Just a thought:

I've noticed that many of the veterans here (and the Low-Carb books) emphasize that this way of eating is not about losing weight. If anything, it is about gaining health and losing inches.

Why not replace the "We've lost...pounds" counter at the top of the forum page with a "We've lost....inches"? In fact, I think an "inches before-now-goal" counter would be appropriate for our profiles (and perhaps dress size for women).

I think the "We've lost....pounds" gives the wrong message, not only to ourselves, but to new members, and especially those who know very little about this way of eating.

Perhaps then we can shake this "weight" obsession and focus on overall health.

Just a thought. Would love to hear you'all's opinion.

Best,
Mark

Hi!

Very interesting thought. :)

The whole problem with dress sizes is that they are not standardized. The "cheapy" stores that mass produce "trendy" clothing for teens tend to have bigger sizes on smaller clothing (and to be quite honest I don't know how a lot of the kids these days find clothes to fit??), whereas more expensive lines tend to make their smaller sizes much more "generous" to cater to the consumer and make them feel good enough to fork out the bucks. The moral of this story is that if I want to drop 2 sizes all I have to do is to shop at a different store. :D

I think you are on to something here, although in the end couldn't an unreasonable dress size (or waist measurement) be just as unhealthy as an unreasonable weight?

Very good point about weight being an "obsession." Although it tends to be the ones that get the obsession under control that succeed in overall health and weight loss, while those who continue to obsess and look for the quick fix continue to struggle. ;)

Actually the "we've lost....lbs" is pretty misleading too. There are many people here that put a few pounds back on and don't adjust their stats, as well as those who showed losses and no longer post here anymore and may have completely regained their weight and then some. I don't know how many people put much stock into it. Goodness only knows how many members' losses are incorporated into that number.

You've got a great outlook. Thanks for the point to ponder! I can't wait to hear what other people think.

All the best,

KC

How about a "We've regained our sanity!" counter?

Works for me! ;)

I am extremely disappointed that this thread has been relegated to the "Tech" area. This is not a technical question or comment about the website.

This is a rather important and far-reaching question about how we approach the whole issue of Low-carb. About how we view ourselves and what we are doing here.

I believe the authors of Protein Power spent a good page or two explicitly saying to STOP THINKING IN TERMS OF WEIGHT LOSS.

Indeed I think many of the journalers here become unnecessarily anxious about their weight. I've read so many threads where people are beating themselves up about not losing 1 or 2pounds in spite of losing 1 or 2 inches.

I really think we should discuss this as a general health issue and not as a "tech" question.

Please place this thread back where it belongs (O minor god of thread movers)!

Thank You,
Mark
