except when I get close to Starbucks! But I drink more than 2 cups I'm afraid.
I dropped another pound since I last posted. The loss is slow but seems to be steady. I feel smaller and my clothes fit better but my measurements hadn't changed this morning.
Have to go figure out what we'll have for supper. It's rainy here today so probably can't grill.

I have been pretty busy these last few days..but keeping my carbs low! Still no caffeine unless it was by accident...no aspertame either. I have been really faithful with that..dont want to have to suffer the headache of giving it up all over again!! :D
I have been staying right around the same weight, up a pound or two here and there but that is normal with daily fluid and food intake..printed out a great article from the atkins site on Why the Scale Lies.....it encouraged me.
Found a great recipe for lo carb potatoe salad..you use cauliflower instead of potatoes. Gonna try it.
I have been really tired the last few days..slept 12 hours yesterday!!! That is usually a sign that my potassium is down,,,,I havent been taking any either,,and going to the bathroom a lot!!So I started taking it agian,,with the magnesium.

Hi I'm 56 and am in my second week of induction. I travel and entertain - take people out a lot for my job and I am proud of myself because I really have done Atkins - no alcohol - no sugar- no wheat- and I feel SO much better. I hope the weight will start coming off soon. I feel hopeful and excited about the future. It's been very HOT here and I have been enjoying cold smoked salmon for breakfast and a cold boiled egg. I've given up coffee too! So my goodness. We're in the prime of life and have a lot to look forward too - new friends, new places, new skills. Let's make a list of new physical activities we've always wanted to do.
For me: horsebackriding, ballroom dancing, mountain hiking. I know it won't be long till I'm doing those things. How about you? What new physical activities are you looking forward to? No time like the present for learning something new.

Welcome Dreamdance, love that name !
I have been doing Induction since April 7.
Down 20 lbs. but have been in a stall for too many weeks.
This is my first time doing Atkins and since I have soo much to lose, I thought it would be going a bit faster.
But, I am sticking with LC as it works for me and the cravings are under control.
Started swimming again several weeks ago, so maybe that will help move the lbs. We had such a cold Spring here in Va. Beach that the water took forever to warm up even with a solar blanket on the pool.
I love to dance, grew up in a dancing/piano/musical family. Would love to take ballroom/ballet and tap again. Still have my old tap shoes.
My daughter is a professional ballerina. She is home for a while this summer. She is teaching at various schools.
Any advice from you old timers, no pun intended, as to what I could do to get the lbs. moving again.
Thanks and have a :sunny: weekend.

Traveler...
I'm here. Was away for a while and when I came back everyone was gone. Musicmama hasn't posted anything on the board since June. Been looking for her.
Bet you had a great vacation. I've heard Nova Scotia is beautiful. My daughter lives in Vermont so we get there every few years. Next time we go I want to go to Montreal. Have never been in Canada. Been to Niagara Falls but didn't cross over.
Good job on only gaining a lb. It's hard when you are away from home. You ate PIE? How did you dare? I would be afraid to, thinking I would get sick. Back in th 60's I was on a diet that was very much like Atkins except you could have 2 slices whole wheat bread per day, fruit, and cottage cheese. Absolutely nothing with sugar in it. I lost a lot of weight and after several months and being at my goal I had a Snickers bar when I was out with friends. Boy, did I get sick! And it was so sweet I couldn't eat it all.
I've been somewhat stalled myself. Been bouncing up and down 3 lbs for a couple weeks. I'm trying to be patient. This is my WOL whether I lose weight or not.
Dreamdancer had a great idea. I would love to learn how to ride a horse. Love horses. My kids had ponies when they were little, but I've only had 2 opportunities to get on a horse.
I'm rambling again. CYL

Hi!! Welcome back! I guess we are just al lbusy, eh?
Well,,as for me,, I am back on track,,I decided to reread the book,,,and get brutally honest with myself. I havent been real careful about counting my veggies and my dairy stuff. so I was over in my carbs, thats why I wasnt losing. Now I am back in ketosis and being very careful. Gotta get back into the water thing tho,,,that is the hardest part for me.
Glad youhad a great trip! I messed up last ngiht, but it was for a good cause...tehe.....my frined Jennifer is expecting septuplets,,and last night the Pizza Hut here had a fund raiser for them,,,,a percentage of every sale went to them,,so we had to support em!! And dont even expect me to go to Pizza Hut and not eat Pizza!! Cause thats my favorite kind. But I ame home and started counting again. Maybe it wont have hurt me too much!!

I like the Advantage bars. Eat half a one per day for midafternoon snack. Can't eat a whole one. I think they are very filling. I tried the Carb Solutions bars but didn't like those at all. Just opened the package and could smell the sugar alcohols. About made me sick. Threw them all away. Have been afraid to try any other brand. I like the Atkins shakes, too, but have them very seldom. My friend bought the strawberry but didn't like it so gave it to me. I added fresh strawberries and a little cream. It was yummy.

Mary, glad to have you aboard! We are all here for the same reason. This board has been a great help for me. Just reading about other's experiences lets me know I am not alone. The people who have been LCing for a long time with a very slow loss inspire me. They have such determination and patience. I am trying to learn that - patience. I have not lost for over 2 weeks, but I am not giving up. We have to realize that there will be times when we do not lose, but that we are here for the long haul. I keep reminding myself that I'm eating to live, not living to eat.
You'll do fine if you come to this board for help and support. There are great people here.

I guess I have a vested interest in saying this but here goes: I have always felt that you feel only as old as the age group you identify with--in my case at least, this is the age group that I graduated from college with. I took my time about getting through college--I was 29--then went on to serve a 3-year stint as a "young" officer in the Army, supervising and working beside (due to chronic lack of personnel) the company's motor pool staff--average age 19. I got intimately acquainted with their ways of doing things, talking, music, etc. Add to that the fact that my oldest child was just 3 at the time, and I felt the need (and still do) to keep current with her musical tastes, her moral dilemmas that she had to contend with (as opposed to the piddling ones that I faced growing up), etc., the upshot of all this is that I feel, like a child of the 80's or even the 90's rather than the 60's-70's. At 50, I feel like a fish out of water--I act and dress like I was 35 or so. The graying hair on my sideburns and mustache unfortunately gives me away, although I have been known to minimize it a little from time to time with mascara (cheaper than mustache wax, easier to use, and just as effective!). The point is that because I don't mentally identify myself as 50, I don't feel 50 physically either. Neither should anyone else be expected to. :wiggle: :yay: :nono:

Welcome, Azraelle.
How is 50 supposed to feel? As you just proved everyone feels differently based on life experience and lifestyle. I will be 60 next year, but since starting Atkins, I feel 40. No more fatique, shortness of breath, joint pain, and lack of energy. Isn't Atkins great?
I checked your profile. You have a wide range of interests. You have done really well in 2 months. I know men lose easier, but you may be above average.
I never knew men used mascara for that!
Glad to have you aboard.

Hello all, Can another granma check in here? I started Atkins (should say restarted) yesterday. I did very well on Atkins about 2 years ago, but started listening to all the negatives and went off and tried the typical low fat varieties - WW and ediets. Well, of course I regained all that I had lost and yoyoed the same 10 lbs the last year. When I read all the new reports and then saw that ediets had added Atkins to their program I decided to do it again. So wish me luck and have a great evening all.

Hi'''...I'm 51 and a grandma....55 isn't that far away....I still have the same desires and attitudes that I had at 21..just my body doesn't coorperate...lol....I have lost 37 lbs...had lost 40 but went on vacation...and gained 5 lbs with mom...who is 71...and I really don't see her as an older citizen...she works rings around me....
Went I hit the 200 pound mark a year or so ago, and I just gave in and said "oh well,"....but when I stepped on the scales at 213....I felt so upset...I'm just now admitting that I weighed that much..210 sounded much better than 213..LOL....however, Somehow something clicked and I got on atkins and am so happy that I have...both my hubby and I who were skinny childhood sweethearts, have both lost over 35 lbs since January 17th, 2003...My first goal is 150....then hopefully someday down to at least 130...I'm only 5'3"...
I am also a lupus/fibromyalgia patient, have diabetes, and high blood pressure...but now my triglycerides once 980 is 170'sh and my cholesterol is now 206...a great improvement...I am now also off my diabetes meds...and I feel great and able to work again...at home, but at least my brain is working again...yeah...so...we're not old, till we feel old...have a great week everyone....hugs, trisha from texas

Charlotte and Trisha, so glad to have both of you here. :yay: Nice to have a few more to talk to on this thread.
I keep hovering between 200 and 202. Can't seem to make it past that 200 mark. I probably need to go back to strict induction for a couple of weeks. Then maybe I can figure out if something I'm eating is causing me to stall. I have all my menus from induction (when I lost 21 lbs.) so I could eat exactly the same thing again and see what happens. If I lost I would know that it is something I've been eating or if my body just doesn't want to let go. I'd be happy if I was losing inches but I'm not.
I also have high blood pressure and am hypothyroid. Water retention is a real problem for me. I stopped taking the diuretic because I was doing so good, but then the ankles started swelling again. So back on them. Maybe they are having an effect on my loss (or lack of it!)
I'm just thinking out loud (so to speak) trying to figure things out.
I made fish for supper. Dipped filets in egg and then in mixture of crushed hot & spicy pork rinds and Atkins bake mix. Then fried them. They were absolutely delicious and I'm not a big fish eater.
Well, CYL

SD: My 3 older brothers (1941,1944,1946, respectively) all are in various stages of "decrepitation" from various forms of arthritis (Ankylosing and rheumatoid), and obesity. Acknowledging that it is hereditary, they believe that the severity is attributable to the way they abused their joints playing basketball and football. Having experienced about a 90% remission of severe GERD (with which I have contended for the better part of my life about 2 hours after every meal) since going on Atkins 2 months ago, I have to believe that at least some of their symptoms could be alleviated by trying Atkins for a month. I wish I could convince them of that, but I could more easily convince Bill Clinton to give up sex!! What gave you (and others your age) the impetus to give Atkins a try??
In answer to your comment about mascara, I doubt many men (my age at least) do use it, for that or any other purpose--too afraid of losing their precious manhood, probably. The younger generations (especially the goths) use it for eyebrow enhancement (a heavier brow than God gave them is supposed to attract girls). Figuring on a possible second career in digital graphic design/animation/photography, I figured I needed some knowledge of how shading and highlighting could change the appearance of faces--so I took a stage makeup class my first semester back in college. It was one of the most incredible learning experiences I have ever had, and a lot of fun, as well. I had to learn to let myself go and kick back, something I had never been able to do before. Along with a stint in the armed forces, I'd recommend it as a needed, perspective-changing and eye-opening experience to anyone, especially male! But I digress...sorry.

