Greetings,
I have tried absolutely all of the PPI drugs. Aciphex made me
VERY bloated and numb, and could not get a lower dosage as
apparently they don't make one. Protonix just plain made me
feel like crap all over. Nexium worked ok but made me feel
quite nauseous. Prevacid seems to work the best of all of them
probly because number one, I can take the lower 15mg tablet
and so I don't get too much bloating because of too much acid
block during the day. I do sometimes feel the stomach
discomfort but do not know if it's the prevacid or just my
stomach acid stuff. Now I have tried some of the H2 blockers.
People and the pharmacist recommended Pepcid, I tried it and
was latterly wired and felt very strange. Next I tried Zantac
and it seemed ok. A bit nauseous after first taking it but not
too bad thereafter. But when taking it RIGHT before bedtime
sometimes I would get VERY strange and overly realistic
nightmares. Almost hallucinating type. So here I am. Have been
thoroughly checked out by my gastro specialist. Endoscopy
biospsies revealed nothing big. She claimed gastritis. I am
extremely lightweight as a man and getting a lot of food in me
is important but feeling the bloating feeling constantly makes
it VERY difficult to keep shoveling if you catch my drift. Any
other H2's that anyone can recommend other than Zantac that
has heard good things about? I need to lick this thing before
I get too damn thin. Preferebly an H2 with VERY low if any
side effects. Thanks!

Unfortunately most H2 drugs will give you loss of appetite.
Some people take them for weight reduction. Some will make you
bruise easily and Zantac in may opinion is the best of the
H2s. I have been taking it for years and not because I want to
but because I have to. I take it they did a H.pylori test on
you? Mine was negative. One good thing about is that
hypersecretion goes down with age.

Dwight speaks: I've taken some of those meds as I've been
bothered by GERD. Pepcid (famotidine) tended to cause me to be
somewhat more prone to headaches. I talked to a fellow who
claimed he could only take Tagamet (cimetidine) as the other
drugs triggered major headaches. Tagamet was not a choice I
would make as it has an estrogenic nature. In larger doses,
men tend to grow breasts.
The different PPI's each affected me a little differently.
Prevacid (lansoprazole)had less acid suppression effect, it
seemed to me. The the other PPI's I tried Aciphex
(rabeprazole)and Prilosec (omeprazole) were more effective.
They both seemed to make the abdomen feel a little tender,
albeit, nothing I couldn't live with. Much better than the
burning all 24 hours of the day and the choking in the middle
of the nite.
I'd think your nutritional status maybe impaired. I'd take a
powerful b-12 supplement along with the rest of the vitamins.
Though I'd think really large doses might cause upset. I
don't know.
Both the H-2's and the PPI's can cause immune suppression. I
suspect Aciphex had this effect on me. A little over a year
ago I found myself taking an antibiotic for a strictly
bacterial infection wnich was not related to any previous
viral infection. My sense of balance was also moderately
effected which is not at all pleasant. It felt like two beers
on an empty stomach without the warm relaxed feeling.
Anyway, I quit the meds. And I have been good but my GERD
suggestions won't help a gastris sufferer. I do take a couple
of grams of MSM so perhaps that helped, again I don't know for
sure. My sense of balance improved very slowly after
discontinuing all heartburn drugs.
I'd think your gastritis would be causing many of the problems
that you correlate to the drugs.
I am not an expert.
