Hi

I am new to this group and was hoping someone could point me
in the right direction.

My husband, because he got out of breath at the slightest
exertion, just had blood tests. His haemoglobin levels were
extremely low. The doctor is trying very hard to get him a
colonoscopy sooner than the huge wait times we have here in
Canada. In the meantime he told him to take iron and vitamin
C. I was wondering if there was an iron supplement better than
another for absorption.

Can anyone point me to a good website where I can get accurate
information? I have done a google search and there are
differing opinions but I have no idea whose opinions I should
be respecting.

Thanks for any help!

If his "IRON" is low then that may be the thing to take but if
not or anyway take B12 and Branch Chain Amino Acids to aid the
creation of haemoglobin.

Need to find the source of the depletion

Since 'anemia of chronic disease' presents with the same ..
low hemoglobin .. I would be darn sure I actually DO have iron
deficient anemia BEFORE I followed any advice about
supplementing iron.

Supplementing iron when one has an underlying disease
which is sequestering the iron .. has been known to hasten
ones demise ..

But that is just me ..

His iron is low.

Do you think he should be taking this as well? If so, we go to
the doctor on Tuesday and I'll ask.

Yes. The first thing is doing a colonoscopy. There is such a
waiting list here. They are trying to rush it. I wanted to
make him more comfortable as he waits. Now a few steps will
have him out of breath.

I had been taking ibuprofen for several weeks and my blood
test came up with a low iron reading. My doctor wanted me to
have a barium enema which invlved a lower G.I. Series. I
didn't want to go through that until I tried taking iron
supplements. He said it was okay to try that. I took an Iron
Complex pill for a few weeks and everything was back to
normal. I don't have the bottle any more but rememer it was
called Iron Complex.

Has your husband been taking any meds which might cause
internal bleeding?

The B12 he may have heard rumours about but you may have to
explain to him what a BCAA is. They aid in the metabolic
pathway converting iron to haemoglobin.

My wife almost killed herself with iron from doctors pumping
her full of iron for years until we did some research and
found these other cofactor nutrients. For 3 years after when
she stopped taking the cofactors for a few weeks her thighs
where she got the iron shots would bruise up badly.

Best of luck with this!!!
