Aside from impressing people, is there really a benefit to one
arm push ups?

I still have trouble balancing on one arm. More work needed...

Your next goal is to do a one-arm chinup. ;-)

If you have to ask you can't do one pansy boy.

And BTW, yes, they do hurt if your RC isn't top notch.

Yes, a definite benefit; your weight is focused on one arm
instead of two, therefore that one arm receives more exercise.
There are so many variations of pushups it is amazing. You can
spread your hands wider to focus on your chest muscles are
bring them in tighter to focus on your arm muscles. You can do
finger pushups that strengthen your fingers, or do
three-finger pushups or even THUMB pushups (got that out of a
martial outs book -- they make thumbs stronger for gouging or
whatever). Pushups are good body tonic.

Is the one armed pushup more of an arm exercise and less of a
chest exercise than the regular pushup? It seems that you
don't get the same stretch in a one armed pushup.

Well, I can do them, but that the motion is so akward that it
does not seem to hit a major muscle group. Hence the question.

That's my goal for this year. Well... to tell you the truth,
it was last years goal also.

With two hands or one? If you're talking about doing them with
two fingers of each hand, well, that isn't very hard. One hand
is definitely impressive.

Yep, two fingers on one hand, the other hand behind his back.
I watched him do ten at about a 5/5 tempo. He was into rock
climbing in a big way.

Have you ever seen the grip boards those kidz use? A piece
of plywood on the wall with several horizontal slats
nailed to it.
At advanced levels they can jump up from 1 slat to the next
with *both* hands. Some of them even do drop catches from one
slot down to the next, or even skipping one.
Talk about your plyos.
