Hana Hou means "Again! Again! Again!" in Hawaiian. And that is the mantra I have chosen to help me reach my first BFL challenge.
I went to 24 hour fitness in Honolulu yesterday and signed up for a membership. The gym is nice, and has a women's workout area with weights and cardio equipment, and a nice women's dressing room with showers so that I can work out in the morning, and then shower and get ready for work.
Hana Hou Dates: August 5-October28
Gym Days: Monday, Wednesday, Friday mornings.
Home Days: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday.
Free Day: Sunday
I'm excited to get started. I'm planning to go to the gym today to walk through the uppper body workout so that I'll be ready to go full force on Monday, August 5th.
Planning to stick with my low carb WOE, but don't know if I'll have to adjust the WOE while I'm doing the challenge. Advice and feedback is always welcome!

Alright!! :cheer: I love before/after shots. I'm going to post mine, too, if I ever get them developed. :)
You'll see improvements in a matter of weeks. It'll be fun. Sounds like you've done a lot of planning. Good luck!

I saw your screenname and I thought--- wonder if she's from Hawaii!?!?! I am so jealous! I have been there twice and wow! what a beautiful place! One day, I hope to build a home there...when I win the lotto! Have you always lived there?
I was in Honolulu last May and this Feb. Everyone is so nice!!!!!
Anyway, I wanted to stop by and say "Aloha!"
Best of luck w/ your exercising!

Thanks for the encouragement!
Now you see why it's so important for me to get my bod into shape! It's always bathing suit season here!
Have you guys ever done BFL? Did you get good results?

I have never done BFL but we do have a BFL forum here. A lot of people get great results from the program. I do a CKD and thats what works for me. There is a forum for that too.
Take care,

I went to the gym last night, and met with a trainer named Debra, who walked me through some of the exercises that I'll be using during my workouts.
She also gave me the "carbs don't make you fat, and fat doesn't make you fat, what makes you fat is taking in more calories than you burn" speech. She said that if I wanted to continue to eat low carb, then I could add fruit and veggies into the diet, and occasionally have an oatmeal or potato after a particularly heavy workout day.
She recommended, of course, drinking TONS of water, and also recommended keeping my calories around 1500!! That seems low to me, but I'm willing to give it a shot for a week or two. Hmmm...I think I'm going to have to do some experimenting, and see what works for me.
Anyway, I did my first practice work out this morning. Trying to get a feel for what weight is right for me before I start the program on Monday.
Here's how it panned out:
UBWO
Chest:
Ran out of time! Didn't get it in.
Shoulder:
Shoulder press
12x10
10x20x
8x30
6x40
Need to lighten up, and max out at 30. Couldn't finish set of 12 at 40lb.
Lateral raises:
12x30
Back:
Cable rows
12x30
10x40
12x40
40 was max
Biceps:
Alternating curls:
12x2.5
10x5
8x8
6x10
12x10
Could have moved up to 12s for the last set.
Barbell curls/Concentrated:
12x15
Tricep push ups:
12x15
Tricep kickbacks:
12x2.5
10x5
8x8
6x10
12x10
Not sure I'm doing this exercise correctly. Will ask someone to show me next time I do UBWO.
Aerobic: 20 minute Walking between 3.4 and 4.0
Sit ups: 25 Upper body crunches
Showered, left the gym at 7:45, and made it to work on time for the first time in a month! :)
HulaGirl

Well, I definitely think I was doing those tricep kickbacks wrong. My upperbody is sore, naturally from the practice round yesterday, and my triceps are REALLY sore. But also, underneath my tricep, the area from the bottom of the tricep to the elbow is also really sore. So, I'll be using less weight for triceps next time, and also getting somebody to show me how to do the exercise properly.
Biceps are sore, but nothing major, and my back feels tight, but not sore.
I'm happy that I went to do a practice UBWO to determine weight that is right for me. I'll be going to the gym over the weekend to do the same for LBWO.

