Has anyone tried Chapman's sugar free ice cream? I have heard about it, and it sounds quite good. It's sweetened with Splenda and is a full fat ice cream. I think there are 3 flavors - vanilla, chocolate, and butterscotch. They range in carbs from aroun 5-8 per 1/2 cup serving, depending on which flavor. I know that they carry them in Vancouver at the Urban Fare, but I was wondering if anyone had tried them. Before I spend my money, I want to know if it's worthwhile! I think these are made in Ontario, so maybe someone there has had it before.

Theresa :)

I found the Vanilla here just recently (and it's new there I think) at the Real Canadian Superstore ... which would be a Loblaw's back East.
It's reasonably tasty and has nice texture; it's VERY white for a Vanilla and remarkably sweet, ends up tasting a lot like marshmallow creme instead of Vanilla, though.
Caution: like almost ALL sugar-replacements, a sugar alcohol (maltitol) is the major ingredient. Hidden carbs and possible digestive distress as well as a halt to ketosis are all possibilities. Run through the "carbulator" (the Hidden Carb calculator from the Tools on the menu bar above).

from the Chapman's website (http://www.chapmans.ca/): Vanilla No Sugar Added Ice Cream Product - serving size 50g (94ml), 96 cal, 1.5g prot, 5g fat, 11g carbs, 5.9g maltitol
Butterscotch Ripple No Sugar Added Ice Cream Product - serving size 50g (94 ml), 98 cal, 1.4g prot, 4.7g fat, 13g carbs, 6.8g maltitol
Dutch Chocolate No Sugar Added Ice Cream Product - serving size 50g (94 ml), 92 cal, 1.7g prot, 4.6g fat, 11g carbs, 5.7g maltitolNote the serving size is only 50g (94 ml) NOT ˝ cup, which is 125 ml.
For the vanilla, if you choose to have ˝ cup portion, the counts look like this: 128 cal, 2g prot, 6.7g fat, 14.6g carbs, 7.85g maltitol.

I eat the Chapman's ice cream occasionally. Actually it's more like I go through stages where I have it every day, then not again for a long time. My favourite is the Cookies ' n' Cream, they are all pretty good though. It does have more sweeteners than just the Splenda. I seem to do ok with sugar alcohols, but not everybody does.
I think if I were you I would wait a while before getting in to stuff like this though.

I actually happen to have not one, but TWO boxes of Mr. Freeze in my hot little mitts right now :D My whole family really likes them, and it has been quite hot lately.
They are made with both sorbitol and Splenda, and have 1.4 g of carbs per freezie. Not bad for a favorite summer treat!!
I got my box(es) from Wal-Mart, for $3.97 each, and it is a big box, lasts for a while (hopefully!!). I will post this over in the Yellow Pages as well.

I stopped into a Penguin's Yogurt and found that they had Carbolite low carb frozen yogurt. It was fantastic! I found it on their website above.
They will sell it to the public, but in the form they sell it to the yogurt shops. You must add one bag of mix to one gallon of water. There is only chocolate and neutral mix. I bought both.
To make 1 quart of chocolate frozen yogurt:
2 1/8 cups mix
4 cups water
Mix in a blender for two minutes at lowest setting. Pour into your ice cream maker and let spin for 45 minutes. Tastes like Fudgesicle (spelling?) ice cream pops I used to eat as a kid.
To make 1 quart of creamy orange frozen yogurt:
2 cups neutral mix
4 cups water
22 drops yellow food coloring
4 drops red food coloring
1 tbsp orange extract
Mix in a blender for two minutes at lowest setting. Pour into your ice cream maker and let spin for 45 minutes. This is deeelishh, absolutely yummy. I think the neutral mix tastes better than the chocolate and I'm going to try a bunch of flavors. I'll update later.
This stuff stays soft in the freezer and is better after freezing a little.
Carbolite Frozen Yogurt:
Serving size: 1/2 cup
40 calories
0 g fat
5 g chol
45 g sodium
10 g carbohydrates
3 g fiber
4 g sugar alcohols
3 g protein
Label says effective carbs 4 g (if you don't count sugar alcohols)
With sugar alcohols: 7 g Effective Carbs