Azraelle...
I have been overweight since I was a child. I have had a few periods of dieting during my life. When I was 14 my doctor put me on a diet - 900 calories a day. I had to come home at lunchtime and eat a plain wedge of lettuce. I got down to 120, but of course put it back on. I was 150 in high school. With my first child I added 35 lbs. permanently. Another 20 with my second. Those were the days of 'diet pills' (amphetamines). My doctor gave me those and I got down to 135 again. (The last time I was a size 12) In the late 60s I found a diet by a Dr. Moore. It was no sugar, low starch, portion controlled. Lost good again, but then started eating sugar again. Sweets are my problem. I stopped dieting because I knew the yoyo was not good for me. The last time I lost weight was about 10 years ago. The Dr. put me on blood pressure meds and said I was on my way to heart disease. (My dad died at 61 with a massive coronary) It scared me and I started watching the fat and eating more vegies and fruit. I didn't weigh myself then so don't know what I weighed. Since then I went through menopause and got sloppy about watching the fat and gained again. When I started Atkins I was heavier than I had ever been.
When Atkins first book came out in 74, some of my friends did it and lost weight but they didn't stick with it. Then started hearing about it again last year. Found a copy of his old book at a thrift store, bought it and put it on the shelf. When he died, my daughter commented that she was thinking of doing Atkins. I got out the book and she started reading aloud from it. It described me perfectly. I bought a new book. The part where he talks about the history of man's eating convinced me - the fact that man for 1000s of years survived on mostly meat and vegies. I knew that this is the way that God intended for man to eat in the first place. It is only when mankind begins messing with God's creation that we get into trouble. It was also the health benefits that Atkins describes that helped convince me.
I knew that to prevent the yoyo dieting effect, if I when on this diet, it would have to be for life. I was mentally prepared before I started. I know that this is my way of eating for the rest of my life. That attitude has helped prevent temptations to cheat.
The 1st day was fine. The 2nd and 3rd days were awful withdrawal symtoms, and the 4th day I woke up with more energy than I have had in 10 years. I worked outside in my flower beds all morning and wasn't even tired. I could not do that before - would have to rest often. The pain in my knees and hip was gone. I could run up the stairs without getting out of breath. (I took a stress test 2 years ago and could not do the treadmill.) I want to lose weight and not have to buy 'fat lady clothes', but if I don't lose another lb. I will keep eating this way because it is healthier. I am looking forward to my first Dr. checkup in about another month.
I didn't intend to write a book. I do tend to ramble....
I is frustrating when we have relatives and friends that could benefit from Atkins and we can't convince them. But they have to want it themselves. We are a society of instant gratification. And too much of our social life revolves around food.

Another 58 yo grandma here...can I play too?! :)
I read all the pages of this thread this morning and thought about that title...elder? Hmmm.....okay, but it must stand for Enlightened Ladies and Dudes Encouraging the Regiments....or something 'cause an elder is an OLD person...and that ain't me!!! Doesn't sound like it is any of YOU either!
I just joined the site, but have been low carbing for about 7 months now. My health has improved a thousand fold and I am passionate about this WOE. The weight is stubbornly hanging on but that's okay. Patience is the key and I have finally learned that lesson...I think!
I am one of the few who didn't have a weight problem when I was young (I always was a BRAT!)but had a hysterectomy at 28 and oh my Katy bar the door! It starting piling on...first just ounces and then pounds and the last few years I swear it was TONS!! Now I've almost doubled my wedding weight and I'm determined to become HEALTHY again. If I lose weight in the process..great...but I'll settle for feeling good for now.

:yay: Welcome, Miz Steaks!! :yay:
Ohh, I admire your attitude. That's the attitude I strive for but this bouncing just above 200 is driving me crazy. I started in April and lost 21 lbs in 2 weeks, and 9 the third week. 3 lbs a week after that until 3 weeks ago when it came to a halt. So maybe my expectations were a little too high after losing so fast at first. I'm going back on strict induction tomorrow so see if I can jumpstart it again. I've been keeping carbs at 20 to 25, but eating nuts and berries. Only induction foods for the next 2 weeks.
Tell me about your grandchildren. I finally had my first grandchild, Samantha, in Dec. 2001. She is a joy. I was lucky enough to be there when she was born (DS & DIL live in Kansas City). She was 1 hour old when I held her for the first time. It was the most special moment of my life. I get to see her every month or two. She is growing so fast. Going down there next weekend. DD from Vermont will be there, too.
It will be nice visiting with you. CYL

Hi SDgrandma ! I just try to laugh at Life an everything...weird I know, but, by golly, it sort of works!
Aren't those grandkids a thrill? My first one (Donovan) was born 17 years ago and I got to watch it happen. Pam (DD#2) had lots of problems and after 38 hours of labor they did a C-section and Grandma got to watch! Truly was the most awe inspiring moment of my life up til then! She added 2 more boys to the gang and they are now 12 (Jordan)and 14 (Dakota).
DD#1 (Theresa) had the next one in December 1995...our first granddaughter, Kayra. She was followed eleven months later by (Randy) and she ended her family with Ethan in April of 2000.
DS (Tony), and his wife had Lexington in April of 1998 and followed with Phoenix in September of 2000. They will be having more they tell us in hopes of having that elusive son.
I figure 'the more, the merrier'. If the kids can support them, I sure can love them!
Is that 8 of them..or did I miss one or two!! Get them all together and it is a riot of activity. DD#1 and her husband are both deaf, so the whole family is trying to learn sign language and it can be quite dangerous some times with the flashing hands...especially at the table when those hands are holding forks!
That's enough geneology for now! Fill me in on you and your family!
I don't get too impatient on this WOE. I figure it took me 58 years to get into this shape...what's a few more years to get thinner? I have lots of healing to do inside before the weight becomes the focus. It'll happen when it's supposed to.
Be Good To Yourself!

Miz Steaks....What a great family! And I love those names. I can tell your kids inherited your creativity. You must have gotten married young, too, with a 17 yo GS. I was married at 18, had DS the first year, and thought I could be grandma by 40. But DS didn't get married until he was 37! Daughters aren't married yet. DD#1 is 38 and lives a few blocks away. DD#2 is 30 and an RN in Burlington, VT. DD#1 is doing Atkins, too. Her kids are a dog and 5 cats.
BTW, how did your DD come up with the name 'Dakota'? Any ties to North or South Dakota? It's unusual. I bet you have fun family gatherings. I'm so excited about having mine all together this weekend. I can't imagine going thru life without children.
A sense of humor is not weird! It is necessary. People without one have the emotional problems - depression, etc. They take everything too seriously.
Have a great day! :)

Good warm morning SDgrandma! How's the weather in the Dakotas today? We're in for another scorcher here in Oregon. Glad this is the last day of our heat wave...tomorrow back into the 80's.
Dakota's name was because my DD always liked the sound of it during geography class! Our 'Kody' was the first one we had heard of with that name. Now they are all over the place, but most of them are GURLZ! He hates it! Yeah, they are a pretty creative bunch...especially at getting into trouble! LOL!
I got married at 18, had Theresa exactly 9 months later. Sort of grew up with the kids so to speak. Jim was almost 5 years older than me and had just got back from the army when we met. We'll celebrate anniversary number 40 in December! Gosh...that's a scarey thought!
I am so glad you will have your whole family together this weekend! Such fun for you getting to see Samantha (LOVE that name!) We just had a family reunion in Seattle at my brothers' two weeks ago. Mother is almost 80 so we try to ALL get together every couple years or so. Had a good time catching up on all the news.
I'd better get off of here and get my work done while I can still move. This is going to be so addictive I might have to proclaim the office as an 'off-limits' area except for a certain length of time a day!! But oh what fun I am having!! WOOHOO!!
Have a terrific day!

My ex-wife's 6th (and last) child--a son (the first 5 were by me) is named Dakota Pepper. He isn't old enough to resent it yet. He may even decide he likes it! My first 5 had some fairly unusual names as well: Gabrielle Jennefer Yvonne, Zefyr Graeme Pierce, Leif Allyn, Katie Luisa, Raven Jesse Rafael. They all really like them. I, myself, on the other hand, have detested my name for most of my 50 years: Alma Joe. Since both my parents are now gone, mom having checked out on St.Patty's day, I will probably change it to something more palatable, keeping the initials AJ as that is what I have gone by for the last 30 or so years.