Hey there Toots :) I just read through your gym log. Loved the bathing suit pic you posted in the other thread. Reading the replies to that poll I'm beginning to think I have a few more than just one secret goal!
If ever you're looking for info on how to do a particular exercise this website is pretty useful Fitsite.com (http://www.fitsite.com/anatomy.cfm) - just pick a body part then choose an exercise. Here's an example of a kickback (http://www.fitsite.com/index.cfm?ContentID=10874&do=detail).
About the carbs and fat and calories - I can tell you from personal experience trying BFL a few different ways, low calorie / low fat in combination with low carb won't work. Can you say 'hungry'? There's a thread in the BFL forum on how to incorporate LC with BFL - you might want to take a read. Intense lifting and the 20 MAS will demand a lot out of you - the rewards are of course, GREAT - but eating to lose fat is very important. I'm sure you'll find that right 'zone' for you. Remember, if it doesnt feel right, it probably isnt :)
Best of luck!

Nat, thanks! I went to the site, and saw the little tricep kickback video with complete instructions! Wowza..isn't technology amazing? It looks like I was doing the exercise correctly. I guess I need to lighten up on the weight a little.
About LCing and BFL. I don't want to give up my low carb WOE. I feel better and sleep better than I have in so long, and have no more heartburn! I'm going to try BFL on a low carb WOE, and see how I manage, with the understanding that after a workout, I can give myself a little carb boost via non low carb protein shake, or a 1/2 cup of oatmeal with a few berries.
If I'm going to get into that bikini by my birthday in January, I better get cracking!
Thanks for your encouragement. Your posts are always fun and informative!

My boobs are so sore from TOM that I forewent the 20MAS, and hiked straight up the trail behind the house at 5:45am. It was super wet and mushy from the rain, and I eventually had to turn back. So, I kept up the walk around the neighborhood.
40 minute brisk walk. Annie in tow.

LBWO
Man, my hamstrings are so weak. I've always known they were, but trying to get through this pyramid workout this morning really confirmed it. I mean, jeez, I've been out of the gym for an hour, and they're already sore! :)
Had a great LBWO this am. Very motivated, because I know that this is going to be the hardest part of this challenge for me. I want to have stronger shapelier legs.
Did decline abs! HOLY COW! That is so hard! But I managed to finish the set.
Took tons of glutamine when I got to work. I got a bad feeling about how I'm going to be feeling tomorrow. Hurts so good, right???

You're going to come to love this little amino acid ;) Glutamine post workout and again before bed - it will help. And all I can add to what you're about to experience tomorrow and the following day? It get's better. Those first workouts are a killer. Stretch as much as possible and don't turn down any free massage offers!

AM Cardio: 30 minute brisk walk around neighborhood. 50% uphill! :)
I will start the 20MAS when TOM departs, and my boobs are not so tender.
Went to meet with the trainer last night. See, 5 training sessions were included in my gym membership. She put all my stuff in a computer, and it spit out a workout plan, a diet plan, and an aerobic plan. But I've already committed to BFL, and am much more excited about the workouts outlined in BFL. So, I asked her to walk me through some of the exercises I was unsure of, and am bringing in my BFL gym logs next time we meet so that she can help me out. If she still insists on doing things the 24 hour fitness way ONLY, then we'll have to break up.
She did show me some killer ab exercises, and moves to help strengthen the hamstrings.
I wrote away for the Official BFL challenge packet yesterday. I'm considering entering.

UBWO
Still sore from LBWO, but made it through my UBWO just fine. Didn't do triceps, since they are still so sore from my session with Debra The Wonder Trainer. Blah!
I was going to write all of my reps and stuff in this journal, but I keep forgetting to bring my sheet into work! Maybe I'll try to catch up this weekend.
Can't believe week one is almost over already. Getting up early wasn't nearly as hard this week as I thought it would me. It's amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it.

I'm starting my BFL program over tomorrow.
I've decided to do the program 100% by the book, eating plan, training plan, the whole shebang.
So, I'm taking last week as a practice week, and officially starting my BFL journey tomorrow as day one.
Hubby is taking pictures of my with a 35 mm camera today, and I sent away for the BFL challenge materials.

