Can anyone recommend some good books, videos, websites,
or other instructional material for a beginner on
general fitness?

I am looking for a "routine" I can follow for life for general
overall health & fitness. I'd like more energy, better health,
look better, and feel better. I'm not is bad shape now.

If it also helped my tennis game, that would be a plus.

Seriously, just a basic program that I can start off with
that is safe and effective and that I can then grow into as I
get better.

I'm willing to work out several times a week and I'd prefer to
do as much at home as possible. I'm willing to buy some
equipment, if necessary, but I don't have a whole room to
devote to it.

I'd like as much in the way of detailed step-by-step
instructions as well as clear diagrams as to proper form
as possible.

I'm also willing to consult a local trainer, but I'd like the
study material as well.

Thanks for any help or pointers.

"Your Personal Trainer" by Douglas Brooks, MS, is excellent.

Try Ian King's "Get Buffed" which you can get at his site,
www.getbuffed.net I believe. You can't go wrong with that
book. It's definitely worth the thirty bucks or whatever he's
charging for it. Also, many of his programs are available for
free at www.t-mag.com. Just search for Ian King.

Local trainers range from excellent to utterly useless. I
would do a little reading before going in. At most, I would
simply ask them to demonstrate exercises that you aren't
already familiar with.

Good luck,

BTW, besides his MS in exercise physiology, Douglas Brooks is
a long-time member of ACE, IDEA, ISTA, ACSM, and NSCA. The
fact that he has two certs you do admit to being okay along
with one you think sucks ought to really fry your brain. He
has more credibility in his pinky than you will ever have. Eat
your heart out Mr. Credential Jealousy.

Two are worthwhile, the rest are crap.

See above. He can take his MS and put it up against my
doctorate any day he wants. When the laughing stops, Brooks
can then go write another worthless book and sell it to
wannabe strength trainers like you.

You really expect us to believe you have a doctorate just
because you said so in this sentence, when you have very
notably not answered anyone's request for your qualifications
or offered any original thought. You're a laugh a minute.
