It's me yet again on a quest for more info on Linseed. :daze:
Is it okay to grind up linseed (flax) and use it to make pancakes?
I was asking because there was a recipe for flax porridge, and mentioed not using boiling water so not to damage the good fat properties in it.
Will it make the linseed oils into harmfull ones or just make them less effective ?
All Low Carbing knowledge and wisdom greatfully recieved.

Hi Bungle,
Do you mind if I buddy up with you. I see you are into swimming and as I am aiming to enter a triathlon in the future (either end of this season or early next season) I could do with a few training/technique tips and maybe on-going advice (I have terrible form..) plus I've only been on low carbs for 2 days (I was on detox in July).
I dont know anything about Linseed Oil I'm afraid.
Zz :daze: om
P.S. My real name is George, so that should provide some amusement..

Hi Zzoom, (aka George)
Yeah, I'm happy to Buddy up with you.
Can't say that I'm gonna be much use in the swimming advice area though
:daze:
As I'm more of a 'taught myself' type swimmer you does it just for fun really, and to mainly get bit of exersise.
Breast stoke is my swimming stoke of choice at present, until I actually master front crawl and minimise all the water that I tend to breath in or drink.
Doing a triathlon is deffinately a great goal to aim for though, especially as you have to be compitant in the three disaplines.
Anyway,
Hope the Low carbing is going well after the major detox plan :)

Can't give you a definite on this one, but from what you said I think that the heat effects the oils so that the bonding within the molecules changes, a bit like the way they do when they make margarine and you get polyunsaturates, which are not considered particularly healthy. I therefore suspect that the oils will be less effective, some of the properties in some of the fats having been destroyed.

Thanks, Little Ann.
I see what you mean.
I shall have to have a little play around with the ingredients to get a super dupa tasting pancake with maximum benefits from the contents.
If not then it's flax pncakes now and then instead.
:)

I grind a mixture of sesame seeds, flax seeds, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds. It's best to do this in small quantities that can be used up fairly quickly so that the oils that are released are still fresh.
Then add a tablespoon of the ground seeds to Protein shakes.
Or use it as breading when baking/grilling beef burgers/chicken.
Because sesame seeds are so small, they often pass right through your system without getting digested. Tahini (an oily paste made from sesame seeds) is better to actually get all the benefit from Sesame seeds.
Take care,

Hi Bungle
How are you doing? I had a nightmare weekend - visitation from half my family!
Are you keeping up with the LCing!!? I had a near dodgey day yesterday as I had two burgers with bread baps - I had no idea there was so many carbs in a small bap!! However, I think (hope) I got away with it..
Just got back from my longest training run in a month (50 minutes; still less than 5 miles tho), Reckon it would take me 6 hours to do a marathon at that pace if I didnt keel over first (which is more likely). The only reason I kept going was because I was listening to a walkman!
Hohum, thats me for now..
Zzzom.
P.S. Checked out your website... its not my usually my thing but it looked quite interesting. I liked the framed assmblages. Whwer do you get ypur inspiration from for such creativity?
I'm trying to write music and I have effectivley got composers' block at the moment. Ever heard of a book called The Artists Way? A friend recommend it to me, what do you think?

Hi Zzoom,
The LCing seems to be going okay so far, thanks. It's just a bit of a job changing over to a whole new way of eating, aswell as keeping an eye on those pesky carbs at the same time. But the foods are very filling and I feel so much better and very centred. :D
I've been experimenting with different recipes etc to see what works best for different meals. ( Can't reall y face eggs and bacon for breaky) so seed muffins work well.
Do hope to burger bun fiascoe didn't put out your eating plan too much, it is quite difficult to get to know what has got what in without scrutinizing the packaging, and some times the kind manufacturers don't even bother telling us. It's always a bit ackward aswell well you have visitors etc which either puts out your whole eating plan or means you have to go out to eat. We had some friends to stay at the weekend which I thought might be a bit awkward (not that is wasn't excellent to see them  ) but we ended up having a Bar-B-Q which was ideal really, and I had my frist alchohol in 3 weeks, whcih didn't seem to put the old LCing out.
Anyway, sounds like the old training is progressing
Do you take it in turns to do each of the sports? or just what ever you are felling like at the time?
The nearest I get to triathlon is having to cycle to the swimming pool (I don't drive as such, but am learning), but this is only about 2 miles so not really comparible.
Glad you thought the website was interesting. I find that the best way to work on your art work (what ever it is) is to spend some time out just focussing on that. Have all the things around you that you might need and just see how things go. I use a little sketch/note book to doodle in every time an idea comes to mind, then try to refer back to it when I am having a couple of days or so working on my art work.
But books on the subject of honning creativity might always be helpful just to give you that extra idea about a particular way of working that might get the creative ideas going.
Anyway,
hope the training (all three) keeps going well.
Sorry about the lack of swimming tips, all I can think of is spit in your goggles (prevents misting up).
And most importantly breath inthe air not the water  (I must take my owm advice more often) :)

Hey Bungle
That was really good advice about taking time out to do the artistic thing. I will have to make the time.
Thanks for the swimming tips! Training is still going strong! I have a timetablbe (its in my journal somewhere) - basically I try to swim and run twice a week and cycle at least once. Next step will be actually taking part in a race and it is fair to say I am a bit intimidated about the idea!
How are you getting on with your diet?? Would be intrested tyo know of your recipes, all i seem to be doing is eating meat at the moment (i could murder a fruit salad!! )

