Ok, I'm a 26 year old male, 5'11'' high, 240 lbs.. I've read
enough about overweight and obesity and have decided to lose
weight! My goal is to go down to the "healthy" weight for my
age which is 170 lbs (means I need to lose 70 lbs)...

So, I am doing 2 things: 1) Reduce the amount of food I eat...
I stopped eating meat, but I do eat a lot of rice (what else
do you get in India ?), veggies, fruits. Not much cheese or
other fats...
2) Workout at the gym (there's this new machine called Precor
EFX elleptical crossramp that I use for 60 minutes every
day, weight loss program). The machine says I'm spending
~700 calories at the end of my 1 hour workout.

The question is, am I on the right track ? Should I be doing
other forms of exercise instead of just aerobic to lose fat ?
I'm sick of my huge belly (waiste size is 41) and want to go
down to ~34. What type of exercise is recommended for that ? I
not only want to lose weight but want to get my body to a
decent shape........

If anyone can share their experiences with weight loss (what
have you done, how much did you lose, how long it took), it
will be very useful....

Thanks!!!!

The three thing you need to consider are Diet Aerobics
Weights/resistance

700 calorie burn is equal to a 60 minute 4mph walk on flat
terrain which, if your machine is honest, is telling you

<http://www.bodytrends.com/products/elliptical/efx523.htm> The
machine you speak of seems to be a walking/step machine of
some type? If you can keep this up every night trying to
increase your performance say 20% effort in first month then
by 10% in second month and maintain this (sounds like right
track) Adding resistance training would be a big plus

If you go to a Gym speak to the Qualified Trainer there and or
ask around for references for a good one (they should be able
to give personal accurate advice to you)
<http://www.geocities.com/petzlx/Diet.htm> Good plain talking
advice on diet is at that (my) web page

My opinion is you need to keep your eyes on calories (its
not what you eat but the calories you consume *be* honest
with amounts)

Your calories need to be around 18000 a day to get to 170 lb

walking/jogging 5 miles (8 kilometres) in one hour that will
burn on flat ground 1200 kcal (start off slow but be vigorous
in walking this route get a surveyors wheel to measure route
exactly and time yourself)

Er, I think Petzl meant 1800 a day....

And keep in mind that as your weight goes down, if the
distance and duration stay the same this calorie expenditure
will decrease. Why? Because you weigh less so less energy is
required to move you that far. So you'll need to keep upping
the ante to burn the same number of calories.

Thanks Denise and Petzl for great suggestions.... at this
time, I am unable to run/jog on the street for a long time I
guess because of my heavy weight, thats why I chose to use
the elleptical, once I get down to say about 200, then I want
to stop this and run instead, I love that (fresh air, nice
views ..etc).

Thanks and yes you are correct 1800 a day. Really diets need
to be checked over by Dietician and kept balance there are
also tricks for keeping "full" by eating things such as zero
calorie jelly as desert

Do not underestimate the power of walking for a distance! Go
with as much effort as you can safely muster *Walking can burn
more calories than running* with far less impact (any aches or
pains slow down and or stop)

Always over time with any exercise try to increase the
exertion this will keep increasing your fitness

(snip) Just on my way out the door and wanted to toss this in:
Its true that your calorie expendature will go down as your
body adapts more to the eliptical trainer and you will need to
kick it up a notch over time, but dont dispare, I remember
being told this a while back and thinking "god, then in a year
Ill be on the trainer for 3 hours?!" I'd recommend using a
certain type of exercise for a month or so, then switching to
a new one (it keeps your body guessing as to what is going on
and continues to force it to adapt in different directions) of
coarse this is just some advice from my personal experience
and you should ALWAYS consult a physician or trainer.