Miz Steaks....The weather's been gorgeous the last couple days - in the 70's. Might make the 80's today. Hot as humid as it was last week either. Need to get outside and weed the flower beds. That is, if I can get off this board. I'm alread addicted. But this board has helped me so much. I don't know if I would be where I am today without the support and encouragement here. My DD, who's also doing Atkins, doesn't have a computer and she has a tougher time.
Azraelle....What mother would name her baby boy Alma? No wonder you hate it. Your kids do have unusual names. I don't have that much imagination. We picked Jay David (DH is David), Kristi Marie (my grandmother was Kristina Marie), and Susan Ann (I just like it).
:yay: Scale was down to 198 this morning. Maybe I've broken through that stall finally. I got so many compliments yesterday, but then I was wearing my new 'skinny' jeans - size 16.
Hang in there, everybody! Your patience will be rewarded. :agree:

Barb, WOO HOO! Way to go with getting under that danged ole 200 mark! Proud of you girl! Envy you the weather too! We're still in the upper 80's low 90's here today...and I don't do 'hot' very well at all. :(
Azraelle , we haven't met yet. Mighty pleased to meet you kind Sir!
My uncle was an A.J. and that's what we called him! Stood for Abner James, which he hated. I agree with Barb...your mother must
have had an interesting idea about names to choose a feminine name for a male child! Bet it built some real character in you though, having to deal with society's reaction to it! With my wacked out sense of humor I would have told everybody it was short for ALMIGHTY!
I love your kid's names! I would have named ours something really wacky, but Jim likes the simple, old fashioned ones. Actually, Pam was supposed to be Rebecca Louise when she was born. Jim went elk hunting...I went into labor...had her and she did NOT look like a Becca. I named her Pamela Marie and made it back home before Jim did and it was too late to change it!! LOL!
My Dakota is coming to stay with me this weekend. He loves to cook and we have some recipes he wants to try out. Rest of the family is off on baseball play-offs mid state. I call him 'Kadota' and he calls me 'Gram Cracker'...we have a blast together. He also has been stressed out lately and, when he is, his Tourette's symptoms flare up so he needs some 'de-stressing' here on the mini farm. He has a very mild case and is learning to 'try' to control it, but needs a safety valve sometimes. He's the one I think of when I fall into the pity trap. Makes me realize I'm not the only member of the family with a problem I don't like. Unlike Kadota though, I sure as heck can DO something about mine!!
Off to change the water on the garden. Have a successful low carbing day Gang!

We look alike? That's interesting. They say everyone has a twin somewhere. I doubt the better looking part, though. One of my SD friends on the Dakotans and Friends thread asked me to add one. I HAD to include Sammy. She was 1 yr. old then - at Christmas. Now she's 19 mo. and has really grown.
Scorpiovs...Have a great time on your vacation. Ballooning, though? You're braver than I am. I have a problem with heights. Don't even like flying in a big plane. Nervous wreck until I get back on the ground. Wine train does sound like fun. I love trains - they don't leave the ground. A new grandchild - how exciting! How many do you have?
We went through Chicago once - never again. It took us 4 hours to drive from I90 on the north to I80 on the south. And another 2 hrs. to get to Gary. Traffic was moving at 15 mph if it was moving at all. How does anyone get anywhere in that city? Luckily I brought a whole bag of change for the tolls. And this was on a Saturday. We go to Kansas City a lot and traffic is always lighter there on Saturday. I'm rambling again - and about traffic of all things!! I'll shut up now.

Hi, Gang! Back from my trip to the big city. Had a great time, but ate too much - all legal foods, just too much. I'm always hungrier when I travel. Must be all the good food available that whets my appetite. Never ate until full though. The scale was up 2 lbs this morning.
TxTruker, WELCOME! :yay: Glad to have you here. You are about the same weight as my DS. He started Atkins first week of May at 370. Is now 315. When he was doing Karate a few years ago and was in prime condition, he weighed 225.
It can be hard to stay on track sometimes. We ate out a lot this weekend, so lots of temptations! I get tired of waiters looking at me strangely when I order and not being able to get REAL butter for my vegies, etc. Most waiters are good but some have an Attitude! A lot of people fall off the wagon. The important thing is to get back on. Sticking with this WOE depends a lot on mental attitude. I'm doing this more for health reasons, so my motivation is a little different than a lot of others. It just depends on how badly you want to lose weight, get healthy, or whatever. Are you willing to sacrifice momentary pleasure to reach your goal?? Someone on this board has a quote about the need for instant gratification being a form of immaturity. Wish I could remember the exact quote.
Hang in there and just take one day at a time. Today I will eat good, healthy, fresh foods. (Yea, got some really wonderful, fresh vegies at outdoor market in Kansas City this weekend.)

Low carb shouldn't be the only criteria for making a loaf of bread--if you pay attention to ingredients that have a low AGI (Atkins Glycemic Index), but that otherwise have a fair amount of carbs, such as Oat Flour, Oat Bran, Barley flour, or Rice bran, (and up to 1/2 Cup of Flax Meal with NO NET CARBS), and use a relatively large amount of "vital wheat gluten" flour (~1-1/2 Cups for a 2 lb loaf), you can make, and eat, quite tasty bread that won't appreciably affect your ketosis (as long as you spread your intake out over the entire day), and without spending ~$12.50 per box of Atkins Bread Mix. Adding a couple of eggs and a crushed 500mg Vitamin C tablet helps considerably as well. But why am I telling you this--you're from South Dakota--you already know how to make bread!! (I spent 2 years there when I was 20-21, mostly on several Indian Reservations, and "racially mixed" communities--South Dakota is the "cat's meow" if you can figure out how to make a living there! This was pre-Gateway, by the way.)

You liked SD? I've been trying to get out of here all my life. But then I went and married a local guy who will never leave! The wages aren't high but the cost of living is lower. No state income tax for one thing. We raised 3 children on less than $15,000 a year income and they all went to college, too. Sometimes we 'felt' poor, but my kids don't think they missed anything. We camped and traveled a lot and did almost everything we wanted to do. A big income doesn't make a happly life. We have never had to lock our house or be afraid to let our kids ride their bikes all over town. There are pros and cons to everywhere, I guess. I have always wanted to go south. I hate the winters. I can handle the heat better than the snow and ice. Now I'm getting depressed because summer is almost over and winter is on the way.
BTW, I live in the SE corner - not anywhere near the reservations. It's greener here than west of the river and all farmland.

Can you tell I have bread on my mind too! LOL! Actually I found a recipe that is sort of like sweet bread/muffin/cupcake all rolled into one and it has satisfied the cravings for a bit. It's over in Karen's Corner on the recipe forum in a thread about almond flour. I'd love it if you and Azraelle would try it and let me know what you think of it. I have osteoporosis and lymes disease which prevents me from any heavy exercise regime but I do low aerobics and lite weights to help me along. Anyway--great to see all you gals on line. Hope you all have a great weekend--Aleka---

Welcome Aleka! Glad to meet you and welcome to our group.
Sorry to hear that you are battling osteoporosis and lymes disease. That must be a challenge. The osteo is why I try to make myself do weight bearing excercises. I've heard that it really helps. That and a good diet. Congratulations on your weight loss...that's impressive!
Come over to Chloesue's thread (Looking For Ladies In Their Fiftys) and join us gals who are excercising together. We have a challenge going with a bike ride/walk but we sure could modify our goals to include those who have to excercise more carefully!
Have a great weekend!

Mizstakes---Hi Nancy--Thanks for the welcome--Don't know if I am up for a challenge now--just found I have another fractured vertebrae and need to see the doctor on Monday-- Anyway--am doing o.k. so far. Still happy with my atkins diet and results so far. Thanks for the invite to join the over 50 group. Will be checkin in on you --good luck in your challenge. It looks like you are doing fine on your weight loss too. Hang in there--one day at a time. Aleka

I was just posting on another thread about the rate of % lost. I figured out the % I had lost each month and WOW! was I surprised. I thought I had been losing so slowly. It's just that it's so uneven. This is what I found:
Induction - 19%, Mo. 1 (not including Induc.) - 8%, Mo. 2 - 14%, Mo. 3 - 9%. :yay:
Why do I complain? :doah:
BTW, down another 2# this morning. It was all my activity yesterday and very little snacking that did it.

Barb! That's wonderful! And that is such a good idea to take a 'different' look at the weight loss rate. We all get a little impatient when the real problem is our failure to look at it from all sides. Good for you to point that out to us.

Sun, Aug-03-03, 08:31
Aleka, OWIE! I am so sorry you are having to deal with fractured vertebrae...sounds so painful! My thoughts and prayers are with you! Let us know what the doctor says Monday, okay? And don't worry your head about our excercise challenge...you just concetrate on dealing with your own problems for now. We all understand you'll be with us in your heart.

Hey Aleka! Come on over to the excercise thread even if you can't join the challenge. I found a ride for you! Leidon is gonna hook a sidecar up to her motorcycle and you can ride along with her! (Hope her hubby doesn't mind! :D)
And Barb...come join us too! Congratulations on your weight loss! That's terrific! We have a great bunch of gals over there encouraging each other to move to the best of our ability and we
are having great fun. Wouldn't want you gals to miss out! The weight will drop off faster for all of us if we just keep moving every day.
Azraelle, we need some men over there to keep us ladies in line too! I don't think Chloesue would mind at all even if the thread says 'ladies'.
See you as I excercycle by! Toot Toot!! LOL!

Welcome, Aleka!! I posted my last post so fast that I missed your post. Glad to have you aboard. Sorry about your back. I understand back pain. I suffered with a ruptured disc for 2 years.
Nance...I've looked at the exercise thread and it is a good thread. I just don't want to commit myself to something I know I will fail at. You all are doing great, however. I know that the more exercise I get the better I feel, but that doesn't seem to be enough motivation for me. I just hate mandatory exercise. I've thought about joining the local fitness center. Maybe with someone watching me I won't want to look like a whimp and will do it. I start working with my dumbells and give up after a few minutes. Well, I'm thinking about it.