Started my BFL program over this morning, and tried hard to hit 10s on all of the body sections. Feel MUCh better about my workout this morning than I did about any of the workouts last week.
First of all, I was more rested. And I took a "free day" yesterday, and ate some complex carbs. Made a huge difference in my energy level this am during my workout.
To answer Nat's question: I've decided to do the BFL program by the book for several reasons.
1) If I am going to put in the hard work to do the BFL training portion to the T, then I don't want to worry in the back of my mind if I would be getting better results if I was also participating in the eating portion too. I'm going to stick to the book for 12 weeks. The low carb WOE will still be there when I'm finished, and then I can decide which works best for me.
2) Compared to the way that Basil and I were eating, the BFL eating program IS low carb for us. It looks like I'll end up eating around 120 g of carbs/day. 6 weeks ago, I drank 160 g of carbs/day in coca cola alone!
3) Structure. I love it. I need it. Especially right now. I'm under a tremedous amount of pressure and stress at work right now. The super structured nature of the BFL training and eating program leave me one less thing to think about right now.
Thanks Nat, it felt good to write all of that down, and talk it out.
LBWO (recorded in my paper notebook, will post online later)
10 minute moderate walk on treadmill
10 minute slow stairmaster

30 minute super fast walking. Had hubby and dog in tow, so didn't really get the 20MAS in, but since Baz walks so much faster than I do, I ended up jogging along side most of the way.
DOMS! Legs hurt! Took glutamine.
Annie was so happy to walk this morning. I think I'll have to take all of my cardio days on the street for her sake.

UBWO...
I heavied up on every body part today, compared to my practice round last week. That felt nice, and was rewarding.
Left the gym shaking and starving! :)
This program takes so much planning, I'm afraid I still haven't had time to post all of my workouts and food stuffs. I may just have to put up a page on my regular website where you can go and peek at PDFs that I can make of the Xcel files I use to plan.
I was exhausted, and didn't want to get out of bed at 5am, but halfway through my bench press set...I was sure glad I did!

Thu, Aug-15-02, 12:46
Oookay! Now I see what the interval training is all about!
HIIT around the neighborhood with Annie. For the first time, I did the intervals. First of all, I am going to have to find a longer route...I was back at my house in 15 minutes...so, I'm going to have to add a block or two to my walk.
It felt wonderful to sprint. To really push my body, and get my heart rate up.
After one practice week, and almost through the first week of BFL, I'm totally digging the program. I'm dead tired by 9pm, and I think my body is adjusting to the different schedule. Sleeping well with no sleep aid, even under tons of stress at work. :)
I can see how and why people get hooked on exercise. I hope I can stick with it. I'm DETERMINED to finish this 12 weeks. And I think I'll start looking for another program to start once this one is complete.
Anybody got any suggestions?
P.S. I still need to drink more water!!

Skipped my LBWO Friday morning due to stress and exhaustion. Skipped my cardio Saturday due to laziness.
Today, did the NYC Ballet Workout. LOVE this tape. Wonderful LBWO with abs, and tons of stretching.
Have completely eaten off the plan all weekend.
I argued with Baz that maybe I should start over again tomorrow as Day 1, since I want to do this plan by the book with no failures for 12 weeks. I love my husband, he is such a supportive optimist. He said "Honey, nobody is perfect all the time. Just start back to your routine with your next meal, and dont' sweat it."
So, I'm going to work hard to plan all of my meals for the week tonight, and hit the gym for my UBWO tomorrow morning bright and early.
itsjoyful
Sun, Aug-18-02, 20:48
If you are expecting perfection, then you are doomed! Do the best you can, and he's exactly right, at the next meal, do it right. Planning will help. I know that when I would eat poorly, it was because we were out, or I was just too lazy.
Sometimes a work out helps relieve stress and missing 'em makes the stress works. Have you considered having mini goals so you can reward yourself after say, a week. Small rewards, but things you normally would not do...or get Baz in on it and get free pedicures! Just a thought!
Peace,
Bren

Yesterday: LBWO New York City Ballet Workout.
Today: 20MAS Yippee...I ran for 3 of my intervals. I haven't picked up the pace to more than a walk in like 10 years! :)
I got really discouraged yesterday, because I haven't lost one pound, and I feel like I've been working so hard. So, I got Baz to take a set of 2 week pictures for me. It made me feel so much better. I definitely see results!
:p

don't ya just hate it when that happens!
I know how you feel about working so hard and not seeing results on the scale. Remember that when your muscles are stressed from the workouts, they will retain water, and it's completely in the realm of possibility that you are gaining muscle and losing fat at the same time.
More power to you for getting the running in. Feels great, huh?