I just moved to San Diego and discovered what I think is the most fabulous product ever...LOW CARB FROZEN YOGURT IN 112 (YES, THAT'S 112) FLAVORS! A local store called Sweet-n-Sugarfree rotates six flavors per day and it's absolutely to die for, but maybe a little bit too much so. There's about four carbs per 1/2 cup serving, and it takes LOTS of personal control to limit myself. Does anyone know why this is? Is it the Splenda or the four carbs or just the sweet taste?
:q: I'm not sure how many carbs I should be consuming and how I should distribute them throughout the day...ANY ADVICE? I'd really appreciate feedback on the Carbolite Froyo and Carb Intake...thanks so much!
IslandGirl
Tue, Sep-10-02, 15:51
Problems with limiting means cravings being triggered (and I'm guessing sugar alcohols).
Search this forum (see the Search button on the upper right), I'm almost positive the Carbolite Frozen Ice Cream and/or Yogurt product has been discussed before.
You can also go to the Carbolite website to check label information, I'm sure.
On the other hand, staying here, you can get a good NET EFFECTIVE CARB COUNT rather than relying on the label (labels have been played with a lot in this business), use the Hidden Carb calculator from the orange menu bar above, click on Tools and take it from there, plugging in Calories, Fat & Protrein grams and stated Carb grams, then OK.

Yesterday, at Wal-Mart, I got some "ice cream" called LeCarb. It is great!
It comes in chocolate, strawberry, and lemon in one pint containers. It is made with Splenda and has about 6 grams carb per 1/2 cup serving. It also contains glycerin which is a problem for some people.
For a very rare treat, it might be worth a try.

I went shopping at WalMart this afternoon and saw that they had low carb ice cream. It's put out by Goldenbrook and the name of it is LeCarb Frozen Dessert. I saw strawberry, vanilla, chocolate and lemon flavors. Total carbs per 1/2 cup was 6 and it said of that 2g are from glycerine. I'm not even sure what the significance of that statement is. I read the list of ingredients and it is sweetened with Splenda. Anyone tried it yet?

Bought 2 chocolate....just had a bowl last night, very good and no ill effects. When I was sick a while back I had a small helping of real ice cream (medicinal purposes) for a burning throat....shortly after I was feeling terrible from it. :(
LeCarb just left me happy and satisfied with no "kick ins" for
nasty things.

WOW! If you haven't heard of it, Le Carb ice cream is a sugar free (sweetened with splenda, and NO sugar alcohols) ice cream sold right at Wal-Mart! Theres 5 or 6 flavors.
The first flavor I tried was the chocolate almond. It was "good", but I'm not a big chocolate fan so you may think its great!
The second flavor I tried was the Cinnamon. 3 words: OH MY GOD. This is the best ice cream I've ever had, sugar or no sugar. It reminded me of pumpkin pie-its definitely going to be at my thanksgiving dinner! If you have a Super Walmart near you, you HAVE to try this. Its sold near the ben and jerry's little ice cream things. There are 4 half cup servings in each container. I'm pretty good at portion control these days, but even if you arent, the entire container of Cinnamon ice cream is only 400 calories and about 12 grams carbs(24 if glycerin effects you)!
Anyway, just wanted to give you all a heads up. If you try it and like it as much as I did, let me know in my journal!
See ya,
Michelle

Found this at Kroger's tonight..Slender Ice Cream. It's low fat and made with Splenda. And it's yummy! I got the chocolate....here's the breakdown:
source grams cals %total
Total: 90
Fat: 5 41 36%
Sat: 3 27 24%
Carbs: 14 40 35%
Fiber: 4 0 0%
Protein: 3 12 11%
Alcohol: 3 21 19%
It does have Sorbital in it, but 1/2 cup once in a while won't hurt!
And it's so yummy!!!
CindySue
PS I checked the hidden carb counter and it came out with 9.75 gms carb....that's even better! :)
IslandGirl
Sun, Nov-24-02, 23:07
Hi, CindySue.
I was just reading your post, and there's something really wonky about that information from the label.
For instance, if you add up all the calories, it comes to 114 cals per serving not 90, and if you use the Hidden Carb calculator based on the TOTAL calories as given (not the 90 at the top), you'll probably get a very different number, maybe a more accurate one... Do remember, for the Hidden Carb calculator to work, the Calories at LEAST must be close to accurate, to get a true "net" or effective carb count approximation...