Hi Val- Welcome to the group--I am 63 too. My doctor finally put me back on thyroid meds and that has helped some with my weight loss, but seems the less weight you have to lose and our age really does slow the process down. But hang in there!!!!! --Thanks for the welcome South Dakota Grandma--Isn't beeing a grandma wonderful??? So much more fun than being a parent and the patience with the little ones is much improved at my age. Ha!! I have trouble motivating myself to exercise and drink water. /Some days water is great--other days want to gag on it. Have you ever tried Greer Childers Body Flex??? I just got it. It is a breathing program along with exercises that you can do sitting down or standing up. Will let you know about it after I have been on it for a few weeks. Hope you all have a great day. Hi everyone!!! I havent been on here in so long,,,its great to see some new names on the board!!
I have been busy,,but really have been fighting the urge to blow it big time!! I have been kinda down about the slow weight loss and playing around with a cheat here and there. But today I decided that must be because I have neglected my best source of inspiration and encouragement,,,YOU ALL!!! So, here I am , back to posting.

Not much else I will be able to do for awhile..So today I am cleaning and bathing the dog, etc.
Just a note,,,I am still off caffeine,,,dont even miss it!! Still off artificial sweetners pretty much,,may use a sweet n low if we go out to eat and there is no other sweetener for my tea.

VALWIS, it's nice to meet you. Welcome to the group! I love that we have people from so many different areas on here. Sort of a global support system for a global problem! Feel free to join us on the exercise challenge thread too!
Barb, instead of calling it 'excercise' why not call it 'kicking up your heels' or something? Excercise sounds like WORK so I prefer to call it something else too. LOL! How about 'come CAVORT' with us? Seriously, please join in if you change your mind. You would always be welcome.
Aleka, how'd the doctor's appointment go today? Hope the news was good news. There's plenty of us there to lift you into Leah's sidecar so come over and join us. You and Barb can cheer us on or something! LOL!
Hope all of you are having a very good low carb day. I am having left over CARB CRAVE from yesterday and having trouble feeling full. Woe is me!

Hello Musicmama--I'm new here and just want to say how jealous I am of the new future grandbaby coming your way. Our youngest is 8 years old and no future plans for anymore grandchildren in sight. Sad--Sad!!!!---Sure hope that your surgery goes well and you are back on the mend soon!!! Will keep you in my prayers too!!! Hello to you Mizsteaks- Well I do have a fracture in my spine with a new curvature in my Thoracic 3 through 6. Fracture is a Thoracic five. Not going to do anything about it. My osteoporosis is getting worse but after reviewing my calcium, Vit. D, and magnesium- said they were fine. I can't take the osteoporosis pills because I have gerd. The nasal spray sets my nerves on edge- So here I am --same as yesterday!!! Ha--What a waste of $80.00. We all could have gone out and had a whing-ding on that!!! Anyway, thanks for your kind thoughts and comments. You sure are the kind of lady I would chose as a friend if you lived in my neighborhood!!! Anyway- Will say good night tonight. Have a great evening to you all- And Hang in there Musicmama--Your in our thoughts. Bye now--Aleka

Aleka, that must be so frustrating for you! And thank you for the kind words. I've met more really great people on this site in the 3 weeks I've been here than I have in the past 30 years! You're going to LOVE it here! It sounds like you have more than your share of health challenges to handle and that must get very old. We will help in any way we can on here. The greatest source of support on the web.
Hope everybody has a great evening and a good low carb day tomorrow. It's too late to worry about the slips from today or last week so just let them go. We'll all succeed with patience. I like the slogan that Karen Barnaby uses on here....

Hi, Everyone! Been so busy this week I haven't had time to post.
Welcome, Val. Glad to have a new gang member! :)
Musicmama...So good to hear from you again. :yay: Been worried about you. Hope your surgery went well. I've only ever had surgery once - had half of thyroid removed last year due to tumor. I admit I was a little scared and didn't sleep well the night before. At least being laid up with foot surgery is a good excuse to get waited on. That's what I enjoyed. DH is not used to me being 'laid up'. And he doesn't cook so if friends hadn't brought in meals he would have starved. But I didn't feel a bit sorry for him. He refuses to learn to take care of himself. Sorry, I'm rambling.....
Was so busy yesterday and neglected drinking my water so was up 1.5 lbs this morning. Home today finally so will drink extra.
Musicmama, you mentioned cheating....I posted this on another thread recently and will share it with you. I say that I have never 'cheated'. Even though I have eaten the croutons on my restaurant salad a couple of times, had 1 choc. chip cookie twice, and had a piece of cheesecake at a buffet in Kansas City. I do not consider these 'cheats'. I just chose to have more carbs that day. It did not start me on a carb binge or seem to have any effects on weight loss. My daughter has had cookies when having coffee with her neighbor and is losing faster than I am. We are supposed to enjoy this way of life, not make it a hardship. We have to learn how to eat for life. One thing to learn is how to eat something high carb occasionally without feeling guilty and starting to binge. Of course, everyone is different but this works for me.
I welcome any comments on what I just said. How do the rest of you feel about it?
MizSteaks

 Barb! Good morning!
I've missed you! Sorry you've been so busy, but hope you got lots done!
I totally agree with your view point, you wise woman! :agree: I cannot see anybody sticking with something for 'life' if that something continually makes them feel guilty or angry or whatever. Stressing out over what you have..or haven't...eaten is just trading one eating disorder for another in my mind. I think we all agree that carb addiction could be seen as a 'disorder'. It certainly isn't 'normal!
I call those slip-ups, whether planned or unplanned, an 'endulgence' and I work around it. I mean...what's the choice? Purging? :Puke: No thanks! I have adopted Karen Barnaby's motto under her signature as something to live by. Progress, Not Perfection! :agree:
Musicmama, hope you're doing okay today. Let us know as soon as you feel like chatting with us, okay? Here's a hug to make it all better. :there:

Hi folks, I just turned 60, been lo carbing since 10/01, yes it'll be 2 years in October, and I lost 40 lbs in the first 6 onths, since then I've lost and gained 5 lbs. But, I'm still trucking, the new clothes still fit, and I gave away the old ones. Anyway, it's nice to meet some fellow lo carbers who have the same problems as I have, I've been hanging out with the youngsters, and I was really happy to read some of your postings. I was just thinking to myself recently, doesn't anyone my age post on the forum. Anyway, I'm real happy to meet all of you. and I'll be back, chris

Thanks so much Nance, I shall definitely stop by there, I've really been trying to get in some exercise, started on a stationary bike, but, unfortunately, it doesn't happen as often as I'd like. chris
Just found this thread -- I turned 59 yesterday, am now officially in my 60th year!
Actually, I find this age absolutely wonderful -- my "baby" (she's 18) left home to go to college, and hubby and I have an empty nest (I raised 6 kids, he raised 2 -- how neat to have privacy and quiet!).
We just bought a lot in Florida (we'll build on it in about 3 years when we retire) -- have lots of fun things planned.
Of course, in Florida I'll be wearing bathing suits and shorts -- more than ever, I need my weight to come down where it belongs.
One of my problems with being "older" focuses on clothing styles -- where does everyone find attractive mature styles? I really don't like my belly showing or my skirts high on my thighs -- but neither am I ready to put on a granny dress and shrink into the background.... I currently wear a size 10 (well, maybe a 12 if it fits through the hips -- ugh) ... I would like to get back into size 6 but I don't want junior teeny bopper styles!
This looks to be an interesting group -- I can relate with problems of others close to my age better than I can to those of young women juggling babies, dating, school....

Bonnie, welcome to our little corner of the world here!
Clothing styles irritate the dickens out of me. It seems there's a conspiracy by the clothing industry to homogenize all of us, regardless of age or size, into a one size fits all...looks UGLY style! I have almost just stopped looking. I live in jeans and tee shirts or long sleeved button up shirts (can't remember what those are called? LOL!) and I get bored with them. We definitely don't want my belly hanging out of one of those cropped tops! YIKLES!
Hope to see you around the site often! We're doing a little 'updating' as it were. We also have an excercise challenge going on at Chloesue's thread..."Looking for ladies over 50". Anything to make us move and make moving fun! Please join in...we'd love to have you! :D

Hi All,
Bev, I went to Curves for 1 month and loved it. My doctor stopped that and now I do the at home Curves exercise and the Leslie Sansone walking tape for seniors. I have degenerative bone disease in the tail bone and lower spine and the machines were doing more damage to me. I follow the Curves carb-sensitive diet. It is so easy and the doctor told me to go on a revised Atkins diet. Well this is it. Keep up the good work.

Welcome, Chris. :yay:
Welcome, Bonnie. :yay:
Welcome, Susan. :yay:
Glad to have new gang members! Seems like more people are finding us since we have our own forum.
Nance, I want you to know I actually did my WATP tape once this week. Been too busy since (at least that's my excuse  ). Going to the fair today so will walk several miles there. Hope I sweat off a couple lbs.!! It's going to be hot and humid.
Our state has a program for prisoners where they learn to build houses. They then sell the houses cheaply to low-income residents. DD is wanting to get one. We can look at one of the houses and talk to the rep at the fair today. Spent 2 days this week helping her get preapproved for a mortgage. She now has a mobile home on a private lot. City zoning won't let her put in another mobile home. This means she will have to move in with us while her house is being put in. This means taking in her dog, 5 cats, bird, and fish. There goes my white furniture and clean carpets!!
Musicmama...waiting for you to check in after surgery. I'm praying for you. Have you ever read any Andrew Murray? He's one of my favorite authors. I particularly like his book 'Abide in Christ'. It brought my relationship with the Lord to a new level. You'll have lots of time to read for a while. Another great book is 'Normal Christian Life' by Watchman Nee.
I found some RS chocolates the other day. I was eating one a day and getting along fine with them. Yesterday afternoon I went 'crazy' and ate about 6. Now I know what everyone means by sugar alcohols causing gas. Boy, did I pay for it later! Anyone want half a box of chocolates? Chocolate is my downfall. I need to stay away from it altogether.
Later, gang! Have a great day!