For the first time since starting BFL, I hit my 10s!
I benched 70 pounds this morning!
I am starting to really understand the power of this way of life.
It's motivating on so many levels. Like last night, I stood up for myself with my husband over something that I normally would just slink away from. But I felt this inner voice saying "You're strong! You're kick ass! You don't have to walk away from a comment like that!"
Ahhhh..assertiveness training side effects....

Day 6 Cardio workout: Swimming on the North Shore. Definitely not 20MAS or HIIT, but a nice swim with Baz and Annie.
Recommitting myself to eating clean this week. I must eat clean, if I'm going to lose fat. Packed snacks and lunch for tomorrow. Very squeaky. Except for the butter on my potato. :)
I have 12 weeks before we go to the Mainland for Thanksgiving. I'm determined to show up in the lower 160s. To do this, I have got to get my nutrition under control. No more ice cream snacks on my "Free Day" which turns into a free freakin' weekend.

Week 3! Alright!
LBWO-
Great LBWO, although I had a hard time hitting my 10s on abs. I need to get online, and find some killer ab exercises. Crunches just don't do it for me.
I realized while doing my workout today, that in weeks one and two I skipped an official BFL LBWO BOTH WEEKS! So, I'm going to push myself harder this week, and make sure I get to the gym for every workout this week.
The scale finally moved down a little bit. I've been at 173 for about 3 days. I'm thrilled. That means 169 is just around the corner. And with my new clean eating committment, maybe I'll make it there before Chip and Dave get to town on the 11th.
Tried the straight leg deadlifts, but am not convinced I was doing them correctly. I'll have to check online, and practice at home before Friday.

Today: UBWO
Finished my upper body workout, but didn't hit many 10s. I'm plum exhausted. I could barely get up this morning. I'm going to try to get to bed super early tonight to make sure I get enough rest.
I am so baffled about the nutritional portion of this BFL thing...the clenched fist idea ain't cutting it for me...I need more structure than that, I think...
Argh! Tired. Cranky.

LBWO
Awesome workout today! I really pushed myself. Went up to 60 lbs on leg extensions....really could do more...so, I'll try 70 next week. 120 lb leg press. Can also push this up next week. 60 lb hamstring curls...can't possibly move this one up next week..ouch!
Found a new calf machine.... After the leg work, I felt like I was going to puke. Ahhhhh....
Did decline crunches, and obliques. Did hanging knee lifts! Wow! Love those!
After my workout, I felt great, so I jumped on the treadmill and did a 10 minute HIIT.
I really noticed a difference in the way my body looked and felt today during my workout.
I signed up for a nutritional program designed by Pam Brown to help me kick in gear my nutrition for the last 8 weeks of Challenge 1. She is so inspiring to me.
Off for a 3 day weekend. I promise myself to do both my cardio workout tomorrow, and my Upper Body workout on Monday, even though we're off work. I PROMISE!

Is it week 4 already? Excellent.
UBWO today. I wasn't very focused, but still heavied up on weights, and am still shaking an hour later, so I must have had a decent workout.
Basil and I both went to the gym yesterday for cardio...and to lounge in the hot tub! :) I did a full 20 minute set of intervals. 10 sprints. I am so proud of myself. I've decided that for the last 8 weeks of Challenge 1, I will do all of my cardio in the gym, so that I know for sure that I'm getting full speed intervals in each time.
Start my Camp Pam B. nutrition next week. Looking forward to having structured nutrition as well as workouts. This week I'm updating goals for the last 8 weeks, and at the end of the week, I'll post pictures from the last 4 weeks.