My DH and I love this stuff. We have frozen yogurt/ice cream shops in our area that sell this, and we've become totally addicted to it. There's 3g effective carbs and 36 calories per half cup (sweetened with Spenda). We're such regular customers at one shop by our house the owner even takes our requests for different favorite flavors. We realized we're spending about $100.00 a month on it though so we have to cut down. Anybody else eat this and love it like we do?

The name of the shop we go to is "Yummy Yogurt" although there are independent ice cream shops that sell it too. I know Carbolite sells the mix online in big bags, and you purchase flavorings seperately or I imagine you could come up with your own. I'm just not sure how it would turn out in an ice cream maker since those soft serve machines add so much air to it.
I'd better leave those peanut butter cup things alone, my will power can't take it. That's what I love about Carbolite, low calorie as well as low carbohydrate.

Hi - can anyone provide me with any brands of commercially available low carb ice cream ( not the kind from the low carb companies that require mixes, etc)
I saw one from Eadys with 13g for half a cup of vanilla ice cream, no sugar added, with 4g sugar alochol, making the net 9g, so i figure i can half a 1/4 cup with 4.5 g.
Anyone know of any other brand with less g?

It is a new product from carbolite to make frozen dessert. Now I got a huge 2.3 lbs bag yesterday and it says mix the whole bag with 1 gallon of water. Now I do not want to use the bag in one go, so how much should I use is unclear . ( well, might calculate it to my European metric measures.) My other problem is the nutrition label. On carbolite web-site it says one serving is half a cup. But is it now half a cup of the mixed ready product or half a cup of the powder?
Can anyone help?
It has a bit too sweet taste, but it is okey. Although I like pudding better and actually wanted to mix pudding, but it does not thicken so much.

Thu, Dec-12-02, 19:30
Kati, you ended up buying the commercial size bag.
It should say on there somewhere how much the YIELD is when 2.3 lbs and a gallon of water are mixed together, but a couple of ways to go about it is to:
- contact the people you bought it from and ask them (do they have a website or phone number?)
- use a fraction of the water (1 pint which is 1/8th of a gallon, right?) and the same fraction 1/8th of the mix ... wing it.
Also, I would assume a "serving" of 1/2 Cup is the prepared mixed ready product (serving is, per the FDA, a reasonable edible amount).
Good luck.

You're going to love these.
1 stick of unsalted butter
1 oz. unsweetened chocolate
1/3 C Splenda
1 T heavy cream
4 T peanut butter
chopped walnuts (optional)
Melt butter, chocolate and splenda in microwave. Stir in cream and peanut butter. Line 10 (in my case 6) muffin tins with cupcake papers. (I don't do this either...they just pop out easily once they are firm). Freeze until firm. These need to be stored in the freezer because they melt quick. You can eat them right out of the freezer!
Enjoy!

Well according to my calculations from Fitday.com, each cup has 3.4 carbs.
The chocolate (one ounce) has 8.02 carbs, 4 tablespoons of peanut butter has 12.34 carbs. Splenda has zero, heavy cream has zero, margarine/butter has zero. That added up and divided by 6 (I make 6 cups at a time) turns out to be 3.4 carbs per cup. Not too bad for a very satisfiying snack. One is certainly enough. They are probably twice the size of reeses peanut butter cups. :yum:
Another sweet snack I always try to have in the fridge is sugar free jello. A cup of that with a tablespoon or two of cool whip is a great sweet tooth remedy. :yum:
I'm not sure if anyone told you about fitday.com. It's a wonderful resource if you're trying to find out how many carbs are in something. It also is a way for you to keep track of your progress plus many other tid bits of valuable information. Check that out when you have a chance, it's free! :cheer:

I bought the LeCarb Icecream at SuperWalmart last weekend. Since the Super Walmart is out of my my, I bought 3 containers:
Vanilla
Chocolate Almond
Lemon
So far I have only had one serving of the vanilla and it was really good. It is made with Splenda. Here is the really good news. i bought it on Saturday and now it is Tuesday evening. I know it is in the freezer but I am not craving it. Before this WOL, all three pints would have been gone by now. So it is a very creamy and tasty product but it has not set off any cravings.

I noticed the LeCarb Ice Cream line for the first time today at Mother's Market in Newport Beach (CA). This stuff is awesome...especially the Chocolate Almond. It was $3.49/pint which seemed expensive at first, but is actually slightly cheaper than pints of B&Js and Hagen Dazs. I won't say this stuff is as good as those...but it's much better than Healthy Choice or Dreyer's Light brands.
These are also fairly low calorie...a pint is about 400 calories compared to 1,000 for a typical pint of Hagen Dasz...ouch.
Big Thumbs Up!

