Sorry, yet another question... In Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution book (page 97) he has a list of vegetables that he says are "10% carbohydrate or less" ...my question is, 10% of what? 10% of my daily allowence? Does that mean I can have 10 portions of any of these items? He says 'asparagus' but not how much asparagus....can I eat a truck load of asparagus? Does he mean that 10% of the vegetable is made up of carbohydrates? Can he be any less informative? hahaha sorry must be that sugar craving anger kicking in.

Any help would be appreciated (sorry for all the posts)

I would think it means that 10% of the vegetable is made up of carbohydrates and the rest is water and fiber. (I guess this because you mention asparagus, for which that percentage sounds right.) Never actually read Atkins yet so I couldn't tell you for sure. (I'm diabetic and do Dr. Bernstein's diet, btw.)

Tina, within a page or two (if not on the same page) there will be advice on how much of the different kinds of vegetables (5%, 10%, etc.) to consume and at what "stage" of the Atkins plan.

It's in there. Take a deep breath and look back in The Book :)

Your right islandgirl, on the previous page he says "you can have 3 cups of salad vegetables or 2 cups of salad vegetables plus 2/3 cup of any vegetable listed under 'vegetables w/10% carbs or less".....thanks for the adivce to back and read, guess that lack of sugar has me a bit on edge.

Thanks to you too, DebDaCajon. I've heard a lot about the Dr. Berstien diet, too...just saw the Atkins book first hahaha.

Can either of you recommend a book that lists the carbohydrates in foods?

Thanks,
Tina

hi Tina,

Me again, just happened to be online and well, here I am .. :D

Corrine Netzer's "Complete Book of Food Counts" is excellent, and very complete, contains counts for carbs, fiber, protein and fat, etc... also includes brand names and some fast foods too. The 2000 edition is $7.50 US / $9.99 Cdn. Worth it.

Online you can use the USDA nutrient database, http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/cgi-bin/nut_search.pl -- you just type in the food name, and away you go.

I'm impressed that you're doing all this AND packing AND moving with 2 kids, one of 'em 2 yrs old. It's my guess you're going to be very successful .. ;)

Hey Doreen! I went straight to Amazon.com and ordered the book and I added the web site you gave me to my favorites list....more reading... hahaha. If only Stephen King or Dean Koontz would write a LC book I would be in great shape!

I figure if I can keep up with this diet, with all that I have going on right now, then I can keep it up for the rest of my life. BTW, I took the girls to Burger King last night and I didn't even sneak a french fry...I was so proud of myself.

Thanks for the info on the book and web site! Your the greatest Doreen!

Couldn't you just imagine it? .... As the single working woman sleeps .... the Doritos in the cupboard come to life in the dark of night ... writhing their way off the shelves .... emitting ultra-frequency signals to the half-empty chip bag and stale donut remains that litter the coffee table.

Up the stairs, into the bedroom, under the covers of our dreaming woman .... they wreak their damage -- choking and suffocating every cell in her body ..... She wakens abruptly ... sits bolt upright then flings back the covers to see ..... to see.... NO! not that! anything but THAT! .... cellulite .... AAaaaccckk!

The food police are called ... lowfat diets embarked upon ... still the ravaging continues .... until Sommers Atkineades arrives, unannounced -- on the run from hitmen hired by the Sugar Mob, who he was accused of toppling singlehandedly .. to save the thighs and abdomens of the nation.

Phew .... I need another coffee after that! .. :o

Oh, Doreen, that was so funny! When do we get the next installment? Shall we open a new thread: Light Reading?

**************************

In the style of Jane Austen:

Pensively, Dorothea studied her mirrored reflexion. Swanlike shoulders, columnar neck, lofty forehead, and, of course, those fine Spanish eyes . . . but what was that, marring the fine line of her jaw? A little moue of dissatisfaction crossed Dorothea's lips at the sight of the small pouch of flesh beneath her chin. Sighing, she rang the bell for her maid. Oh, when would dear Mr. Banting return?

Now you see, Doreen, I said you should write a LC book! I will never again, for the rest of my life, look at a bag of Doritoes in the same way again....you have converted me (and terified me)! LOL

Rachel, I'm not much of a Jane Austen fan...but after reading your installment, well I might just have to check out some of her work!
LOL

Boy, Doreen swayed me away from Doritos and Rachel ran me in the direction of yet another great author....one saving my body the other my intellect! What power ya'll have!

Thanks for the laugh guys...I needed it!

Hi Doreen :D :D :D

Ooh Doreen I am laughing so much my fingers won't stay on the keyboard ! ;)

So this is how the Lighter Side was born. Wow ! Just awsome. I've read almost all the posts there and responded and created some of my own but this one ........ well this one just beats them all. It should definitely not be in an obscure place like this one.

I've just had an idea. I am going to copy it and post it to the Lighter Side.

COLOR=red]Thanks Doreen for giving me a major stitch in my side from LOL.

You are the bestest best.[[/COLOR]
