Do you recall the African gene conversion example I sent you
which involved HVR I sites 16355T & 16362C? If so, I just saw
some lineages with these variants connected in a reduced
median network:

Am. J. Hum. Genet., 69:1348-1356, 2001 Do the Four Clades of
the mtDNA Haplogroup L2 Evolve at Different Rates? Antonio
Torroni,1,2 Chiara Rengo,2,4 Valentina Guida,2 Fulvio
Cruciani,2 Daniele Sellitto,5 Alfredo Coppa,3 Fernando Luna
Calderon,6 Barbara Simionati,7 Giorgio Valle,7 Martin
Richards,8 Vincent Macaulay,9 and Rosaria Scozzari2

See Figure 1 - the L2b clade.

Did you notice that the 3 of 5 shortest branches had mutations
at 16187 or 16189, the other 2 (related) might have had
reversions in the stem we cannot see.

It would be interesting to see what exactly the positional
changes at 187 and 189 were, whadduyathink?

You must be referring to Figure 2.

They were away from the CRS forms - 187C-->T & 189T-->C (if
I'm understanding you properly).

I'm seeing branch length differences in the Native
American coding region sequences also and find them to be
quite puzzling. This phenomenon is definitely not
restricted to Africa.
