Just wanted to say Hi to all the new people. I don't post as often as I should.
My hubby and me hail from Winnipeg and we have a small little low carb group that gets together occasionally. Trying to set up a coffee nite right now. It's hard to believe that in this connected world of the Internet and a city this size that there are only five or six of us doing low carb!
Have a good day everybody.

Thanks for the welcome Stephanie and everyone else!
I have been with Barbo's board for over two years and before that I was at the Low Carb Cafe! I haven't posted for awhile as I was testing WW again to see if going back to wheat products would flare up my headaches and joint pain.Well......it did so I'm officially back on low carb.I always feel so much healthier on low carb and plan now to make this my WOE for life.
I have converted a wonderful bran muffin recipe to low carb and Iplan to rest it tomorrow...if it's a sucess I will post the recipe. It will make 24.

HI: I'm Liz and new to the board. My daughter (number one Wendy)got me interested in the low carb. I'm still reading the books I have such as Dr. Atkins and Living Low Carb. I haven't started the two week woe of eating yet as I have concerns regarding it, especially the high fat foods with saturated fats. My cholestral is great but my husband had a bypass operation last yr. and I am very concerned about the high fat foods it mentions. Cholestrol is a big issue when it comes to him. Most of this is confusing as I have the right (HDL) that my system makes but he has (LDL) and it runs in his family. All his uncles and his Father has passed away now. I want to be able to make the same meals for both of us, not two different meals. I would like to keep a very low chlosteral count in my recipes. Sorry to go on and on but would like to hear from anyone with these concerns or if you have any feedback on this.

Oh my, missed you Robin,
Yep I'm one of the newbies. Good to meet you. How long have you being doing this woe?
Keep posting Robin, we newbies need all the help we can get...lol. And truly appreciate it :)
Wendy
Atkins claims even though his diet is high fat, his patients end up with lower cholesterol because of metabolic aspects of ketosis. I've been on induction 9 weeks, eating the usual lots of meat on this woe, and lots of high fat cheeses, heavy cream etc. (or at least way more than I normally would have eaten of saturated fats). I asked my own doc about the risk, so he's sent me for blood tests to see if my previously normal cholesterol counts have gone up. I'll let you know when I get results.

Hi Liz,
Nice to have family on board! :)
You're doing it the right way, by reading first and making sure it's right for YOU.
Some people who have cholestrol problems still follow a low-carb diet, while maintaining a low-fat diet at the same time.
Keep us posted on your progress!

Hey wa'l,
Your reply came to my email...lol...thought it would go to my mom's? Nothing has been sent to her, strange eh?
Oh well, thought I would get my Mother on this board so that she can have answers to her questions?
Sure hope you all can help her out.

Hi Wendy,
You mean the "notification" email? This usually goes to anyone who clicked on the "Email Notification" option when posting a message. It's pretty handy for those who want to know when there's a new post to a topic/thread they follwo, and can be turned off as well in the "Profile" options.
It's really cool to have your mom on board! :)

Welcome aboard. I can understand your concerns about blood lipids and the connection with saturated fats. Liz, that connection is a myth, propagated by the same folks who tell us we need to eat more lowFAT foods and yet we are getting fatter, and more and more diabetes and in young kids too. I could go on and on, but I confess to you my brain is fading at the moment from exhaustion. However, I will leave you with some thoughts.
1. All of my paternal relatives have died due to heart disease and cholesterol problems, except one aunt, and she is diabetic and has angina. Three years ago, my brother, then 46, had a massive heart attack, and underwent emergency quadruple bypass. He had no history of heart problem or angina, but had high blood pressure and a constant yo-yo battle with obesity since his twenties. Anyway, he followed lowFAT religiously, and took Lipitor. By last August, he weighed more than before the heart attack, and his cholesterol had skyrocketed to 9. I'm sure you know the cost of Lipitor, $400 a month at least. He was terrified that what happened to our dad was going to happen to him. So, he figured he had absolutely nothing to lose, and told his cardiologist he was stopping the Lipitor, and starting the ATkins diet. In 4 months, he lost 30 lbs, and his cholesterol dropped to 6. His triglycerides improved also. His cardiologist has documented my brothers case, and is using lowcarb diet and niacin to treat some other patients as well.
2. If you click here (http://www.lowcarber.org/forum/showthread.php?threadid=483) , it will take you to a post from another member who has corrected her cholesterol with lowcarb.
3. Click on The Cholesterol Myths (http://home.swipnet.se/~w-25775/), by Dr Uffe Ravnskov, MD, PhD. It's a real eye opener.
Anyway, nice to say hello to you. Take care, all the best to you with your new WOE, and all the best to your hubby too. Look forward to hearing of your success....:)

This is probably because she didn't click on the "Notify me" button. This can be set to yes by default by changing the option in the profile as well.

Beleive it or not, it's my name. Quite a common name in the middle east :) Unlike "Tamarian Shepherd" which I use for the internet nickname, from startrek "Darmok" episode.

Hi, this is my first post.....(hi Carol, I'm from Manitoba). Well, I have lost 106 pounds since May 2004, with a low carb diet. I have 28 more to go to reach my goal weight. I started by omitting white flour products and all sugar. I then started to only eat my complex carbs in the form of vegetables and the occasional fruit. I'll eat a whole wheat product once every 4 weeks or so....other than that, I stick with chicken, fish and veggies. The weight has come flying off finally. I also go to Curves 5 times a week and walk between 3-5 miles a day. I of course take a calcium supp. and a multivitamin every day. Well, thats my story! Glad to have found the board.