Hi,
I'm not a senior citizen.... can't get a seniors card at 58, but otherwise I think I qualify to be here..
Been prowling this whole site for a week now... looking for a home...and would you believe I wouldn't even check out the elders lounge til today, didn't want to know about it.... elder.... well maybe elder... but not old.... and I don't lounge... lol... even when I can't move around much, I gotta at least stay active mentally..... only time I shut down is when I'm asleep... even then.... if I am to believe my husband... I don't.
Been reading thru some of the threads here.... like what I read, but can someone please tell me how this place works.... seems to me there is very little difference between the major threads.... just seems like separate conversations between the same friends... not complaining... I like it.... much more relaxed and friendly than most of the other forums I have tried... Just not sure where I should park my hat...
Just a little about me.... 58F, married, 5 kids, 6 grandkids....
did Atkins for a little while back in the 80s... seems easier now.. though not getting the results I did then.... but then I'm not in my 30s anymore either.. lol
Have a couple of medical challenges I got to get out of the way... in particular a CT tomorrow... need badly to exclude the worst scenario, and I may be able to think straight again...
OK... more than you need... I have a tendency to ramble.....
Nice to meet you all...

Hello Pam from Australia! Welcome to our 'evolving' little sub forum. We love having new people join us!
You are the same age as I am and one of the first 'problems' I had was the name of the forum. I didn't feel like an 'elder' so suggested renaming it and we should have a poll to vote on names here in a week or so. We're smart enough at our ages to come up with a name that we are all more comfortable with. :)
How does the forum work? No particular way yet. We're just taking baby steps getting it going. We have one thread that is pretty much devoted to daily excercising and an excercise challenge. That would be Chloesue's thread "Looking for Ladies over Fifty" We love to have you join us there. There are general threads where we are in the process of getting acquainted with each other and there are topic specific threads where we are seeking information about different topics. Whatever makes us comfortable. One of the main reasons for the forum is because we have a harder time losing weight as we age and we needed a place to share, vent, cry, celebrate..whatever strikes us! So kick your shoes off, pick a spot and jump in!
Have a splendid LC day!

Thats okay with me,,,,,Hey Aleka,
Think of a good exercise I can do withut using my feet!! Upper torso maybe?? Something for flabby arms??
I know what you mean about those grandbabies,,,Scorpiovs,,,I cant wait till april when our new one arrives. We are already trying out new names!! Some of em we have come up with are real strange!! LOL
DH has been cooking for me,,mostly Weight Watchers stuff,,,but if thats whats easy for him,,ok..I can live with it for now. I am still counting carbs even on that though.
Go to the doc Tuesday to have the foot checked..anxious to see how its doing. Three more weeks off work at least.
Well,,,gotta go get the foot up,,,,just wanted to check in ,,,thanks for the encouragement !! Catch ya later!!

Only lost 13 lbs. since 7/01 but, overall feeling better. Sure have been thirsty more, lately. Even with taking in about 3/4 gal. a day of water. All-in-all, I couldn't bring myself to start eating alot of carbs again. It's like I'm brainwashed. Even foods I used to love like POTATOES(mmmmm). One small bite and that's it. Don't want anymore. Guess I'll just lay off the Beef for awhile until my Gouty Toe gets better. It's all worth it.

New gang members...how fun!
2puttbob...Your profile doesn't say if you're male, but with your username I'm assuming that you are. You are the first man on this thread. WELCOME! Glad to have a man here. OOOOO, gout! That's painful, I understand. 13 lbs is really good since you only had 30 to lose.
WELCOME, Pam! Everyone seems to find their own niche on the board. I have 3 threads that I follow continually and I like to just search Today's Posts and add my 2 cents in whatever thread interests me. That's a good way to see what's currently happening in every forum. It takes a while to find your way around and find your niche. This board is a great place for information and support. I don't know if I would have stuck to Atkins without it. BTW, I like your signature line. That is so true! You can ramble here anytime. I do!
musicmama...Glad you are doing OK. I sleep all the time on those pain meds. As soon as you can go off them you will perk up and feel normal again. I gave the Praying Wife and Praying Husband books to DS and DIL. They said they were good. There are so many good books and so little time....
Keep up the good work everyone!

Hi Betsy and everyone else here,
Just found your thread and since I am 59 years young I figured I would stop in and say this is a great idea.
I have been LCing since April 2003 and have lost 24 pound to date.
I agree it seems to be much hard to lose not that middle age spread has set in. I still have 62 pounds to go to my set goal. Not in any hurry to get there cause I figure the slower you lose the longer it will stay off. :yay:
My daughter bought a year at the local gym for my birthday and for the past 2 weeks I have been going to the gym 3 days aweek and doing water aerobics 4 days aweek. The water aerobics end at the end of the month and I really belive they are doing more for me then the treadmill and all the machines. Will have to see where there might be an indoor pool that has water aerobics. :wiggle: :yay:

Nancy
Hi All -- I really like this thread, feel like we're a bunch of friends sitting down for a good chat....
Anyway, it's Monday -- Saturday went on the sail plane (glider) -- nowhere near the sensation that I expected, it was simply a quiet, smooth ride, sort of like sitting up high in the air -- guess there were no thermals, so didn't get the swooping and soaring that I was looking for...but now that's one more thing that I've done!
My Monday weight is ALWAYS my worst! Does anyone else experience this? I don't eat incorrectly (always low-carb) but we do eat at different times than normal (last night at about 10PM we ate some low-carb bread straight out of the bread machine -- it smelled awfully good and we wanted to try it -- maybe that was the extra weight?). And I snack more than usual (but the snacks are string cheese, nuts, fresh tomatoes, etc. -- not particularly illegal foods). However, I am also more active on weekends, you'd think that would balance the irregular eating pattern....
And by the way, I weigh myself every morning -- I realize most of you don't agree with this -- but I feel really proud of myself for not weighing several times during a day, particularly when I feel like my weight is going down! Some of us are a bit compulsive-obsessive!!!
Well, another week .... and hopefully another pound down (actually I'd be happy with a 1/2 pound!)....

Hi Everyone..... Thanks for the warm welcome... and the advice about finding my way around here.... getting used to it slowly, finally decided to use my favourites file.... makes it a lot easier to find where I have posted... duh... use it all the time away from here... but got caught up on the "subscriptions" thingy........
Miz... I'm sure I can come up with a better name than Elders Lounge.... but now that I am trying... guess what.... I'm blank...like the ones I am coming up with even less than the one we've got..
Musicmama.... so sorry to hear that you need strong painkillers at the moment... hope you heal quickly and can get off them.... they scramble my brain (as if it isn't scrambled enuf already), but there are times we need them.... I have been told that we heal much quicker when our body doesn't have to deal with pain as well, so its important that you take as many as you need...
2puttbob..... "the book" says that increased uric acid isn't uncommon in the early days... and that you need lots of water.... 3/4 gallon sure sounds plenty, but is this just pure water... you aren't counting diet soda or coffee or tea in this are you? Especially with gout... it has to be simple pure water.... hope it gets better quickly....
SDgrandma - Wow.. you are doing great, you must really believe in what you are doing.... we are all winners... well losers? here... ummm, well you know what I mean... lol
We will succeed....
Nat - Welcome.. I am only very new here.. to both Atkins and this forum, but I believe we are both lucky to have found our way here..

Hello there! Always glad to see newcomers here to join us! It's usually busier than this...guess everybody's having a busy Monday today. I've been having one myself.
Have you found that when you reach our age you need less food to maintain your weight? And it takes more movement to stay agile and limber and all those other 'fit' words? Then how come it is my appetite didn't diminish and my body just doesn't want to move as much as it did when I was younger? Is this some big joke God is playing on us to see if we've learned that virtue called 'patience' He has spent our whole lifetimes teaching us?!! I can just see Him sitting up there chuckling to himself about the lessons in patience we're learning NOW!! LOL! Ahhh...well...I like a challenge. Good thing, huh?! :agree:
I'll be back later today to visit more, but right now I get another lesson in 'patience' with trying to find something for lunch that my 3 year old GS will eat without throwing a tizzy fit! Sigh.
Have a good afternoon!

Hi, all! I'm back for a few minutes. Been gardening and it's hot out there. Had to come in a cool off.
Nancy, WELCOME! A gym membership is a great gift idea. I'll have to start dropping hints...
Bonnie, this is just a group of friends chatting. Back in the 'old days' when my kids were little my group of friends would all get together for coffee almost every afternoon. Our kids were all about the same age. That was a good way to socialize our kids before there was preschool. No one has time for that now it seems. I know I don't. So this is our get-together now days. Computers....how things have changed! Now I'M rambling.....
I do believe in what I am doing. I am convinced that God created our bodies to eat this way. After all, as Atkins says, the diet of early man was meat, vegies, fruit, and whole grains. Our bodies were not made to handle refined, man-made foods.
I was at Walmart this weekend and found those LC frozen entrees. The brand is Chef's Choice, I think. I was in a hurry and didn't read the label well. I read the ingredients list yesterday when I had one and stopped eating it. Ick!!! :p It's full of all kinds of chemicals, lots of salt, and trans fatty acids. Glad I only bought 2. They ended up in the garbage. They were 3.00 each so that was an expensive lesson. I'm always looking for an easy way out not to cook. :nono:
Well, gotta get back outside in the heat. Bye.......

hi barb-i sure remember those days of koffee klatches- all us gal friends sitting around gabbing and all those little tykes running around at our feet, playing, having fun, sometimes screaming and fighting--what fun, couldn't handle it now-lol
yes barb i also weigh every morning record my weight and average it for the week and then compare it to the last week's average. this helps me not to go crazy over the fluctuations that occur (taken from my days on CALP)
I agree with you Barb, about not eating anything but "good" foods -- but my mind set includes grains and fruit as good for you -- and I can't think of those foods as "harmful"....
I haven't knowingly eaten anything with sugar or white flour (well, except pizza a couple times a year) for many years -- I don't crave sugar at all -- but I do love fresh bread! We bought a bread machine several weeks ago, and now we're experimenting with low carb breads -- I like the stuff, maybe because I've not had the "real stuff" in so long
I do crave fruit -- of all types -- I try to keep it to berries and canteloupe, sometimes an apple -- once in a while I eat pineapple and mango -- right now the peaches are sooooooo good!

