Hey folks - i was just going through my low carb food cabinet, and realized that there are certain foods that make my low carb diet possible, and that im not certain i could low carb without.
Id like to share those 5 items with you, and see what your top 5 are - this is not intended to advertise for any company, i wouuld just like to get a feel for what you feel is critical to your diet
Heres mine, lets here yours
1. La Tortilla factory wraps - only 3g's of carbs per wrap, finally sandwiches! Tuna, steak strips, its all possible now
2. Flax=o=meal hot cereals = finaly, oatmeal style breakfast with just 1 g of carbs
3. Cheeters crackers - 1g per slice, these crackers are finally what i have been looking for, something dry, crunchy, and oh yes, tasty! the cinnamon flavor is great
4. Sugar Free Jelly belly jelly beans! hehe, i have a huge sweet tooth, and every now and then ill have 5-10 jelly beans, it really keeps me goin, and only 1-3 effective per 20 pieces
5. Eas myoplex low carb bars - the only low carb bars i have found that taste really good - the only bar that dosent have that tell-tale thick inside thats the same in all low carb bars,, its actually soft, and very tasty,, my favorites are the blueberry and apple cinnamon - only 3g per bar (by the way, they normally cost $2 a bar, wal mart is selling a 6 pack for $5.85 - great deal!)
Well thats mine, so please contribute yours! maybe it will help us all find new stuff to keep us goin
thanks!

I'm in NC as well. Chapel Hill to be exact. Came here from NY 3 years ago, been low carbing since October 2002. Just wanted to introduce myself and say hello!

P.S. Where do you buy those items that you say you always have on hand? I'd certainly like to get some of those. Whole Foods Stores/Wellspring by chance?

I love the Ross Dark Chocolates and the Carbolite peanut butter cups frozen BUT they stall my weightloss (all the hidden carbs) so I look forward to them during maintenance.
My 5 fav foods would be:
shrimp salad (w/ lots of mayo and celery)
raw red pepper w/ cream cheese and salt
pepperoni chips
macadamian nuts and pecans
cocoa fluff (1 oz cream cheese, 1 oz heavy cream, tsp cocoa, 1 splenda)

Does anyone know where to buy brown sugar twin? I don't have my carb book with me so I can't tell you how many carbs there are in a sweet potatoe.

How many carbs are in sweet potatoes? 'Bout 24g per 1/2 cup.
There's a carb counter on this site under "Low Carb Tools" and there's a very extensive thread on this forum on buying Canadian Brown Sugar Twin (and regular Canadian sugar twin) online - just put Brown Sugar Twin into the search tool with my username and you'll pull it up.

I bought my Brown Sugar Twin from my local No Frills Supermarket so it is probably available in most grocery stores as they dont carry anything exotic at No Frills.

P.S. My vote goes for the whole, natural foods as my favourite low carb foods

In the USA Sugar Twin is not made with cyclamates (it's made with saccharine I believe) and it can't be cooked / baked with. To get the Canadian version you either have to take a trip across the border or do a little online shopping. (Or know someone here willing to ship it over!)

You're welcome :) Just be sure you're getting the one made with Cyclamates if you plan on cooking / baking with it; otherwise you'll be unpleasantly surprized (and I think it's still illegal to sell cyclamates in the US).

Nat, if the US Brown SugarTwin is made with saccharin, it CAN be cooked with. If it's made with aspartame/Equal, it CAN'T (breaks down in the heat). See that thread discussing the details of the stuff again :D  :D at http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21643&highlight=Canadian+AND+sugar+AND+twin
I'm pretty sure the cyclmates have been taken off the verboten list by the FDA but I'm also pretty sure nobody in the States is making any tabletop sweetener product yet.
Flossie and others, for enquiries about products available in the UK, or things to do and questions to ask when just starting out, there are the Local LowCarbers & Support Groups::UK forum and/or the Introduction:New Members and Low Carbers forum where there's a wealth of information, and just exactly the kind of information you are looking for... enjoy!
As for the subject of THIS thread? I simply couldn't manage very well (or happily) without my:
salmon
ground Canadian flaxseed
basil and lemon oil spray
free-range local farm eggs
Starbucks Verona DeCaf :D
and lots and lots of filtered water, so my water filter really SHOULD be on that list.

Can I get your recipe for low carb cheesecake????
Kim

Thu, Jan-23-03, 10:15
It's actually my son's recipe. It has about 5 carbs/slice, more if you add whipped topping with strawberries. Another option is to add some blueberry or cherry DaVinci syrup.
2 - 8 ounce packages of cream cheese
2 eggs
2 tsps vanilla
1/4 cup Splenda
Mix it all together VERY well. Put into an oiled pie pan. Bake at 350 degrees F, for about 30 minutes. You want it golden brown on top without being burnt. It will probably poof up and crackle.
It's a very simple recipe, but good. Rich.
We have another recipe for a lighter cheesecake that has fewer carbs, but there are also plenty of recipes on this site if you want variety. :)

How about everyone add items to their such as where to buy these things and how much they cost. Most 'low carb' products I see come in a 2 ounce bad and they cost $10. Any hints on where to buy reasonably priced items would be helpful.

