Does anyone know of an easy way to remove gunk from under
one's fingernails? I have this friend with a fingernail
gunk problem, and I am posting this message on this
person's behalf.

Fingernail clippers and/or soap and water?
Seriously, if your friends nails are thick and crumbly, they
are possibly infected with fungus. Are you friend's hands in
water a lot? This can cause fungal nails. If it's just dirt,
then improved hygiene will probably help.
A physician can prescribe medication for fungal nails. Keeping
your hands dry is important.
