Hi all  I was thinking of making spinach dip. Do you think it is low in carbs. I was going to use celery instead of bread.
Here is my recipe of spinach dip and you can tell me what you think?
1 package frozen spinach,drained
1 cup sour cream
1 cup miracle whip
3 green onions chopped
1 package vegetable soup mix
1 can water chestnuts chopped fine(I DONT KNOW IF THIS IS HIGH IN CARBS??? can omit)

So what do you think?

I'd check the last two items for their carb content. Chestnuts are quite high. www.fitday.com will give you an exact figure for them. Or you could use the Carb Counter on the right - 2nd from the bottom on the Quick Links.

Let us know how it turns out if you make it.

My favourite dip is made with Avocado and a little yogurt and lemon to stop it discolouring.

Take care and have fun,

Hello notaquiter,

water chestnuts, canned, sliced, 1/2 cup - 4g carb/1g fiber
veggie soup pwdr, Knorr, 2 Tbsp - 6g carb/1g fiber
Miracle Whip, 1 Tbsp, 2g carb/0g fiber

however,

real mayo has less than 1g carb per Tbsp, so is usually a much better choice.

Hope that helps,

Hi all, I checked out fitday.com for the amount of carbs for those ingredients for my spinach dip and they did have one with sour cream base
The package of spinach say 1/3 is 4 grams of carb
but the fitday is 1 cup for 2 grams
Whats going on? Which one is true?
Tlawson had said that soup mix is 2 tbsp is 6 gram but the fitday.com says 1 cup veg soup mix is 4 percent of grams

The recipe could be very high in carbs
Spinach-1 cup 2grams
soup mix-1cup 4 grams
sour cream 1 cup 3 grams
miracle whip 1 tbsp 2grams
NO chestnuts TOO high in carbs

So how would I figure out, if I ate 1 cup of spinach dip what would the grams be????

Hi all  I went back to fitday.com and they have the grams of carb for spinach dip. 1tablespoon of spinach dip is 1 gram of carb. So that is high because if you ever tried my spinach dip you can not help your self for eating the whole thing. Well I guess I'll have to make it at a later date.

notaquiter,

The values that I got were from Corinne T. Netzer's "The Complete Book of Food Counts", and they were specific to the brand. So, depending on what brand of soup mix, etc., the carb values may vary drastically. I used the Knorr brand because that's the one that I used to use, and most people that I know also use that kind. However, a different brand may be different. fitday uses an average of values (unless they have specific brand names, not sure what you chose).

Also, spinach would vary depending on whether it's fresh or frozen. Fresh would be around 1 cup for 2 grams.

Instead of the soup mix, try some herbs and spices, probably come out to fewer carbs. Also, if you're looking at chestnuts instead of water chestnuts, the counts will be very different. European chestnuts are 1 ounce boiled - 7.9g carb/<1g fiber, but canned water chestnuts are a different matter - 1 ounce - 3.5g carb/.7g fiber - a much better deal. I know that some people use water chestnut powder (found in Asian markets) as a replacement for flour in breading or frying certain foods because it is much lower in carbs.

Hi  Tlawson, do you get confuse I sure do. I have notice some site and books are different when it comes to grams of carbs. That really bugs me.
I also use Knorr veg.mix for my dip. On the package it says per serving 10g is 5.4 carbs.
I was really craving spinach dip. Now I'm looking for another dip any suggestion?

the best spinach dip recipe ever is as follows, we got this from a local pub and its simple and low carb

1/2 package shredded frozen spinach drained ( I like a whole package myself)
2 tablespoons chopped chives
2 cups real mayo not fat free
1/2 teaspoon Accent
1/2 teaspoon ground pepper
salt to taste

Mix this up and let it sit at least 30 minutes I like to let mine sit over night, and then serve with low carb veggies, celery, raw mushrooms, cauliflower, jicama is always good and crunchy, and some microwaved pepperoni goes real well with it like a crunchy cracker.

Hey There!

I also make a good tastey spinach dip without at too many carbs.

one block of cream cheese softened
8 ounces of sour cream
one can of well drained leaf spinach
salt pepper and garlic powder to taste

Mix it all up and eat with veggies! Yum Yum!

That sounds really good - TGI Fridays uses melted cheese, artichokes, and spinach served with raw veggies for dipping. I don't know the carb count though.