Oh, forgot to mention that last night I went to a low-carb store called D-Lite and they had 4-5 flavors of icecream called CarboLite. I gram per ounce. I got a small icecream, 3 carbs no toppings. Vanilla Almond. Pretty tasty. The product uses Splenda and is pretty rich and creamy.

Check out this link to d'lites in Lauderdale, if you live close by you can use a coupon! I found a Carbolite web page, but no icecream retail locations. Here in California you often find it in yougurt shops.
Good luck! There are other brands coming out that are prepackaged Atkins, Brookshire Farms. I tasted both of these and they were great.

Cabolite Info:
There is controversy surrounding the great tasting carbolite... apparently they don't advertise that the carb count is closer to 2 carbs per oz. and their product also contains malitol. I eat it on occasion & i just count it as 2 per ounce.

i just found the info. carbolite 4 carbs per 1/2 cup.

:spin: The ice cream is WONDERFUL. It has the texture and taste of real icecream. I am not sure what the brand name is of the stuff I got.. I believe it was Le Carb. They sell it in containers about the size of Ben and Jerry's and also in single half cup sizes (which they also stick 6 to a pack , like the lil ice cream cups that come with a wooden spoon). :D I tried the chocolate and homemade vanilla, but I also saw the store was stocking strawberry and chocolate almond... and the best part? :q: It didnt cause gas or uhm other uncomfortable situations like other low carb sweets out there. :p You just have to remember to eat as a treat or in moderation.. I will treat myself to the small half cup size which is only 3 carbs. Soooooo satisfying, especially when my hubby is eating his real stuff :)
I am fortunate to live in a city that has two+ health food stores that have 2-3 aisles of low carb products.. and let me tell you.. they are usually PACKED with ppl when I am in there! I can list a few things I have seen so that others can get an idea of what is out there.
Icecream
Bagels
Pizza
Bread
Muffins
Pasta
Barbque sauce
syrups
alcohlic drink mixes
cheese cake (frozen and mixes)
assorted chips
cereal
oatmeal (Keto brand Blueberries and Cream rocks!) :D :D
Jellybeans
Sugarfree Peep type marshmellow things (Easter is coming!!!)
Peanut brittle
Assorted cookies
Jams
Well, there are the things I could think of off the top of my head.. there are countless others. If anyone would like the name and phone number for the store where I purchase these things from they can email me at ******* and I will be happy to give it to you. They might have retail info on how to get these things or they might even ship to you. Hope this helps! :spin:

If you don't mind making it yourself...I have a good recipe for Low-Carb Ice Cream w. No Sugar Alcohols. I listed the ingridients on 7-4-02 in my fitday account, so you can see their breakdown of what it should have in it.
http://www.fitday.com/WebFit/PublicJournals.html?Owner=cc48510&Year=2002&Month=6&Day=4
Ingridients --
1.5 cups Unsweetened Soy Milk
1 cup Heavy Cream
3 Large Eggs
1 tbsp. Vanilla Extract
1 tsp. Stevia Extract Powder
Preparation --
1) Pour soy milk into bowl.
2) Add Eggs to bowl.
3) Add Vanilla Extract.
4) Add Stevia.
5) Add Heavy Cream.
6) Freeze According to Ice Cream Maker Directions.
NOTES:
1) Vanilla Extract contains Alcohol. The Ice Cream would contain 4g Alcohol (1/2 - 1/3 Alcoholic Drink) per 3 cups. So, if you prefer...use non-alcoholic vanilla extract.
2) You can substitute Splenda or other sweetener of choice for the Stevia. Just make sure to adjust serving size and carb. count*
3) Read the label on the Soy Milk to make sure it has no added carbs. Unsweetened Soy Milk should run about 1g net carbs.
4) If you don't have an Ice Cream maker...Place ice cream in freezer and stir every 15-30 minutes until desired consistency.
*Splenda and Other Artificial Sweeteners use Maltodextrin and Dextrose as a filler which adds carbs. Stevia Blends (Impure Stevias) use Maltodextrin which also adds carbs. Pure Stevia Extract should have no Filler and almost no carbs.
Equivelancies --
1 tsp. Stevia Extract Powder
1.75 tsp. Stevia Liquid Extract
9 tsp. Spoonable Stevia
18 Packets Stevia Blend
3/4 cup Splenda

I tried this this weekend. I am on induction but I was craving something sweet and this was better than oreos. I tried the lemon and the chocolate almond. They were great. It says only 6 g per .5 cup, (I think). I am impressed and relieved someone is finally making a really good ice cream. Anyone else tried these?

