After falling off the induction wagon (again), I am now officially back on and ready to get the show on the road.
I have a question, though, that I haven't seemed to be able to find the answer for in the Atkins book. It's probably there and maybe I overlooked it, but what I am curious about is why are certain low carb things (nuts, certain veggies, avocados, pork rinds, etc.) not allowed on induction? I mean, what difference does it make as long as the carb count stays below 20? Please enlighten me!!!!!

It has a lot to do with the GI (Glycemic Index) of foods. Some veggies, nuts etc have a higher index rating even though the carb counts "seem" to be in range.
GI determines the food's sugar impact on your insulin levels. The higher the number, the more likely it is to trigger insulin release.
Induction is to help you break the carbohydrate addiction by limiting and controlling insulin. This is why the good doctor tries to keep us on certain foods during that two weeks to help settle out our systems.
Hope that helped

Ahhhhhhh, now I see. But, ok....let me ask you this. What happens if I were to decide to forego induction and just limit carbs....basically keeping to the Atkins list of allowable foods. Would I still lose weight, even though maybe at a slower pace? As you can see, I am fighting induction tooth & nail! Every time I've started, I quit after a few days because of feeling like crap and I just throw in the towel (yes I know...weak weak weak) But right now I actually do believe I can do induction if it's vital to how this woe works. Since you're from Dallas too, you know how much cooler it was this morning (finally)? Well, I tried on some of my "fat" clothes from last fall and they are now about 2 sizes too small and I was mortified...I think I have been in denial about how much weight I have actually gained, thinking nobody would notice (HAH).

Atkins considers that Induction is the way to begin. It is one way of losing a fair amount of weight in a short time which is the MOST ENCOURAGING thing that can happen to a person. The downside is that the carb withdrawal is more difficult to stand than other plans. It is said that Day Three is longer than the rest of the week. :p But if you get through it, things are SO much better.
That said, perhaps you should investigate the plans that start at a higher carb level. Protein Power Plan has 2 levels: 35 and 55 grams of carbs. They do not look to have ketosis happen strongly and dont test for it. Then there's the Zone or Sugar Busters. Each is different. Look at the right side of this page and click on "which LC plan is right for me". That will help you decide.
If you cut out the starches, sugars, processed foods and fast foods, you will almost certainly lose weight AND be more healthy. After all, it's up to you which plan you decide to do, or adapt to suit you.

Barb, that does make sense. Maybe I need to get on another plan like Sugarbusters or CAD. The Zone and Protein Power sound way too complicated for me to figure out. My boss (who is same age, same height & weight as I am) just completely cut out starches, processed foods, bread, pasta, sugar - basically low carb although she didn't follow a specific plan. She's lost almost 20 pounds and is still losing.
