Hi

I have recently been suffering from panic attacks, I feel
upset, shaky, sick, faint, breathless and get pains in my legs
and chest. A couple of years ago I collasped in public and
fitted and I had similer symptons then. I went to the doctors
last night and they have prescibed me with Beta Blockers as
well as booking me in for blood tests, I have read a few
articles on them and feel panicked about the possible side
effects such as heart failure. Should I really be taking these
and what are the alternatives?

Thanks

J

Hi Jan,

I've been dealing with panic attacks for 13 years. Beta
Blockers are a safe medication that calms the nervous
feelings. You need the blood test done since there are some
physical conditions that can cause panic attacks. It will take
a few months to sort out the cause of your attacks. You can
email me for more information or with questions.

Dwight: Some take large doses of inositol to prevent panic
attacks. There is some clinical work on the subject. The
subjects took 18 grams per day. (Some say a dose of 9 grams
will work for the prevention of panic attacks.) Of course that
may not be all that is going on. Do a Medline/PUBmed search on
my suggestion before you talk to doctor again. Then again do
you have heart disease?

Thanks for your reply, I find it reassuring that someone
knows what I am talking about. My family and friends can not
really grasp how they make feel and think I am making it all
up, but like you I had my first attack when I was 10, 12
years ago. I went through the routine tests then but nothing
was found and they put it down to heat stroke. I went for
years with no trouble after that and then 2 years ago I had
another bad one when I collasped in public. I was referred to
the hospital for tests and was told that I was suffering from
panic attacks and that I would grow out of them! Since then I
can not shake them off, I was even becoming quite confident
but this past couple of months have just taken that back out
of me. I dont like going to concerts and anywhere to crowded
in fear of having an attack.

I tried reading a book called Self Help for your nerves but it
all seems so simple and the situation is made light of. If
they are so simple to control, why am I still having them.?
The doctor stated that the beta blockers would not cure me,
just make them a little less traumatic. Is there anything else
you can recommend, how do you cope?

Thanks for listening, Just talking to someone who knows what I
am going though helps.

Regards

Janine

It's late and I'm beat but I'll get you a little insight now.
Panic and anxiety are different things. People have anxieties
about many things (leaving the house, high places, etc.).
Panic attacks are really called panic disorder. What you need
to know if your problem is neuro chemical or an emotional
issue. If the problem is neuro chemical, the docs have a lot
of meds to play around with. But many of the meds can either
do nothing or make things worse. I'll give you a break down of
meds and their problems soon.

For now, just know that things can and will be much better in
your life. I'll tell you more soon.

Some musicians and sportsman who need a steady hand take them.

What exactly do beta blockers do biologically?

They are antagonists for the beta-adrenergic receptors. There
are three types: 1, 2 and 3. Most b-AR blockers antagonize the
beta1-and/or -2 ARs with varying affinities. (Humans have
fewer beta3-ARs than rodents.) The beta-ARs are ubiquitous,
found on membranes of nearly all tissues in varying densities.
Especially heart, muscle, adipocytes, lung and other smooth
muscle tissue. They even appear on some lymphocytes.

Beta blockers thus block the activity of the catecholamines
(epinephrine and norepi). But the cellular response depends on
the cell type. Therefore, the biological response depends on
the tissue and the pharmacology of the drug.

A benzodiazepine. Addictive. You may find docs reluctant to
prescribe it.

Block sites that adrenaline (epinephrine for the Yanks) acts
on. Lowers blood pressure and calms the "flight" response
among other things. It doesn't block the "fight" response in
those who don't have one :)
