How many of us can think back to a single event that shaped the way we thought about food from that point on? Many times we hear that food fills some emotional need and that in order to keep the weight we lose off, we must find that emotional need.

When I was only 12 years old, my grandfather passed away. Kids were not allowed in hospitals in those days, so I was not able to say my goodbyes to him. I was devistated not only by his passing but because of not getting the opportunity that others in the family had had to say goodybye. That evening, I can vividly remember my well meaning Aunt, coming into my room and telling me to come have some cake. I wasn't interested in cake. I was greiving. However, my Aunt insisted that I come eat cake...that I shouldn't stay hidden away in my room, that I needed to come out with the rest of the family. I remember so well, sitting at that table and choking down that cake. I remember feeling confused too, because I was sooooooo upset, yet the cake tasted good. I ate the cake even though I really didn't want it.

I feel now that I can relate my overeating right back to that event. If I feel down or depressed or stressed, than I eat. After all, eating is suppose to make you feel better, right??

Can you think back to that one event that shaped your eating habits? Please share with us and if you have found a way to reverse the damage that event has done, share that also.

As for myself... I still struggle on a daily basis, but I'm improving and this WOL is helping.