I just have to say that these things are lifesavers for me. I don't think I'd be doing nearly as well without them. I can do so much with them, sandwiches, wraps, tacos, melts, etc...
a few weeks ago, everyone was out of therm so I stocked up!

Yow. Only five? Let me see. I'm an inveterate foodie so it's hard to narrow it down to five genres much less five individual things I couldn't live without. For me, I suppose, it would narrow down to the basic ingredients that I use on a nearly daily basis that make LC cooking an adventure.
In no particular order:
1. Bacon (the Hormel Microwave bacon is convenient, has zero carbs and is about the same price as the sugar-cured Fletcher's center cut that I used to indulge in).
2. Guar gum. Until I found that, my initial LC experience was thin gravies and runny sauces. Now I can slather gravy on all that Roast Beast (as my children call it) to my heart's content.
3. Liquid Stevia Extract. I can make sweet-n-sour, ketchup, bbq, and other "sweet" sauces without the chemical plant taste of sucralose.
4. Textured Vegetable Protein. Mixed half-and-half (dry) with the cheap green can parmesan makes a wonderful breading for chicken, pork chops and the like with minimal carbs.
5. "Better than Boullion" stock bases. The source of all my sauces. It's a thick paste that when mixed with hot water forms a smooth stock that blends with any flavor for a terrific sauce.
There's a ton more, but this is the basic five that make it all possible for me.

Boy, the basic five low-carb food items that I couldn't do without are...
#1 eggs I love eggs. I usually have them every day for breakfast and at least one hard boiled one with my salads for lunch. I also use them in a "million" recipes that wouldn't work without them. Eggs are definitely #1, low in carbs, high in protein, delicious, and versitile!
#2 Cheese I just couldn't go a day without some kind of cheese, either as a snack or baked into something.
#3 cauliflower Cauliflower is great raw or cooked. There are so many different ways to fix it. It really helps me deal with potato cravings when I use cauliflower to make mock twice baked not potatoes casserole!
#4 nuts The delicious and previously forbidden nuts are such a great snack! It is super to be able to eat them and not feel bad about their fat content. Nuts are a great snack and I also use them in many recipes that control sweet cravings!
#5 meat Jerky for snacks, turkey or chicken or ham in my salad, main course dishes with meat, leftover roast beef or steak as a snack and all of it zero carbs! I just couldn't do this WOE without meat, no offense to the vegetarians out there.
Well, those are my "can't do without" top 5. I have been finding so many new foods on this WOE that I never tried before. That is one of the best things about this WOE. Instead of bemoaning the foods I no longer can have, I am relishing the new, delicious, and much healthier foods I now eat and enjoy!
Happy Low-Carbing to all!

The Health Food Store is the single most popular place to purchase such items as Guar or Xanthan gum, or Liquid Stevia in a dropper bottle.

Hmmm, difficult to choose only 5. Well, here it goes.
eggs, because all things are possible with eggs
bacon (YUM!)
All cheeses
Chicken Breasts
Ground Beef
On a side note, I have been perusing the forums for a couple of months now and have a bit of advice for those who are looking for certain low carb products and having a difficult time finding them. For example, someone earlier in the thread asked where they could find Guar Gum.
I live in a very small town (approximately 3,000 people) and I have found that the best way to find those hard to find products is to go to your local grocery store chain and see if it would be possible to have them special order it for you. I used to work for a grocery store and you would be surprised what they could dig up. All you would have to do is go up to the Customer Service Desk, Courtesy Counter, or whatever, and ask for a special order slip. Another option is to ask to speak to the Grocery Manager or whomever does the grocery ordering for the store and see what they can come up with.
Granted, this may not work if you want to order something from Keto brand or the like, but you may be able to get your hands on that elusive Stevia or Brown Sugar Twin or Guar Gum. The worst they can say is that they can't get it for you. Most of the time (at least at the store I worked for) if they can get it, you might even get a discount. At my store, Albertsons, they would sometimes give about a 10% discount on special orders.
Just a thought! :D

My top 5:
1. Eggs - I rarely ate eggs before LC, now I eat them every single day.
2. Mozarella and cheddar cheese sticks - great food on the go
3. Brocolli - tastes great in pretty much everything
4. Mushrooms - ditto
5. Bacon - goes well with all of the above
and Davinci sugar free syrups for those rare :D (now) sugar cravings.
