My sister has been telling me that I would like soy milk--and
that it would be much, much better for me than even skim
milk(cow's milk). Is soy milk generally considered a healthier
alternative to cow's milk? Does it taste good on whole grain
cereal that isn't sugar-coated?

Thanks in advance for any info that you guys can offer me
regarding soy milk!

The reality is that milk, soy and wholegrain cereals aren't
particularly healthy.

The wacky Kellog brothers (certifiable nutters) started the
breakfast cereal craze and did the world a great disservice in
the process.

Fruit (not fruit juice)and cold meat is a much better
breakfast than cereal. Take a lesson from the Amish and make
breakfast the main meal of the day.

I prefer rice milk; soy milk gives me a scratchy effect in my
throat. Many people have digestive sensitivities to cow's
milk so using either goat or alternative milks might be an
option. Try it for a couple weeks on your cereal and see how
you feel about it.

You could always buy some to taste it and read the label to
find out its nutrient profile. Be aware that there are various
varieties (may be sweetened or not, flavored, etc.). In
non-aseptic packaging, soy milk spoils quickly, but is much
less expensive.

I am intolerant to a number of foods, in particular soy
products, gluten, etc. and the consequence of eating them over
a long time is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. If I do unknowingly
eat soy products as when they are blended with something else,
a scratchy throat, therefore the urge to drink frequently when
not thirsty, is one symptom. The other is a swollen tongue
that causes difficulty in speech (hard to articulate words
clearly) and in swallowing. Finally the stomach feels and is
bloated although it feels "empty" at the same time as if I
hadn't had a full meal. The symptoms clear in a day or two if
I avoid my intolerance foods.

Thus if you enjoy soy milk and have no side effects, go ahead.
Being an oriental I used to love soy based food products. But
there is no special nutritional advantage in soy.