kust dropped in to read all your posts,,you are all having so much fun getting acquainted, its a fun place to be!! I too remember those afternoon get togethers,,and now that our kids are grown, I email and Instant messenger with some of the same gals,,AND their grown kids!! Isnt technology wonderful!!
Still sleeping alot,,got up at 9 this morning but felt so bad I went back to bed and slept will 3!! My lil yorkie even slept with me,,and he never does that! I think he is worried about mom,,the routine is off!
This was the first day I was alone,,,and nobody called!! Thats okay.. I was asleep most of the day.
DH is cooking steak and veggies for supper,,,all lo carb fare tonight.
I need some advice here folks,,,,,,I am really discouraged with the WOE, or should I say,,,my results.
I started in June of 2002,,,and by januray had lost 53 pounds,,,,according to my scale. I weighed at 247 on June of this year, down from 302. WHen I went to the doctor for my foot surgery,, the scales said 263!!! I hadnt cheated or eaten anything wrong,,,wearing all the same clothes, I have cut out caffeine, aspartame,,most dairy, salty foods...started taking LCarnityne and other supplements. I felt like I was a real failure!! I dont know what to do about it! What else can I do to jump start the weight loss?? I cant exercise for at least 8 more weeks,,,so I am really at a low point here. Any suggestions?? I tried the meat fast,,,,and cant tolerate the fat fast,,,yuk! Even drinking water hasnt made a difference. I am really puzzled!!
Well,,guess I will go take a pill,,,,the foot is throbbing again. Glad I go to the doc tomorrow.
I may check in later,,,,,before bedtime, but who knows when that may be, as late as I slept today!!hehe Cya later!!

musicmama...I notice you haven't posted in your journal since July 15. I know you've been busy. Thought I could take a look at your menus. Maybe you are not eating enough! Do you know what your calories are for the day? I know things are off right now, but before your surgery? I know you were frustrated because you weren't losing. Your menu must need some tweaking somewhere. It could also be that your body is just so used to your eating pattern. Maybe you need to shake it up a little.
One thing--you can't compare two different scales because they will never be the same. The balance scales at the Dr. always weigh heavier than our home spring scales. So just go by yours and forget the Dr. scale.
Don't know if I've been very helpful. It would be easier to evaluate if I knew what you were eating. Just hang in there until all this surgery stuff is over and life is back to normal. Then I would try changing your eating pattern. For example, if you eat 3 meals a day, try eating 5 smaller ones. Or if dinner is your largest meal, make breakfast your largest meal. Eat most of your carbs early in the day if possible.
I should take some of my own advice! I know what I should do, but don't do it. Complete lack of self-discipline!!

I have found it is better to cook and freeze.
For the frist time in years I can see my lap. Major improvement if you know what I mean. I have legs, I really do. Wouldn't of belived it 4 months ago. My rings are too loose for me to wear now, my watch is sliding around my wrist nice and loose. Guess it is that home cooking doing it cause there is no potatoes, bread or sugars. Don't add much salt to my pot either. Try to use things that have natural salt for flavor. Lots of herbs and spices do the trick. Cayenne pepper, white pepper, black pepper mixed together. Add a little paprika, oregano, thym, parsley, garlic powder, onion powder. Mix together add to a steak, chicken, turkey or pork. Love that spicey touch to my steak.
Just a little LCing humor :)

Nancy, I agree that fruit and whole grains are good foods, but after years of abuse to my body, they have to be very limited for a while. I have berries every day, either strawberries or blueberries. They are the only ones I can get fresh. I've used frozen raspberries occasionally but they are higher in sugar so I'm careful. Nothing better than a few strawberries with cream.
I know what you mean about seeing your lap. I have much more lap for my GD to sit on. And I can actually sit on the floor now and play with her. I use all those spices when I cook too. I really have to watch the sodium because of water retention so I use No Salt, if I use any at all. It's a good source of potassium too.
Chris...I should keep track of my food better too. I've gotten so used to what I eat that I stopped counting. I have never used Fitday. I use Lifeform. It's on my computer so I don't have to be online. It's very easy to use and I can keep track of my weight, measurements, exercise, etc. Every once in a while I enter my food for the day and check things out. My calories run about 1600 and carbs between 20 and 30. I found when I entered everything every day that I bcame obsessive about food. I don't want to be obsessive. Maybe that's why I'm not losing very fast, but I have to be able to live this way and not feel like I am on a 'diet', or I wouldn't stick with it.
Have a great day, everyone! I teach a Bible study this morning and go out for breakfast with a friend, so have to get going. CYL

I find breakfast my biggest challenge.... that is when I miss my toast.. Have eaten toast with tomato and cheese for breakfast for years.... thought it was the tomato I was addicted to....lol...
Cant eat eggs in the morning... and really want something quick and easy, anyone got any suggestions??
I want a lap big enough for my little grandson to sit on comfortably, have really been aware of this lately... lol... I am jealous.... but it is another nice goal to keep me on track... thanks for mentioning it....

I lurk over at your thread once in a while. Looking for motivation to exercise. Right now I'm just trying to be more active and stay away from this desk several hrs a day. That's helping. Most of my work is at my desk. I've been bouncing up and down also. Was down to 196, but then back up to 199 and now been holding at 198 for 3 days. Yes, I weigh every day but I don't get obsessive about it. I like to know what's happening so if I have a big jump I can try to evaluate why.
Just finished grinding some pork. Last week I decided to make my own sausage. I'm so tired of breakfast meat that has too much salt and nitrates. And I have to have meat with my eggs. Well I used a couple of recipes on this board and came up with my own spice mix for it. Well it was way too spicy for me. So today I ground more pork to mix with it to cut down the spiciness. I think it will be edible now. I'll let you know tomorrow.

Hi reowdy,
You can make up things in advanced that you can freeze and just heat in the microwave. I did a search on the web and came up with a zucchini muffin recipe that is wonderful. It made a full dozen muffins. I just toss them in a freezer bag and into the freezer with them. One muffin is 6 grams of carbs. You can take sausage and brown it. Place it in muffin tins, cover with a little cheese,
scramble 6 eggs with a little heavy cream and put in the muffin tins, add a little more cheese and bake until a tooth pick comes out clean. These keep in the fridge really well and can also be frozen. 2 are a serving at about 5 carbs per serving.
Please check out my journal, I use Atkins banana muffin mix to make waffles for breakfast at 3 grams for two waffles.
You will get a lap, I have no doubt about that. If I can do it anyone can. You just have to stick to this like glue.

Have been having major computer problems today which has kept me from checking in here all day! Frustrating to no end because my day usually starts with eating my breakfast while I check in here. :tears:
There's a really good recipe forum on here if you go exploring. Karen Barnaby is head chef over there and will help you fix any fixable recipe you've got. She helped me with one called Tim's Pudding Toast that I use for breakfast often. It's on a thread about almond meal though so you have to look for it. It comes out like a bread product and half the recipe is enough for a meal. Good toasted or as French toast or just hot out of the microwave with butter and sf syrup. I got the recipe from Gwen on another website and will be eternally grateful to her! :)
Hope you're all having a good active day today. I've been out picking pears when I haven't been kicking this computer! One tree down, two to go and I'm out of boxes. Guess that means I have to quit, huh?!! Thanks! You talked me into it!

I got my new Good Housekeeping in the mail,,anybody out there get one?? They have an article on "All the Fad Diets from Atkins to South Beach to the Zone!"" I was so upset when I read it,,,this woman had never had any experience with lo carb and how great it makes you feel,,,how the cravings stop. Her main consensus was that it is all water weight,,and that scientists have proven that the only way to lose weight was to count calories. We all ought to write her and send her our stats!!
Some of your recipes are sounding great, when I get where I can cook again. Gotta stay off the foot and keep it iced another week at least he said.Sigh...gettin cabin fever here!! At least I can stand to be at the computer now,,,at first it hurt to sit here. Gettin better by the day.

Breakfast does NOT have to be bacon/eggs/cereal. It can be any food that you would normally eat for lunch or dinner too. We've been so programmed by the cereal producers to think inside this tiny little box that it is hard to remember that food is just food. It doesn't come with instructions just to be eaten at a certain time of day. I love Karen Barnaby's left over Cauli-flied Rice as a breakfast. Lately I've been on a scrambled egg kick so haven't endulged. Will soon though.
Off I go to do my ironing and finish the laundry. Does it ever get finished?! LOL!

I was raised with breakfast for dinnner. Guess I will always like it for dinner. My Mom, made a potatoe fritatta with ham. Now I just do a take off on the potatoe fritatta without the potatoe. You can steam turnip and slice it in place of the potatoe and just add your ham, onion, mushrooms and so and then scramble your eggs and add your cheese.
I like nothing better then to sit late at night and take a recipe and sorta take it apart and see what I can come up with for Low Carbs. Comes from my days of menu planning for Mom's restruant I guess.

Nat, have you ever made sausage? I've been trying to make breakfast sausage and so far it's awful! I just can't get the seasoning right. Doesn't taste like sausage at all. I used recipes from this board too. I just want an ordinary sausage that tastes like Jimmy Dean's (not the Hot one).
What kind of a restaurant did your mother have? I cooked in restaurants for years. Love the restaurant business, but my legs couldn't take it anymore.

