I want to lose some weight; im about 2 stone (cant convert)
overweight for my height (5'7 - im about 13 stone). i also
want to get fit, althogh not to superhuman levels - ive no
wish to join the olympic team.

i asked my dr for some advice, he said 'just start running
slowly' - and thats about it. what i need to know is, for a
beginner who is pretty out of shape, how to start running
safely and realistically.

A stone is 14lbs. or 6.4kg

In olde England animals were weighed in pounds and humans
in stones.

You might try lurking in alt.running or follow any number of
training regimes on the internet and books on running.

You may not want to be a mountaineer, but the training plan
would be good for anybody who is interested in loosing a few
stone here and there.

Note that they agree with your physician. Run/walk in the
first couple of weeks. The discomfort you will feel from your
chin to your toes will go away about 3 weeks into the program.
If you have knee or foot pain that does not go away in two
days, reduce or quit running for a period and start up with
less time spent running.

Spend some money on good running shoes first. Go to a running
store or continue to lurk until you get an idea of what you
should be buying.