:yum: I was so glad to find this at my local health food store. I had been wanting some ice cream for weeks. Of course, it certainly isn't the same as ice cream, but it is a pretty good substitute. I had the chocolate, 'cuz that's the only kind they had. But chocolate almond sounds even better!

Yes, I found it at my local Walmart this past weekend and picked up a pint of vanilla and a pint of the chocolate almond. I used some of the vanilla, adding cream and a couple of strawberries and made a milkshake. Yum!!!!
Because of that...and trying out Carol's Famous Chocolate Cheesecake...and also having to test all of the varieties of the Hershey SF candies...AND drinking way more Diet Rite than I should (would prefer to only drink 1 every week or two), I am going back to strict induction starting tomorrow. I've gotten lazy and it is being reflected by a slowing down of the weightloss. I know I'm in the time frame of having a plateau...and I have lost a ton of weight and my body may be "resting", but I also know I've been eating a lot of junk. Low carb junk...but still junk.
Back to the basics for me :)

I found this today at my local health food store and it is the best!!! It's $4.89 for 4 individual servings, and well worth it. It comes in vanilla and chocolate. Put some Steel's hot fudge sauce and spanish peanuts on the vanilla and it's heaven. I called Atkin's Direct and she said they don't sell it on the website, but if your store can get it, it's fabulous.

That sounds like a great treat for after induction. If you're still using the word "crave" you haven't used induction to it's fullest potential...to get over craving, needing etc. certain foods, i.e. to break that carb addiction....hate to sound like a sour puss, but Dr. A really does have a method .

I bought both the chocolate and vanilla flavors tonight at Jewel (Albertson's local chain). I tried one of the vanilla cups and it was wonderful. :yum: I love LeCarb, but this had more of an ice cream texture and taste. The ECC also works out to be close to LeCarb's count also. I'll probably keep buying LeCarb as it's quite a bit cheaper than the Endulge ice cream, but it's a nice treat every now and then!
BTW- I let the cup sit out for a few minutes and it softened up quite nicely.

I found Le Carb ice cream at a Wal-Mart in Grafton, WV, and have bought it several times--and found it delicious. But when I visited on Saturday the shelves were cleaned out, so apparently they have stopped stocking it.

Went searching for it once I read about it on the boards! Now my freezer is full of the stuff! DH and I each have our own containers, that way I can just grab a spoon and eat it out of the carton when I want!
Sandylee I look at it this way, there are 6 carbs 1/2 cup serving, 2 of which are Glycerine which mean really only 4 carbs a serving. For the whole container then there are 16 carbs! I will eat about 1/4 of a container at a time. But if I don't stop in time, I really don't worry about it! :D

Hi,
I have to say home made is the best idea so you know exactly what is in the ice-cream.
I read about a tip the other day to add guar gum (about 1/2 tsp) to the recipe - apparently it is supposed to keep the ice-cream soft after freezing, but you will need to defrost in fridge for about 10 mins or nuke in microwave for minute before serving.
Haven't tried this yet but will experiment next time I make ice-cream.
BTW, I use a home-made ice-cream maker, Sunbeam Igloo.

Home-Made LC Ice Cream runs 7-8g per pint. Most brands of LC Ice cream sold in the store are 12-24g per pint...and that is if you deduct the Glycerine and/or Sugar Alcohols, which I don't. You aren't going to find ZERO Carb Ice Cream. Your best bet for Low-Carb Ice Cream is to make it yourself, because the store brands are just too high in carbs for me. BTW, I used pints, because they are a more reasonable serving than the pathetic 1/2 cup most packages list.

at the Super Walmart (Walmart + grocery store) I found Goldenbrook Le Carb frozen dessert and that stuff is good!!!
6 carbs per 1/2 cup so it is a little high so I save it for more special occassions but it is tasty. And there are a a lot of flavors as well; vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, cinnamon, lemon, fudge swirl with almonds even!
And to boot it was reasonably priced at about 2.50 for about 5 servings.
I highly recommend it if you are craving something sweet! And no tummy aches like those horrid russel chocolates.

