Hi my fellow wonderful LCers.
OK I have to vent a second....
WHY is it that people who think LC is bad need to CONSTANTLY remind you at every meal you eat?
My co-workers are in shock that I eat steak, burgers and cream cheese. They tell me how bad it is and "when I go off this diet of mine" etc. It is so frustrating. I pulled up Nat and Donalds pic and said--
DOES THAT LOOK UNHEALTHY???
ARGH
First some of my friends were telling me how "dangerous" it is to be following ATkins. Then every day my co-workers mock my food. Thank GOD (I am so blessed in many ways) that my honey is extremely supportive of me so I dont have to hear it at night too).
What makes me mad is that I go back to old emotions of doubt. I think to myself
What if I really am messing up my kidney?
What if I am going to gain all this weight back the second I eat a "bad' thing?
I think THAT is what frustrates me the most. I doubt what I know has been the best change for me in the past month. I wish I could see it more that I have lost 13 lbs, many inches and I go to the gym 5-6 times a week and can bike 18 miles or walk 7. What is wrong with losing my 100lbs in one month?
Thanks for the vent.
Im sure you all hear the negativity jsut liek I do.
Im just mad because I am trying to change eating habits AND get rid of my emotional link to eating. I think when people label food "good" and "bad" and appear to secretly wish you would eat an entire cake and gain your weight back, its somewhat stressful!!!!!!
Have a great night all and keep up the good work

I've long reconized and it is still angers me how people feel that if a person is overweight, they can butt their nose into our business on the pretense of wanting to help. Victoria, if you were some skinny thang... they wouldn't say a word about what you eat. In fact, they would probably take note and start eating the same. People who put down low carb are not informed. They have not educated themselves on this WOE and therefore can only repeat what they hear from all the nay sayers out there.
Even doctors are uninformed IMHO. They see your blood sugar is up or cholestrol and hand you a print out of a diet that is accepted by the health care profession. They have not done any research into the problem themselves, they simply are following guidelines. If their diet doesn't work, well thenin their minds, it's you who are the failure, not the diet.
We have every right to be frustrated with the nay sayers. I feel like telling them to get their nose out of my cream cheese and educate themselves! Don't doubt yourself, Victoria. Your body will tell you what is right. Seems to me it's already thanking you for changing to this WOL. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for opening up the opportunity for me to vent also, Victoria. :) Hope you don't feel so alone now.

print off copies of the recent Gary Taubes New York Times Article, "What if It's All Been a Big Fat Lie?" (it's on the Media Watch forum or go the the New York Times Site and enter Taubes) - hand it to the naysayers, ask them to read it before they comment anymore, and if they want to discuss it with you after, tell them you'd be happy to.
If you haven't read the article - YOU MUST. It's great confirmation of what we LCers have been arguing for years - if after reading it, your coworkers still want to criticize you - just blame it on the brainwashing of the "Food Pyramid" over the past 30 years! :D
I keep copies of the article with me now all the time, and I just hand them out when someone is critical, say, "talk to me after you've read that", turn around and walk away!

I like Keri's idea of printing out the article - it is a great article!
You could always show those naysayers what it feels like to have your food critiqued: "That stuff is loaded with sugar - it'll rot your teeth", etc.
Stick with it, we all know it works. Dr A's plan has been around for 30 years - its not been proven to harm healthy kidney's. If it truly was harming our kidney's, don't you think someone would have come up with some proof in 30 years?

Just hang in there, some of the same people that were naysayers before have come to me to say" it is working so well for you that I want to try it." They ask "will you mentor me?' I tell them about this web site for support. The proof is in the lc pudding!!!!

What truly amazes me is the way that EVERYONE seems to have an opinion. I regularly get weight-loss tips from people who are bigger than me and gaining weight on their low-fat diets! (Like I'm going to just drop what's obviously working and start listening to them.)
I agree with Joy, though. The best revenge is proving them wrong. (When we all hit our goals and don't drop over from a heart attack.)
Incidentally, I work for a medical association and on one of the committees I work with HALF of the doctors are on LC. (They're a pretty enlightened crowd!)

Tari,
That's really encouraging that so many doctors are trying LC. Maybe they'll spread it around and slowly change the low fat bias. I know there's been alot in the news about LC, so maybe things are shifting.
Victoria,
I know it can be frustrating, but the longer you do LC, the more proof you will have. When you've lost 50 lbs., maybe they will take you seriously. I like Keri's idea of having copies of Taube's article. I'm off to look it up. What a great idea to spread the word. Alot of folks don't have time to read books, but they'll sit still to read an article.
