Hello there!

My brother is 292 pounds - 6ft 34 yrs age. He is getting
aches in his Knee joints.

The most he walks is from parked car to
office/apartment/grocery store.

He has started swimming of late in a local Y (ok its just
since last friday).

We were checking "swimming calories burning" in google and
found that a 180 Pound man burns 11.6 calories per minute
of swimming.

1. How much does a 290 pound man burn in swimming? My
brother's weight catregory which should have been
logically listed is unfortunately not. (we calculated
that it may be around 18.5 cals/min slow crawl swimming
- as it is 11.6 cals/min for a 180 pound man)

2. The Y pool is 25 mtrs in length. What is slow crawl
swim speed?

3. He does 25 mtrs and takes break or few minutes and
return back. He aims very low, of doing some 150 mtrs or
200 mtrs in a 45 min period.

Is it any good? Or should he over stretch? I say low aim
is a crime.

His logic is, I will enjoy and slowly improve my ability
rather than pushing too much and losing interest.

He basically wants to make swimming into fun and
relaxing than an act of exercise and regimen to
lose weight.

I am not sure whether his approach is correct or not.

Since he listens to me occasionally, I want to help him
with different facts.

4. One interesting thing that we found was slow crawl
swimming burns more calories than fast crawl. Wonder why?

thanx for all those who can guide.

Jour brother is, in my opinio, on the right track. I dont
know the numbers but they dont matter too much. Swimming is
ideal for overweight people. He is right to slowly get into
it, but there is one area in which he must show some
discipline, an that is consistency. Make sure he goes
regularly, an doesnt skip sessions. Regardless of his pace, 3
- 1 hour swims a week over time will benefit him
immeasurably, so stop measurin! ;) Jeffery

PS an here is a tip as well: since swimming will probably tax
his arms an shoulders more than his legs, he can
alternately swim laps, then brace himself in the corner of
the pool an just do different types of leg kicks. When his
legs get tired an his arms rest, back to laps and so on...

I disagree with most of the posts above.

I do not believe that swimming 25 metres, resting for a few
minutes, then swimming another 25m so that he is doing 150
metres in 45 minutes will do him any real good in a cardio
sense, and the calories burnt will be so low that it won't be
noticable. As a result, he will see no gains for his effort
and lose motivation.

If he pushed himself just a little - for example, every time
he sees how many lengths he can do in his 45 minutes and tries
to do a personal best - he would start seeing performance
gains (which are very quick to get from such a low base) which
would motivate him until he sees fitness gains (quite quick)
and then weight loss (will take some time).

Forget about calculating calories burnt through him swimming.
On his current program, most calories would be expended
battling hypothermia (keeping warm) rather than through
mechanical effort.

The "slow crawl burns more calories than fast crawl" sounds
like a version of the "fat burning zone" myth. The best thing
for your friend is to elevate his pulse rate for as long as he
can. This means he is burning more calories. It also means he
will be getting fitter, which will enable him to swim faster,
which means he will burn more calories ...

The joke of writing with an accent is wearing thin! Your
advice may be OK in this case but remember that how you
communicate is 95% of the message. Bad spelling, bad grammar
signals that you're not educated enough to know what the hell
you're trying to talk about!

Wether ju know it or not, ju are talkin about thermogenesis,
gwere the body burns fat to keep itself warm. Is actiually a
very good way to burn fat. On a hot day, ju can burn more fat
riding around in a cold car than ju can out joggin in the
heat. Befor ju start flamin me, I said burn more fat, not
necessarily expend more enerjy. JJM

Any exercise is good. I have read conflicting reports of
swimming for weight loss. I would suggest expanding to other
activities where not injured such as biking, rowing, etc.

By the way, having been way overweight myself, I would like to
add that uninformed dieting was my biggest problem. I would
even fast once or twice a week and this was absolutely the
worst thing since I was losing more muscle than fat.