The Le Carb ice cream has only 3 effective carbs per 1/2 cup. 6 carbs total, but 3 of those are glycerine, which have no impact. That makes their carb count lower than Atkins. As Atkins uses only effective carb count too. Just thought you might wanna know :D

Umkay, I have just tried the Atkins Endulge chocolate ice cream. Here is my review:
Cost - $4.99 for a box of four 4oz cups. I'm giving this a thumbs down... pricey for little cups and they don't even come with the cute wooden spoon!
Taste - Yummy and creamy. But have you ever tried to make the "mousse" recipe off of the side of the Atkins Shake mix can? It tastes just like that, minus the "protein" flavor.
Result: Very convenient, "crave-controlling" serving sizes, satisfying, a little costly... and you could just make this with your shake mix and some heavy cream, add a dash of splenda. Turns out that would even be cheaper! :)

Hi, I was at the store yesterday and saw that Chapman's has no sugar added ice cream, yet it was still 11 g per serving, but I read somewhere that you subtract malitol from the carbs to get the net carbs. I believe there is almost 6 g of malitol per serving. I didn't buy it because I wanted to make sure what I was going to be eating before. Isn't it just a sweetener and therefore counts or what's the scoop on malitol. I appreciate any info on this, thanks.

From my understanding, malitol and other sugar alcohols do not affect your insulin levels in the same way that other carbohydrates do. If you want to read more about it you can go to the atkins web-site. To get the carbo count on the ice cream you were looking at subtract the sugar alcohols from the total carbs.
11-6=5
So per serving there are 5 net carbs.

Just opened one out of curiousity to sample while my dinner zucchini is baking :) and it was DELICIOUS! A little watery, but definitely something I need to stock up on for the next time I get sick (my two downfalls of low-carbing have been the two times when I was sick and could only eat ice cream!)
And they could make a killing by advertising that this stuff has *one-third* the calories of Haagen-Dazs the same size. I compared (I have some left over from the last time I was sick, sadly).
Yummy! Yay Gristedes! They now carry Le Carb AND Atkins ice creams.

I was disappointed to find that the sugarfree version of one of my favorite pre-LC ice creams. Breyer's still has 14 grams of carbs per half cup. Then one day I was searching the Internet for information on how commercial ice cream makers prevent their ice cream from developing ice crystals in the freezer (guar and/or xanthan gum) and I found a course on making ice cream commercially from the University of Guelph. It turns out that they add powdered skim milk, which has lots of carbs, to the ice cream. Too bad, because it would be great to be able to buy truly LC ice cream.

Just drove 30 minutes to the closest Wal Mart Super Center..and lo and behold they had Le Carb Ice Cream! I was so excited I bought 4 pints (Chocolate, Chocolate Almond, Strawberry and Vanilla) and drove home (forgot to check for other low carb products, hehe).
Had a tiny taste of all of them, they are incredible, like the real thing! Even better than the Carbolite Soft Serve I found down the road!

United stores also carry LeCarb. They were 2 for $5.oo last week. Of course, they're cheaper at walmart. Try the Cinnamon. I also tried the Atkins chocolate. It's wonderful. In individual cups but expensive. 4 cups for $4.99.

I ran across this frozen item in a Wal Mart and had heard about it from a friend. I have bought all 5 flavors and so far the Cinnamon is my favorite. I wasn't crazy about the strawberry, choc. is ok and lemon is good. Haven't gotten to the vanilla yet but it's next on my list.

I didn't realize that about the glycerine carbs. I'm still new at this. That explains why I didn't gain weight that night I lost control and ate the whole carton in one sitting! :D I don't make a habit of it, though. I like to spoon a little chocolate almond, and a little strawberry in a bowl together. I think this stuff is WONDERFUL! It really satisfies my craving for something sweet and special. I also like to just eat a spoonful out of the carton when I need something sweet, quick.