Morning SDGrandma and everyone else,
Mom just ran a Ma and Pa in Pompano Flordia. Open from 7 am to 4 PM daily. No french frys just homemade potatoe salad. When they would ask for FF she would say I don't have a vent for a fryer so I make potatoe salad and if you don't like it it's on the house. Never knew anyone who didn't like Mom's potatoe salad. She also served hash browns or homefried potatoes daily as well.
The sausage. Been thinking on this a minute or two and as for Jimmy Dean he has syrup to some of his sausages. Have you tried adding a little Atkins syrup to the sausage, cause most sausage recipes call for brown sugar. You could replace the brown sugar with sugar twin brown sugar I bet with no problem.
Here is a recipe you can try. I have replaced the brown sugar with sugar twin. When I get home I am going to try it too.
HomeMade Sausage
Ingredients
2 teaspoons dried sage
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon dried marjoram
1 tablespoon sugar twin brown sugar
1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 pinch ground cloves
2 pounds ground pork
Directions
1 In a small, bowl, combine the sage, salt, ground black pepper, marjoram, sugar twin brown sugar, crushed red pepper and cloves. Mix well.
2 Place the pork in a large bowl and add the mixed spices to it. Mix well with your hands and form into patties.
3 Saute the patties in a until cooked.
I think I might cut the sage in half cause I am not a big sage person. Can take it or leave it.
Was just thinking for a leaner sausage you could mix half gound turkey with the pork or jus make a turkey sauages as well. Me I love pork and fixed most anyway. :)

Nat, the Ma and Pa places always have the best food. Not many of them around anymore - just in the small towns around here. I've always thought it would be fun to have an old fashioned diner. My favorite place for breakfast when we travel south is Waffle House. But can't eat grits anymore! I loved their grits!
Thanks for the sausage recipe. Sage and brown suguar is what I was missing. I skipped the sugar thinking I could do without it - maybe not. I have brown Sugar Twin - use it for BBQ sauce. 2 tsp. sage does sound like a lot for 2 lbs meat. I can see I didn't use enough pepper. My recipe also had fennel, yuk! :p
Steaks...I had your pudding for breakfast. It was delicious!! :agree: And very filling. I used the 1/2 flaxmeal and added a few brazil nuts to the almonds. I eat a few brazil nuts every day for selenium (for my thyroid, I think). I should have fiber for the day.

Funnel is used more in the Italian sausage rather then breakfast sausage. My ex-father-in-law made the best Italian sausage I have ever eaten in my life back in the 60's and I use to run the meat through the machine and into the casing on weekends. Was kind of fun to do when I was 19 and the mother of only one child at the time. Some place I have that recipe as well. This man is going to be 89 in January and is coming next month to visit us for a bit. Can't wait cause he speaks broken English till this day. :)

Good morning, gang.
Do you remember Jack LaLaine? I saw him on an infomercial this morning. He's selling juicers now. He's really old but still in great shape! Anyway, year ago I exercised with him one summer when he was on TV here. I lost 15 lbs just exercising and my tummy got flat. Wish he had tapes out because I know his routine worked for me. I remember some of the exercises but not the whole routine.
Been out watering flowers this morning. It was over 100 yesterday and we haven't had rain for weeks. Going to be just as hot again today and no rain in sight.

Barb, I love the Pudding Toast too but be careful of the carb count in it. Half is a serving with almost 6 carbs.
I remember Jack Lalaine too but never excercised with him...just ran around chasing kids in those days.
Nat I am going to try that sausage recipe too. I need to get the sausage stuffer for my Kitchen Aid so I can make cased sausages. I love new techniques like that.
Gotta run...Mom just caught me! LOL! I told her not to let me sign on until I rode my excercise bike! Hahaha! Ouch! She just thumped me on the noggin! :bash: Later gang! *G*

Steaks, I used half almonds and half flaxmeal so it cut the carbs down to 4 net per serving. But even 6 carbs for a meal is not bad.

We are looking forward to pork going on sale so I can make lots and I will be using your recipe! Can't thank you enough! Oh! Hi Nanc - isn't it great we're doing a WOE that allows sausage? About once a month my dad (he's 84) and I make a big batch of sausage - stuff it in casings and smoke it in a Little Chief smoker. I have fond memories of going thru Ridgecrest, on the way to the Sierras or whatever. In those days, used to bring home big loaves of sheepherder bread from the bakeries in Lone Pine or Bishop. Couldn't do that, now, of course. But there are other things, right? Bill

Now did you ever get to The Homestead over on the Hyw 14, one of my favorite places to eat. It is about 14 miles from Ridgecrest. They have the best hot bread as well.. A big no no!!

No, Nanc, never made it to the Homestead. Prob was not there back in the 60s when I was doing my mt/desert explorations. I really think I'm just about over bread now- I like some of the lc stuff, like cauli-flied rice, so much that many meals now I just don't think about starch. Tried Atkins pancake mix once, it was ok, but didn't really do anything that eggs and bacon didn't do. I like the LaTortilla lc tortillas for putting butter, braunschweiger, whatever on. They seem bread-y enough for me. Bye for now. Bill

You sound like me Bill,
I love them La Tortilla LC Tortillas just put in the toaster oven with cheese on it. Then add a slice of smoked turkey to it. That was my breakfast this morning.
Did up some steamed Cauliflower last night and then dipped it in egg and atkins bake mix and fried it for my daughter. She loves it, I only like it when it first comes out of the pan or I won't touch it. Haven't had the Cauliflower as cheat taters or rice as yet. I have used Turnips for french fries. They where pretty good and a nice change. Also made chicken pot pie and added broccolli and cut up turnips to it. Now that I really liked.

Oh I was able to find the recipe on the net over in low carb friends. So here you go and enjoy. The last time I made this I didn't use cream of chicken soup but just a can of chicken broth and heavy cream. Enjoy!!
Recipe Name
Chicken ala King with Biscuit Topping
Posted by Jo Serves: 6
CarbsPerServing: 10.8g
Effort: Easy
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ingredients:
2 cups diced cooked chicken
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
2 tablespoons butter
8 ounces cream cheese -- softened and diced
1 cup cream of mushroom soup, condensed -- no milk
4 ounces sliced mushrooms -- (1 can)
1/4 cup green pepper -- chopped fine
2 ounces pimiento -- drained and chopped
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 package frozen asparagus
Biscuit topping:
3/4 cup Atkins bake mix
3 large eggs
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup heavy cream
How to Prepare:
Heat oven to 400 degrees. Grease 10 x 1 1/2 inch deep pie plate. Cook onion and butter in heavy saucepan. Add cheese and soup, heating slowly, stirring constantly until cheese is melted and smooth. Add chicken, mushrooms, pimentos, asparagus and seasoning. Pour mixture into large Pyrex pie plate. Pour biscuit mixture on top and spread gently but evenly. Bake for 25 minutes until top is golden brown. Six large servings. ENJOY!
Pan will be full and the mixture will rise a bit and bubble while baking. Place foil under pan to minimize oven clean-up.

Since red wines tend to be higher in alcohol than white wines, this has the current Atkins listing to read:
4oz white wine: .9 carbs, 80 calories
4oz red wine: 2 carbs, 85 calories
Once you are past induction, the Atkins system has you move up to higher carbohydrate levels - between 25g and 50g per day based on your own individual body type and needs. During this period (and indeed for the rest of your life, if you want to maintain a healthy weight by following their lifestyle plan), you need to count wine carbohydrates in with all other carbohydrates you ingest in a given day. So what are the carbohydrates in wine?
hope this helps

Hi Nanc - glad to hear about your sausage making. I think you had asked about the crustless quiche? It's the recipe from Fran McCulloch's lowcarb cookbook. And it's pretty good - more eggs and less milk than the ones I used to make. Maybe next time will use half and half instead of heavy cream, the extra carbs might be ok. In my case, the bg meter will let me know if I got away with it. Cheers - Bill

:roll:Hello all,
I'm 62, work full-time (very stressful job, mostly on computer with little exercise), have physical limitations that stop real exercise, even walking is in bits and pieces rather than the 3-mile hikes of my past. To keep up when out with others on a hike or some such, I use hiking sticks. The "sticks" are taller than canes and really give some stability and allow for swinging arms a bit (if no one else is too close).
I'm new to this sub-group, and new to low-carbing. I've been on Atkins Induction since mid-August (almost a month) and lost only 5 pounds, going down 2, up 1, etc. I havn't weighed-in for the past few days on advice from Atkins counselor on the phone. I've also added more salad, upped my carbs to between 15-20 (I started out gung-ho and went to about 8 carbs a day for over 2 weeks). Since upping the carbs, mostly with veggies, my energy level is better.
Anyone out there have to deal with GERD and dieting? What about gluten intolerance?
I find the elimination of all sugar is helpful to my hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Gluten intolerance is annoying, though, because I'd really like to try some of the Atkins biscuits, etc. My old standbys of corn and rice are gone, I really miss the corn tacos! Soy stuff is ok, but I haven't found a cracker or bread or chip that is ok for Induction and also gluten-free.
My GERD has improved overall, but acts up big time from fats, eggs, fried foods, so that's a major conflict with Atkins precepts. I use Titralac for the acid, but have no idea what the carb count is.
I'd love to hear from someone on how handle the health problems that seem to come with being over 60 and also do LC.
I only check in about once a week, Sundays as a rule, when I have the time, between catching up on laundry, kitchen stuff, etc.
Weekday evenings are for catching up on sleep so I can function at work early the next morning! Prioritizing gets more basic as I get older, and now I seem to have eliminated almost everything that is not needed for survival...... and losing weight is about as survivalist as it gets. I have 65 excess pounds to shed, but I'd be happy to see a loss of 20 at this point!
Reading the previous posts, especially from people with similar problems in getting the weight loss going, is very helpful. I feel that I'm in this for the long haul, and can kiss all those sugary and salty snacks pre-LC goodbye forever, but at least I'd like to see some reward for the sacrifice, like a lot more weight off and a lot more energy.