Hi Zzoom,
How's it going,
Hope you haven't given into that fruit salad craving :) .
On any other diet other than these low carb ones, such as Old rosemary Connelly or weight watchers would be trying to push friut salads down our necks. It's a funny old world of LCing !
Anyway, actually got out and did a spot of real exersize on thurs day (swimming only 24 lengths  ). I used to go twice a week before starting the LCing but had been soooo tried the first week, and just sooooo busy since. Especially now I'm learning to drive  at long last !
Anyway back to the LCing. I'm not sure how you eating plan differes from the Atkins, but most the recipes I've been using are very low carb (obviously :) ). If you are fed up of meat (probably stating the obvious here, do excuse) eggs are always good, I often use a recipe for baked eggs and chese from Atkins Diet recipe book. Basically 2 eggs, 25g chese chedder type, 50ml double cream and bacon to garnish. Quite filling !.
You are supposed to put the eggs then chese and cream in a ramikin and cook for 20 mins in a 'ban-marie?' (water bath) in the oven, but for spead I cook mine on very low in the microwave. In a micro proof glass, keeping an eye on it non to boil over and prick the eggs, so they don't leave a modern art work inside the microwave :D approx 1.6 carbs per serving. And for the same carbs you can just have an omlette with a chese cream and bacon sauce etc.
Tuna is also a handy option, especially if in oil, more tuna flavour.
For breakfast I have taken to having muffins, which are a hybrid from a waffle recipe somebody posted on the boards and the recipe in my Atkins book.
Use for muffins (which is slighlty kinder on the oils in the seeds)or pancakes by adding extra water.
2 pancakes or 4 medium muffins.
2 eggs
60 gr ground linseed or seasame seeds
1 tbsp double cream
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp all spice/cinnamon
10-30 gr protein powder
25 gr melted butter
6 tsp or equivalent of sweetner.
throw it all to gether and agust the water for the consistancey
required. Muffins need about 20 mins in a 180 degree oven.Paper cases are also good, as it's a washer upper's nightmare trying to get the muffin stuff off of the tin  )
Approx 1.9 carbs per muffin, if the protein powder is o carbs.
Keep in frdge.
Pour cream on the pancakes and butter the muffins yum yum !
It's a bit of a phaff, but nice to get up and just grab some muffins and not have to cook.
Hope some of this babbling might be of use.?.
Also before I forget, have you tried the suger free jelly, it can also be made in to almost trifle by puting in some sweet chese snacks, and fruit pieces (if your car count allows it) and pour cream over. I might even get around to trying it with proper custard one day!.
Keep up all that training! You must have to be very organised to fit it all in?!
Do you have a deadline for the triathlon? or does it run each year and you just chose the time when you are ready to take part?
Anyway,
happy lowcarb cooking

Hi Bungle,
just stumled upon your messages LOL about linseed .
Well can I say that I have learned quite alot about linseed ( Flax seed is a better term ) they are super duper good for you . As you know they provide the essential omega-3 FFA and a very cheap source of EFFA compared to fish oils .
I grind 1 tbl flaxseeds in my morning shake every morning and I also make fab flax muffins for 2 carbs each which I am totally addicted to . I can post these if you want .
Cooking with flax may destroy some of the oils ,that is why it is important to have some of it ground in your shakes . However the fibre that it provides is essential to proper bowel functioning :D and it has negligable amount of carbs .
You can use ground flax to replace flour in baking and to replace bread crumbs in making burgers or meat loaf . I believe it also fries well as breading . So there you are !!
I also drink 1 tbl every day of pure flax oil . So I suppose you can say I am a bit crazy about flax . It is one of natures little wonders .

Rob,
Thanks for the flax seed info
I would also be interested in your flax seed muffin recipe, as I'm always on a quest for the perfect tasting breakfast muffin, and like a spot of baking if nothing else :)
Flax deffinately does sound like a very helpful little food stuff . Next time I run out of cod liver oil tablets I shall change over to flax seed oil !.

Bungle ,
here's my flax muffin recipe ( 2.5 carbs each , maximum )
line cookie tray with paper cups
Dry mixture:
2 scoops whey protein powder ,plain flavour or vanilla
1/2 cup golden flax seeds ( grind these in a grinder)
2 heaped tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt ( I use potassium salt )
1/2 cup AS ( hermasetas not canderel which is not heat stable)
2 generous tsp ground cinnamon
80g unsweetened dessicated coconut ( you can replace this with 2 oz chopped walnuts or any other nuts you fancy for 10g carbs )
mix well
Wet mixture
1 cup water
4 tbl olive oil
2 eggs beaten ( I have replaced 2 eggs with 8 tbl buttermilk for a variation and the buttermilk gives a lovely taste and improves the browning )
1 and 1/2 tbl vanilla flavouring
and other flavouring eg: coconut , almond , banana
add to dry mixture and mix well
add 2 tbl to each cookie cup
sprinkle tops with seeds eg : sesame, poppie or sunflower
bake for 1/2 hr at 175 deg C
mine never last for more than 2 days but they remain lovely and moist after 24 hours
