Anyone out there have stomach problems & doing low-carb? My brother is about 40lbs overweight. I got him to try low-carb & he was practically living in the bathroom, now he's on Weight Watchers & not seeing much improvement. Any suggestions on foods or supplements he could try, would be greatly appreciated.

hiya Jade,

When I hear stomach problems, I think of belching, heartburn, indigestion and reflux ... these problems are all helped by low-carbing. Insulin stimulates the release of increased stomach acid; reducing insulin levels with LC will result in less acid. :)

On the other hand, I think you may be referring to intestinal problems such as diarrhea or constipation??

Yes, this can happen to anyone whenever there's a change in diet. It can happen no matter what the diet is changed to. If your brother was previously eating a lot of low-fiber starches such as white bread, white flour tortillas, rice krispies, white rice etc .. sweet juices with no fiber .. and very few vegetables, then switching to a less processed diet with salads and vegetables can cause diarrhea till the system adjusts. Other folks experience constipation due to the decreased volume of food (natural meats and fats leave very little residue after digestion).

There's more info. and helpful suggestions in the article Low Carbing and Intestinal Health, which you can find by clicking on Low Carb Tips from the orange menu bar at the top.

Hi Jaden,
I had that problem too, I think maybe I was eating too many veggies. I found that the days I ate more meat and less veggies, I was pretty normal. A couple of times I have slipped off of Atkins, as soon as I got back on, I think I was in the bathroom in the bathroom more than I wasn't!