Hi ILM,
I can't relate with your health problems, but in the weight department, I was where you are now about a year ago. One of the things that helped me, especially in the early stages, was Fitday. It's free and a great way to keep track of everything. http://www.fitday.com
I know its sounds ridiculous, but you may find your calories are too low. There are several threads in "Hot Links" (in the newbies section here) about eating 10x your current weight in order to avoid putting your body in starvation mode.
judy
:sunny: Thanks for the response, Judy.
The Atkins counselor told me on the phone that's exactly what I had probably done, and that my metabolism had most likely slowed way down, making me feel really worn out instead of energized!
That night, when I got home from work, I drank 8 oz. of V8 (8 usable carbs), and felt an immediate surge of energy, like a light being turned up inside of me that had been dimmed way down.
Since then, I've made sure that I had a lot of greens every day and that my carbs are at least 15 grams, which makes the diet a whole lot easier to live with.
I will weigh myself tomorrow before work, but have resisted the temptation to do so for several days, just to give my adjustments a chance to work.
FitDay sounds interesting, I checked out the website. If each and every meal must be recorded daily, that might be a problem with working. I try to make quick written notes of my intake and carb count now, but that can be a problem when I'm really busy, too.
There's a carb counter that looks a bit like a hand-held calculator for sale online, but it's cost is above my means. It might be worth saving toward, considering this is a lifetime committment.

Hi ILM,
I agree, Fitday can be time-consuming, but only at the beginning. Once you've recording for a few days, you just click on recent foods and it's a lot faster and easier.
btw, there's a free carb counter on the Atkins site that you can download. You can't carry it around with you, but it's better than nothing.
I'll be interested to hear how you done this week.
judy
I have the Atkins carb counter from the website printed out -- a copy at home and a copy at the office. I did buy some items from Atkins website that arrived a couple of days ago: some flavorings (nice sized plastic bottles, lots of varieties), a recipe book (not much in it, definitely NOT worth the money), and a little carb counter book (nice to carry around, just over $3.00 on sale).
I'm curious about this week, too, but almost afraid to look at a scale. I know I need to exercise, but injuries almost always follow (like when I last used a stair stepper under the direction of a physical therapist, and wound up with a big bulge where a muscle "popped" in my thigh, it took 3 weeks to heal).
I'll logon sometime next week and note if I've had progress or not.

Welcome to the tread.
I can relate to your walking problem. I am working much better since doing Atkins but I do get winded on long walks and have to stop for just a short time to recoupe so to speak. I too use fitday.com but to convert recipes I want to cook to LC recipes. Haven't figured how to use it other wise for the low carb bars and such and have only added a few favorites to its list. It is a great tool.

ILM, despite a lot of exercise, I have not lost any more scale weight since the first 2 weeks...I started around July 5. I have increased my calories to the 10 times weight but it hasn't made any difference. Tomorrow I am going to see a naturopath who specializes in ketogenic diet, and who has all the state of the art equipment re body fat% to see what needs tweaking. This way of eating however makes me feel good so I don't want to vary it too much...I think the giant weight losses don't happen as quickly when you are over 60- but our youthful impatience is still a bit there! One of the problems is generalizing from individual cases...each of us is different.

Re: GERD and Gluten Intolerance. I had GERD so bad for the last 15-20 years that it was unbearable unless I took at least 2 pepcids before every meal. And then I had to make sure that I didn't run out of baking soda and tums equivalents. Three days after I went on induction (I only lasted, strictly speaking for about 8 days) I noticed that my GERD was gone! Also for the last 20-30 years, I have not been able to eat lettuce at all--it gave me heartburn that even pepcid wouldn't affect. As also bananas. At a friend's house, I had to eat a lettuce salad that his visiting mother from Costa Rica had made for me--I couldn't graciously get out of it. Lo and behold, no resultant heartburn (or associated headache from the smell of the lettuce) ~2hrs after eating, or at all.
As to gluten intolerance, I used to think I had it--lots of diahrrea, gas, cramps, etc., then I quit drinking milk and most of that went away. I found accidentally that what remained could be dealt with if the bread contained oats (or oatmeal). Even making my own bread with 50% vital wheat gluten, along with at least a half cup of oatmeal, preferably more, gives no adverse reaction.
The only time I have gotten GERD or diahrrea since May 15 has been when I have cheated (boosting my metabolism out of ketosis--with me consuming more than ~60g carbs/day), or eaten something with milk, or both, with one exception--when I have more than 2 eggs, which leads me to believe that my mother may have had some sense after all when she said that I might be sensitive to eggs, as she was (her doctor said she had IBS, and that eggs, among other things, would probably make it worse, since more people are sensitive/allergic to eggs than just about any other food).
Thanks for the responses!
I think Azraelle is right about the eggs. They sure do repeat.
Oatmeal is not for me, my reaction to it was the clue my nutritionist followed to find the gluten allergy. Barley does a major number on me too, mostly bellyache and huge reflux. However, I've tolerated half a plain bagel from time to time, before Atkins.
I do feel better in some ways, but the reflux is there, and I'm really tired.
Walking is ok, but I cannot go fast or far, and do best if pushing a cart to lean on. This would not qualify as exercise to lose weight.
There was a time, seems like a century ago, when I walked miles and backpacked, and more. About 4 years ago it came as quite a shock that I could no longer swing up onto a horse. There was the horse, and there was me with one foot in the stirrup, and my back just wouldn't lift the other leg and no one could push me up because I was so stiffened and heavy. Now, that was a downer! Ah well, the brain is willing but the body is weak.
Val, will you let us know how your naturapath works out? Many years ago I did the low carb diet and it worked fast and furious, with almost immediate ketosis (makes your breath smell like acetone). But youth is quick and age is slow.
I am so surprised and disappointed that the diet is not working this time around. Until this experience, it hadn't really hit what all has happened to my body, that nothing is reversible, and that this structure I live in simply will not obey me anymore. No wonder I've been down in the dumps lately...... :(
I sure could use some cheering up. This website could be just the place where we can give and take some of that cheer, like the put a penny - take a penny jar at some cash registers.

Hi ILM, will try to sound a note of hope here, I know our metabolisms have slowed down a bit, we need fewer calories. I am on Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Solution diet, and I like his approach to weight loss - keep your carbs to less than 30 ( he says 6 at breakfast, 12 at each of the other meals) then pick some amount of protein food that seems about right, like 3 oz sausage, 4 oz tuna, 6 oz steak, like that. Then of you do not lose, reduce by 25% the protein at any one meal - i.e., 3 oz tuna for lunch rather than 4. If you lose, great, keep it right there. If not do a 25% cut on another meal. You might try that, its a bit more restrictive than atkins, but not a starvation diet by any means. Also, consider the possiblility that its not just age, but thyroid or something like that. Finally, I'm aware of lots of studies that show huge increases in strength, via weight training, in people much older than we are. So, chin up, keep coming back here, to the (sob) Senior Support. P.S., Franklin Roosevelt was pres when both of us were born. So? Dunno, just a thought. Bill

Any extra movement helps pick up the metabolism a little.... you don't have to call it exercise for it to be valuable...
A few extra steps each time you get up all helps, and if it has to be leaning on a cart.... so be it... I can't walk far or fast either...
Have you ever thought of wearing a pedometer.... count the steps you do in an ordinary day... then each day attempt to add a few more... it incredible how this motivates you to do a little more each day.. to up the numbers...
My doctor also has me doing simple exercises with light (3lb) weights for my arms and shoulders while I am sitting.. the object to build more muscle.... even a slight increase in muscle will lift the metabolism too...
He pointed out that as we age, we lose muscle... a pretty universal happening.... and that is why we need less calories... and why most people gain weight as they age.. without changing anything else... so.... anything we can do to reverse this trend will help...
I also lost easily on Atkins.... 20 years ago.... and get frustrated at times now cause it is so much slower.... but.... just keep going.. it all adds up.. and this is a great way of life... so many other things improve too.... you will never be sorry..
Hi Alaskaman Bill and reowdy Pam,
 Your responses are encouraging! The really amazing thing about it is, Bill is in Alaska, Pam is in Australia, and I'm near Washington, DC ;and I feel as if the encouragement is coming from neighbors!
I did lose one more pound, bringing my grand total for about a month of really working at it to six poinds. Seems I do best if I eat a bit more than I want. Mostly, I get engrossed in my work and forget to eat, sometimes managing a full day on a couple of carbs. Water is no problem, my water bottle is always by my side and refilled repeatedly.
When I eat MORE carbs, even when I nicked a petite four :nono: from the kitchen here once (sent as a gift from a donor, I work for a nonprofit agency), I seem to feel better and see a bit of downward movement on my scale. Odd, but true.
Today's "treat" was from our kitchen: a platterful of cabbage salads and some pickled eggplant with a blob of techina on top. Very middle-eastern and very yummy. I don't know if techina (sauce made from sesame seeds ground up smooth) is high-carb, but the salads were not a really bad splurge; I just don't know exactly what was in them since I didn't make them (that was the best part of the whole meal).
Cooking is a definite drawback to this system. I like to cook, but NOT after work. Since work is 95% of my life, there is little time when cooking is fun anymore. I've ordered a second batch of stuff from Atkins, and have a box of low-carb bars for grabbing when I don't want to pack lunch.
Keep the information coming as to who has lost what and at what age - it's very encouraging to know that perseverance can pay off. I'll be trying some suggestions.
Thanks,
Ina

The problem is that I could always lose easily before, and I got spoiled. Back in the day, I had lots of energy as soon as I would begin cutting back on junk food, but not this time.
Age must be the big bugaboo, because nothing else is different. If I had the big $$, I'd go to a spa and lose weight in luxury. But then, if my diet had been steaks and caviar, I'd never have gained in the first place. Chips are cheap and keep peace in my stomach, but they go right to the hips (and a whole lot of other annoying places, too).
You should be very proud of your accomplishment; and with hips and knee replacements, well, I don't figure your weight loss is attributed to jogging and sweaty workouts! You give me hope.....
Ina :)
