Does anyone use Diet Power to keep record of what is eaten
throughout the day? If so, how well does it work for you?

Thanks Nancy

It works well for me. I like it because it tracks things like
potassium, magnesium, etc as well as calories, fat, carbs, and
protein. It is fairly easy to customize most of it to a
low-carb diet, but it is obviously geared towards low-fat. I
think the only thing I haven't been able to change is
right-clicking on a particular food will give you fat content,
but not carbs and protein. It allows you to add your own
recipes and quick foods.

One thing I don't like is that I haven't figured out a way to
view a detailed (with carb, protein, fat breakdown of each
food) layout of what I've eaten for the day without printing.
If I could get that to just come out on the screen, I'd be
very happy. Those pie-charts could use up lots of color
printer cartridges.

I think they have a lengthy trial period with the option of
extending the trial at no cost if needed. I recommend you
use it a few weeks getting it customized to your needs
before deciding.

Greetings all,

I prefer BalanceLog, for two reasons. First, it does not
require a network connection. Second, and this is the big one
for me, it comes with a PalmOS version, so I can record meals
and workouts in my PDA when I dine out and/or travel, and then
sync them later. For me, this is a godsend.

The only problem I have with BalanceLog is that it only stores
carb data in integer values. So an egg, which has .6 carbs, is
listed as 1 carb. Those tenths of a point can make a
difference on induction. Even so, I'm extremely happy with the
program, and would recommend it to anyone.

You can check it out at www.healthetech.com

Best of luck to you all,

I like Diet Power because it's very adaptive and easy to
customize.

You can enter your own recipes, indicating how many servings
it makes. You plug in all the ingredients. Then the next time
you want to enter that item, you can just drag it into your
daily entry. A box pops up, allowing you to describe how many
servings you had.

I use this feature to plug in combined entries that make my
life a lot easier. For instance, most workdays I have a 2 egg
omelet (2 eggs, 1 sl cheese) plus coffee (coffee +half and
half + Sweet n low). Rather than continuing to drag all these
items each time I want to register my breakfast, I make up a
"recipe" called "Two-egg cheese omelet with 2 cups of coffee"
and BAM! just drag the one item for my whole breakfast.

I use the Quick Food feature for items not found in the
database and for which I have a nutrition label. I input
all the details from the label and then tell it to add it
to the database.

You also have a "Favorites" area, where you can drag items
you eat have on a regular basis, like Diet Pepsi Caffeine
Free, 12 oz.

How is it adaptive? Well, when you set your goal, it comes up
with a budgeted amount of calories you are permitted for each
day. If you are steadily losing on larger amounts of calories,
it "learns" and gradually increases your calorie budget.

Fitday does this for free. Have you done a detailed
comparison?

I much prefer Diet Power because is is fast. I can slam in my
menu in a few seconds. With FitDay, I feel like it is wait...
wait... wait... and I have a fast cable connection. I don't
know how people can use it. MHO

Yes. I prefer Diet Power. If for no other reason, it's faster
(no waiting on slow internet response), more private, under my
control and always accessible. Besides, I paid for it long
before Fitday existed, so I might as well use it.

I downloaded it and tried it and didn't like it very much.
Ran into a few bugs in the software (the exercise function
didn't work right), and when I complained about it, I got a
brief message saying they were aware of the problem and
working on a fix, and that they would e-mail me when it was
available. Never heard from them again. It's kind of an
expensive program, so I didn't want to pay for something
which I already knew wasn't working right. They might have
fixed the program by now (this was in June that I downloaded
it), but like I said, I didn't hear from them about it. Kind
of put me off. Oh, I also got a lot of junk mail from them
which took a while to stop.

I figure anything accessible from the internet has a strong
possibility of not always being private. Honestly, most of the
time I really don't care about that aspect of it. As far as
accessible, as long as I can get to one of my computers, I
have access. In the short time I was using Fitday, there were
at least two extended (more than one day) outages.

>Do you not need an internet connection for it?

No internet is needed once you have downloaded the
software. I run two copies -- one on my home computer and
one on my laptop. The data is easily transferrable with a
floppy or zip disk.

>How is it more controlled by you? Is it more customizable?

Barbara pointed out the most useful ways to customize in
her post. I really find Diet Power to be so much faster
than Fitday.

Diet Power also has a search feature that I haven't found on
Fitday. If you're looking for foods that are rich in a
particular nutrient, such as potassium, you can list foods
from the database with those richest in the given nutrient at
the top of the list. I've found this helpful a few times.

There are a few things I don't like about it -- one is the
inability to just add calories (I have a heart rate
monitor that approximates the calories) for exercises.
There are a few more, although the new version is
definitely nicer than the old.