And what's great is NO sugar alcohols!!! The Atkins icecream tastes great too, but it has the SAs so watch out! I can eat Le Carb with no icky affects. I don't have any problems sticking to the 1/2 cup serving size (usually) because they now have individual cups packaged in, I think, 6 little containers (bagged together in plastic). I had never thought about speaking to the store manager with my wants. I'm always reading here about low carb products I'd like to try, but that our Wal-Mart doesn't carry.
I ditto adoring the Le Carb Chocolate Almond. I'll admit something, too. I never measure mine. I probably have more like two servings at a time, rather than one ('cept for the time I scarfed down the whole carton!), and it doesn't seem to have slowed my weight loss. Of course, I'm careful not to do that if I've had alot of carbs elsewhere that day. :)

LeCarb by Goldenbrook. Sells at Wal-Mart for $2.12 for 4-1/2 cup servings!!! I think the choco almond has 2 g of carbs per serving. And it tastes great!!! I'll try the strawberry next.
P.S. I haven't had any trouble sticking with the serving size. It is a small scoop and the way I see it, if I just eat the serving size I can have it more often. :D A good trick is to put it in a small bowl or sundae dish too...looks like you have more than you really do. LOL Then sit back a savor every bite.

I was very disappointed in it (Atkins Ice Cream) from a value standpoint (how much I got for the $$$)...
...and I thought the flavor was only a 5 on a 10 scale. It tasted like frozen ice milk or whatever that "diet" ice cream was that we all used to eat when LCal, LFat dieting.
I'd much prefer to make a LC Chocolate Cheesecake (http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?t=82527) , of which I savor every bite!

I found some ice cream in an Athens, Ohio Walmart that was made by Goldenbrook Farms which was called LeCarb. I found it to be a great treat every so often. However, I have never seen it anywhere else. They do have a website: www.goldenbrookfarms.com which takes you to the LeCarb site if you are curious. I had the chocolate flavor and chocolate with almonds and they were very satisfying. They have strawberry, Lemon, vanilla, homemade vanilla, chocolate, choc. with almonds, and cinnamon. I'm not real up on good and bad sweeteners so you might want to check it out, i know it is made with splenda and glycerine (2grams). My chocolate almond had 5 net carbs per 1/2 cup serving. Enjoy it if you find it! :wiggle:

Thanks for responding, guys. I just did a quick search on the web, and found a couple of articles that say that glycerin is a carbohydrate, but that it has a minimal impact on blood sugar, so I'm assuming that it would be safe to subtract this from the "total" carb count. Le Carb does advertise on the ice cream box that 3 of the 6 carbs are glycerin, so that also tells me that that is an important thing. If anyone else knows anything about this, I would appreciate more responses. Thanks!

Hey guys,
I've NEVER seen low carb ice cream sold anywhere around here.
I'm curious, how does it taste? On a scale of 1 - 10, how would you rate it? And, compare and contrast it to say, regular full fat and sugared Haagen Dazs.
When I see LC ice cream, it instantly conjures up images of sugar free soda, fake beef patties made with tofu, and lasagnas made with celery instead of pasta--all of which, I seem to find very distasteful to my palate.
Thanks,

Fredrick,
The ice cream from Le Carb and Atkins are fabulous!!!! I tried both the vanilla and chocolate though Le Carb seems a little less expensive. They have both ice creams at a health food store called Mother's and also at Trader Joe's. I saw it yesterday at Stater Bros. grocery store too. Well, I bought the Atkins, and wasn't impressed, Frederick - so, I gues YMMV.
I wish I could have bought a single cup to try instead of the 4 pack - I won't eat the rest.
One thing I did like was making the "baggie" ice cream - with just heavy cream and DaVinci syrup for sweetness and flavor - it was VERY tasty - and way cheaper.

Sun, Aug-03-03, 22:19
Thanks for all the replies, everyone!
I think the Le Carb ice cream tastes almost like the Atkins brand. They are very similar, except the Le Carb brand is cheaper - I paid almost five bucks for Atkins for four servings, and almost four bucks for six servings of the Le carb brand. They are both okay when I am craving ice cream. However, I think home made ice cream is THE BEST! I just ordered an awesome ice cream maker (no need to freeze the container overnight), so I don't think I will be buying these anymore.
Cindy007, yes, the weight for me did come off pretty fast, thank goodness! I was a little concerned when I first started atkins since I read everywhere that when you have less to lose, you tend to lose slower. I started atkins in the middle of June, and am now nearly at my goal weight. So, I lost about 14 lbs in 1.5 months. After I had my son last year, I just could not get rid of my tummy. I couldn't believe how my tummy just melted away in front of my eyes after starting Atkins. Can't believe I went from a size 6 to a size 2 in 1.5 months.
Now, to answer your question - I really didn't watch calories. At the beginning, I used fit day to help keep track of my carb intake and realized that I was eating anywhere from 900 - 1300 calories a day. I just was not that hungry, so I only ate the amount of calories that I needed to not feel hungry. Most days, I ended up eating around 1100 calories. I was on strict induction for two weeks, and than for the rest of the time and currently, I've added other foods, but have kept my carbs at around 20 a day. Hope I answered your questions. If you have others, feel free to post them.