Week 5!
Got up this morning, and did HIIT with Annie in the streets of Manoa Valley.
The running hurts my knees a little. Nothing major, but just a little "Ouch!" every once in a while. Basil says if I'm going to run, then I need to get some shoes designed for running. I guess mine are cross trainers, whatever that means.
I'm going into my last 8 weeks of BFL today, and have finally made a notebook that not only covers my workouts, but I have my menus planned for the next 2 weeks, and I have goals set for each day and each week.
I bought a folder to keep by the bed for the next 8 weeks. In it I put my menus, my workout sheets, and my goal sheets. If I drink all of my water, I give myself a kiss (kiss stickers, of course!), if I eat clean on my menu, I get another kiss. If I hit 10s in my workouts, guess what!? A KISS!
I can't wait to give myself 3 kisses today! :)
My pictures have been really motivating me to push myself futher and further. I know that I can have the body I want. I just have to really want it, and work for it. I've started reading Oxygen magazine for inspiration, and to look at pictures of fit women who actually have set tough goals for themselves and made it happen.
I feel like finding this board, which led me to doing BFL was the best thing that has happened to me in years. Thanks for all of your support, guys. If anybody reads this, consider yourself kissed! :)

Oh boy! Oh boy! I'm gonna be sore tomorrow!
I had a killer upper body workout today. Worked each body part to complete failure. Couldn't finish the lat raises without taking a mini break during the set for a few seconds. Really heavied up on almost everything.
Goals for today:
Water 125 oz (already halfway there before lunch)
Workout: Show up! COMPLETE Intensity! COMPLETE Focus! COMPLETE
Nutrition: NO CHEATS! (Does one dark chocolate espresso bean count as a cheat?? ONE?? I don't think so!! :) )

UBWO at lunch
Could not, I repeat, could NOT get out of bed this morning. I'm still really sore from my LBWO on Monday, and have been sleeping like a Rock. Literally, didn't even hear the alarm go off.
So, I did my UBWO today during my lunch break. It was a little rushed...I skipped my back, but everything else went great.
I'm totally stressed at work. The conference is in 10 days. So, I've been emotionally eating cinnamon buns that are strategically placed around the office. I try to resist, but have given in two days in a row to the cinnamon bun temptations!! Thank GOD I ate the last one :)
My nutrition, as usual, is less than stellar. I keep saying I'm going to clean it up...but I don't. My workouts are intense, and I look and feel great, but I know I could do better if I just ate less junk.
Tomorrow is a new day, and there are no more cinnamon buns. That counts for somethin...
I WILL DO MY INTERVALS TOMORROW NO MATTER WHAT! I WILL SPRINT!

Did my LBWO today, since I'm totally off schedule, and f**ing this whole program up by not sticking to it by the book, but oh well, life moves on.
The LBWO was great! And I wore my heart rate monitor to see what kind of zone I'm in while I'm lifting.
Here are the results of my workout:
Time: 51 minutes 34 seconds (Did 10 minutes of Intervals after my weight workout.)
Average Heart Rate: 141 (Woo Hoo!)
Time In Target Zone: 41 minutes 17 seconds
Calories burned: 425 (wow!)
BMI= 25.7 Overweight...of course
Can I make it through my day tomorrow and be a good little BFL girl? I think I can, I think I can...in fact, I'm gonna go put a sweet potato in the oven right now...
kisses,

It's not the end of the world if we mess up once in a while. All we can do is just move on.
I too have been faltering on my BFL program for the last week. I have not seen the results that you have gotten after only four weeks (quite impressive, you look mahvelous) but I am me and you are you.
I just keep going because quite frankly even if I don't think I see results, everyone else does and I feel fantastic!
Hang in there!

I can't believe I haven't updated since Sept. 23. That is exactly one week before my big conference on the Big Island, and just about the time that the weeks of guests showed up to screw up both my diet and my workout schedule! :)
We have only had 1 car for almost a month, which means no morning workouts for me. Honestly, I think I've worked out twice in the last 2 1/2 weeks. But I was back in the gym today, and feeling great.
I have 6 weeks before I go home for Thanksgiving, and I'm ready to hit the gym hard, and stay away from JUNK. I WILL do it. My goal is to lose 10 pounds by the time we get on the plane. Or to at least drop a pant size or a couple of inches in my waist.
I'll keep you posted.
It's good to be home alone! And great to be back on track.

I have the NYC Ballet Workout too. I Love it.
Its great for building lean muscle without bulkiness.