What are the implications of an addiction to Atkins ice cream?
Can the human body survive off nothing else except Atkins ice cream & vitamin supplements? Four boxes per day = 2080 calories. Four boxes plus a little protein each day… That’s just about right… Except for the fact that it would cost $600 per month for the ice cream!
Am I in trouble? Are there any “ice cream anonymous” groups forming anywhere?

I tried the Le Carb ice cream and yogurt. The ice cream has 3 or 4 net carbs per 1/2 cup - which means if you want to pig out and eat the whole thing it won't destroy you. The consistency is like "real" ice cream. I tried the chocolate almond and there were plenty of almonds. There was an odd undertone that reminded me of shredded wheat cereal, but it was better than I expected. There is vanilla, lemon and cinnamon also. I bought it at Wal Mart here in Texas. It is also available at Brookshires and Ole. I also tried the Le Carb yogurt - 4 oz. at 4 carbs. It is tasty, but 4 ounces isn't much. The strawberry had real chunks in it. It is expensive - .99 for 4 ounces. It is available the same places. They are both sweetened with Splenda so there is not the sugar alcohol problem.

Oh yes! if you liked the lemon custard, you will like the lecarb lemon. Now, if you eat if straight from the freezer, it's a little icy, but if you let it sit out for maybe five to ten minutes, WOW! it's great. I sometimes put a little sugar free chocolate sauce on it, and that's good too. I guess I'll try the cinnamon, now that someone has recommended it. I bought "Moose Tracks" which is vanilla with sugar free peanut butter cups, and sugar free Moose Tracks fudge. 1/2 cup has 4 g carbs and 8 g fat. All I can say is, "OMG" I would eat this stuff even if I wasn't low carbing. It is really, really, REALLY good! The only problem is, it's hard to take only 1/2 c. I admit I went overboard yesterday and kept dipping into it, but I have control back today and will limit myself from here on out to 1/2 every other day. It will make it more of a special treat.

I found thier web page at http://www.pierres.com Unfortunetly there are no retailers in my state. It looks like it's mostly in the New England states and around that area so far. It does give the option to order online. 3 gallons are $79.95 but that price also includes shipping and handling. Considering the Atkins site charges an additional $50 or there abouts for cold shipping, that's not to bad.
The Slender comes in 8 flavores including :
Butter Pecan
Carmel Pecan
Chocolate
Crunchy Peanut Butter Cup (I want I want I want)
Moose Tracks (I want too)
Neapolitan
Strawberry
Vanilla
90-130 calories*
4-8g total fat*
3-4g dietary fiber*
14-17g total carbohydrates*
* per 1/2 cup serving
(depending on flavor)
I'm not seeing the 4g carbs you listed, it looks like the lowest it goes is 10 net carbs per 1/2 cup.

Sorry to torment you LadyBelle but the Crunch PeanutButter Cup is wonderful. Do you have a Kroger subsidiary near you, that is where I found it in Indiana.

There are sugar alchohol carbs, too. I was wrong with the 4 g. of carbs - once I deducted the fiber and sugar alcohols it was 6 g per 1/2 cup. Still not bad for a once in a while treat.
Sorry for the mis-information. When I went home and looked at the package I said, "Whoops, gotta go back in and remedy that tomorrow."

My kroger doesnt have the tortillas or le carb at least I can't find it. But I did find Pierres Slender low fat ice cream at Krogers. It has 8 net carbs for 1/2 cup. And they had moosetracks, butter pecan and others. I bought neopolitan . That and the plain flavors had the least carbs. Yummy. I am eating it right now.

This stuff is wonderful and could be better if someone could answer an Atkins question. The glycerin is 2 grams. I have heard that you subtract that. Is this correct ?

Yes you can subtract glycerin and sugar alcohols.

But sugar alcohols are notorious for stalling people. So if your losing comes to a halt, consider avoiding the products with sugar alcohols.
